The Good Guys had a quiet and fesitive winter following their latest championship. There were the usual banquets, obiligatory visits, and pomp and circumstance, that came with being a World Champion. In spite of all glamour, and good fortune, that was shining down on the team, there was a potentially hazardous situation, that was threatening to boil over.
Naomi, tired of being placed in the position where she could not persue her acting career, decided to spend her winter vacation making two movies back to back, one in Australia, and the other in California. Such decisions meant that Mitch and her were virtual strangers all winter, as he elected to stay home, to rest, and attend the Good Guys off season obligations, feeling that Naomi would be inaccessable fifteen hours a day anyway, during her movie shoots. Luckily, the movie shoots were over in Feburary, which gave Naomi time to prepare for spring training.
In the meantime, the team sent the couple's contracts to them, right after the first of the year. At that point, Mitch felt so deserted, and angry, that he almost didn't feel like signing the contract, and calling it quits with baseball right then and there, as he would have gone out on top, a world champion. He sent Naomi her contract via Federal Express mail, to her hotel in Los Angeles, and, predictably, the couple got into a heated argument, about their future. Naomi, energized from working on two movies over her hiatus, wanted to return to the Good Guys for another year, while Mitch, feeling deserted by Naomi, angry, and tired of arguing with her about every little detail of their lives, wanted to retire from baseball, right then and there. The argument ended with Mitch agreeing to return to the team. He had little choice. With Naomi and his grown children on the island, what was he to do? Retire, and move away? Accept a broadcasting or front office job? He could still play ball, and he knew it. So, he figured, he might as well play another year, and see what his situation was after that.
After a spring that was one of Mitch's worst, the team opened the season on a windy, cloudy, 80 degree day, in Paradise, against the Mets. After the championship ring and flag ceremonies, Kate Hudson took the hill, opposing the Mets ace Pedro Martinez. Neither pitcher was themselves. Kate got hit hard, allowing four runs in her six innings of work. Pedro, too, had his challenges, allowing three runs in six innings. The Good Guys trailed by a run, before tying the game in the seventh. The Mets went ahead, before the Good Guys tied the game again. Finally, in the tenth, with the score tied,
5-5, center fielder Burns hit a homer, to send the sellout crowd home happy, with a 6-5 win. The next day, on opening day two, Gil Bellows faced the Mets Tom Glavine. Glavine, as was customary against the Good Guys, got hammered, allowing five runs in five innings. Bellows wasnt great, but he was good enough, allowing three runs in six innings, and combining with the bullpen, who shut the Mets down late, for a 5-3 Good Guy victory. Charlize Theron pitched on Wednesday afternoon. She gave up only one run in seven innings. The Good Guys, however, could score none, and lost, 1-0.
Thursday was an off day. Mitch and Naomi showed up to counesling, and didnt have much to discuss. "We've been apart much of the last four months. What is there really to say? We live together, talk, and have sex, sometimes. She wanted to return to the team, so, here we are. We'll see how the season plays out" Mitch said, almost exasperated.
Atlanta came to town on Friday, for the first night game of the season. Neve Campbell took the mound. She pitched six innings, allowing three runs, a quality start. Unfortunately, Paradise would score only one run that night, and lose, 3-1. Rachel Leigh Cook got hammered in her first start on Saturday night, losing 7-2. Kate Hudson opposed John Smoltz, on a sunny, bright, 83 degree Paradise Sunday afternoon, in front of a sellout. Both pitchers were magnificent that day, each tossing eight scoreless innings. Kate struck out ten Braves, while Smoltz fanned nine Good Guys. The game moved into the bottom of the ninth, scoreless, when left fielder Dawson ripped a homer, to give the Good Guys a dramatic 1-0 win, salvaging them from being swept, by the skin of their teeth.
Houston visited Paradise on Monday, in the final series of the homestand, before the team would hit the road for the first time that year. Gil Bellows had the ball on Monday night. He pitched well, allowing only one run in seven innings, as the Good Guys got just enough runs, in a 3-1 victory. Charlize was the starter on Tuesday night. She allowed three runs in six innings. The game was tied, 3-3 in the eighth, when Naomi gave up a homer, to a chorus of boos, that was the deciding blow, in a 4-3 defeat. Neve Campbell took the mound, on a partly sunny, dry, 84 degree day, in front of a sellout. Neve pitched a decent game, allowing but two runs, before being removed in the sixth. The game was tied, 2-2, before Mitch came up with a man on in the eighth, and blasted a long two run homer. Hayden sealed the deal in the ninth, and the Good Guys had a 4-2 win, that capped off a five and four homestand. There had been some rocky parts of the homestand. As the team packed to head to New York, it was hoped, that they would get on the right track.
