The Good Guys embarked on their first road trip of the year. They started by losing two of three in New York, before going to Atlanta, and losing two of three, and then moving on to Houston, and winning two of three. They returned home, on a Sunday night, to begin a nine game homestand, their second of the year, against the teams from the midwest. Mitch, who usually hated the road, almost felt relieved while he was away, as he had physical and emotional distance between himself, and Naomi, and their problems, and was able to have some decent night's sleep, something he was not doing while he was at home.
While Mitch was away, he had little communication with Naomi. Their only contact discussed their three grown children, and what mail had come. Mitch felt very distracted, and very distanced, from his wife of nearly a quarter century.
When Mitch arrived home on Sunday night, Naomi was there, of course, but the couple said almost nothing to each other. As Naomi paraded around the apartment, in a short black nightgown, Mitch couldnt help but resist a comment. "Can you please go put something on. Seeing you like that is making me think of things I shouldnt be". "You have no right to tell me what to wear, mister! I am decent. If you don't like that I am hot, or what I'm wearing, too fucking bad about you! You cant have your cake and eat it, too. You cant tell me you want to give up, dont want to be married to me anymore, and then come home, and expect to fuck me. It doesnt work that way, American" Naomi said, in a tone of voice that was more factual, then angry. Mitch sighed :"Whatever. I am going to bed. I'm tired, and need my sleep" Mitch said.
The next night, the Good Guys gathered at the ballpark for their second homestand of the year, starting against the Pirates. Word of Mitch and Naomi's situation had made it around to the team, but, their teammates were being respectful of the couple's privacy, choosing not to discuss the situation, unless either Mitch or Naomi brought it up, which, thus far, they hadnt. That night, Kate Hudson was on the mound. Mitch, who was in a long slump, and hitting in the low 200s, struck out three times. Fortunately, Paradise got two homers, and Hudson fired a three hit shutout for eight innings, combining with Hilary Duff, on a 3-0 win. Gil Bellows pitched on Tuesday night. Once again, pitching dominated. Bellows allowed but one run through seven innings, and again the bullpen finished up, for a 2-1 victory. Charlize Theron took the mound on Wednesday. She allowed only one run in eight innings, but Paradise could not score, falling 1-0.
Thursday was an off day. That day, Mitch and Naomi spent time apart at the casino, indicative of where their frames of mind were.
On Friday night, before the game with the Cubs, the media gathered around Good Guy manager Lee Sniderman, to discuss his team's lack of hitting. The Good Guys, uncharacteristically, were last in the league in team batting average. If not for their stellar pitching, instead of having a season where they were contending, they would be far back in the cellar. Mitch was not hitting a lick, and, it remained to be seen if he would, considering his troubles with Naomi. Neve Campbell had the ball that night. Paradise managed to score four runs that night, a virtual offensive explosion for them in recent weeks. Campbell allowed nothing, pitching a two hit shutout, for a 4-0 win. Rachel Leigh Cook took a 6-1 battering on Saturday night. Kate Hudson had the call, and the ball, on a sunny, bright, 83 degree Sunday, in front of a sellout. Kate was striking hitters out that day, fanning a dozen in her six innings of work. She left, tied, 1-1, after seven innings. Paradise pushed across a run in the eighth, and then, the bullpen did its job, in a 2-1 victory.
St Louis came to town on Monday night, in the homestand's last series, before the Good Guys would go away again. Gil Bellows got hit hard that night, getting lit up for five runs, and Paradise could not muster nearly enough offense, falling by a 5-2 score. Charlize Theron pitched on Tuesday night. Paradise, who had struggled with hitting all year, had an uncharacteristic day that day, scoring three runs in the first inning, and four overall. With the game tied, 3-3 in the sixth, left fielder Dawson came up, and blasted a solo homer, to give Paradise a lead they would not give back, in a 4-3 Good Guys win, that completed a six and three homestand. Simply put, the Good Guys did not look like the Good Guys. This was a team that over the years, had entertained fans with high scoring games, home runs, and such, and then learned how to pitch decently. Now, they were leading the league in pitching, near the bottom of the league in hitting, and having to win games in a far different fashion than they had over the years.
When the media closed in on Sniderman to discuss his team, the manager became irate. "I dont believe you people! Did you see the outcomes? We won six games of nine on that homestand! When we do that, I am happy. Do I care if we win one-nothing, or seven-six? Hell, no! A Win is a Win! Do I wish we were scoring more runs? Of course! Do me a favor, come and talk to me when the team isnt performing on the field. This job is hard enough without you people scruntizing it. Now, if you all dont mind, I have a postgame meal to eat, and some things to attend to, before the road trip tomorrow. Conversation over. We won the game. Next case!" On Thursday night, Mitch was packed to head off on the road trip to Pittsburgh. Naomi and him were still saying little to each other. He said a quick and unemotional goodbye, and headed out the door, to meet his cab to the airport.
