Isn't it time that you gave up drinking Coke and Pepsi? In fact, isn't it time you gave up drinking ALL carbonated beverages? WHY? To save the planet, of course!

Listen up. Do you know how much C02 is in a bottle of carbonated cola? 2.2g is found in the average bottle. US consumption ALONE of these products is around 15 billion gallons. Consumption per capita in the US is around 50 gallons per annum. That equates to 132 million pounds of C02 entering the atmosphere EVERY year JUST from the USA. Now multiply that up by the global consumption factor and you get an idea of the menace that fizzy drinks represent to our planet.

I implore you - for the sake of Mother Earth - put down that Coke and belch no more. It's what Rev Al Gore would expect from you!

The earth will be a cold, dead, lifeless rock hurtling through the void before I give up Mountain Dew.

Yes and you are now a fellow polluter of the atmosphere along with me!

You know, shire, it never seems to fail: you set out to make fun of Al Gore and the plain, solid science behind global warming research, and you end up making fun of yourself. I can't tell whether you're doing this on purpose to provide us with a laugh, or if you just don't understand how silly these arguments look. But either way, here's the straight story.

First, I need to correct your numbers. The site that reported the carbon dioxide figures for soft drinks estimated 2.2g/16 fluid ounces. 15 billion gallons per year is in the ballpark for US consumption, which works out to about 582 million pounds of CO2 per year, if we assume that every bit of what's in the soda ends up back in the atmosphere. That's rather more than the 132 million pounds you gave.

Don't smile too broadly, though, because it really doesn't matter all that much. I corrected your numbers just to show that they needed correcting - you aren't getting your facts straight. More importantly, though, you're ignoring the really vital facts (it's not just you - that's par for the course among climate change skeptics). A gallon of gasoline produces just over 20 pounds of CO2 when burned (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/co2.shtml).

I'm sure you can see where this is going. The United States burns 146 BILLION gallons of gasoline in a year (source (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question417.htm)). That works out to roughly 3 TRILLION pounds of CO2 being dumped into the atmosphere. I'll save you the math: that's about 5000 times as much as the US consumption of soda produces. In fact, we produce about 15 times as much CO2 in a single day from our cars than we do in an entire year from our soft drinks.

As usual, climate skeptic propaganda attempts to direct our attention to something utterly trivial in hopes of distracting us from what's really important. If you want to drink your soda completely guilt-free, just tune up your car, or reduce the amount you drive by 0.02%. The amount of gasoline you save will more than make up for that cola habit.

Yeah Red...but more American's (a lot more) drink soda than drive.

LOL.

Sorry I just had to say something.

I think Shire is going over the top purposely on this one.

I found it amuzing.

I thought it was funny too, Rob. In a 5000 to 1 sort of way.

Thing is though, mate, if the CO2 didn't go into the Coke etc, where else would it go? It would be in the atmosphere anyway. We just need to plant more trees to replace the ones we've cut down. No-one is going to give everything that supposedly contributes to global warming, because that would take away a lot of stuff! I think people need to come up with different ways of reducing CO2 like planting trees. Nature sorts itself out every time, given time!

Everyone just send your money to Kurchatovium's Reclamation of Air Pollutants or KRAP. My company will reduce your carbon footprint to zero for hardly any money at all and you will all be able to sleep easier. Every dime you give to KRAP goes to directly to buying plants for my Mother's garden and the extra plants offset all that nasty CO2. Then you can drink all the soda you want. :D Remeber if you give a crap about earth then give to KRAP. :D

Haha. That's right, Shire. The "Right Reverend" Al Gore. Can I hear an "amen" glory to God?! Those without their heads up their ass see very clearly the hypocrisy of Gore's preaching while his house consumes many times the energy of us "common folk." Too fucking funny, man.

I prefer Coca Cola products over Pepsi. My personal favorite soda these days is Diet Coke with Lime.

Things go better with Coke! ;)
