The Good Guys embarked on their next road trip, to the West Coast. It did not go well, as they went three and six. The team lost two of three games at each stop of a San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles road trip. They returned home, on a Sunday night at midnight, to begin a nine game homestand.
While Mitch was away on the trip, the truce, and cease fire, that he had arrived at with Naomi during the previous homestand, came to an abrupt halt. The couple had one particularly bad knock down, drag out, battle on the computer, which prompted Naomi to tell Mitch to quote "Take up residence in the hotel for the week he was coming home". Clearly, the peace that had existed between them was only temporary, and it was not known how long the current problem would last.
To make matters worse, on top of Mitch and Naomi's struggles, the Good Guys were beginning to experience difficulties in another area they hadn't through the years, except for the one year where they finished last, and that was at the ticket window. A suddenly very poor United States economy, and world wide recession, had taken a serious toll on the island's tourism, and local economy. Whereas the team had usually drawn crowds of 20,000 to 30,000 on weeknights, 40,000 on Saturday nights, and sellouts of 50,000 or more on Sundays, the current forecast for the forseeable future was for crowds of 10,000 on weeknights, less than 20,000 on Saturdays, and no more than 20,000 on Sundays. The team had money to cover payroll, as the players earned lower salaries than players on other teams, but, all was not a happy time in Paradise Island.
With Mitch in a room at the hotel, the Good Guys opened their nine game homestand on Monday night, against the Nationals, in front of a miniscule crowd of but 9,000. Gil Bellows started, and pitched well, allowing two runs in seven innings, as the Good Guys scored three runs in the seventh, for a 3-2 win. Charlize Theron pitched on Tuesday night, before a gathering of under 11,000.
She allowed one run in her six innings of work, as Paradise broke a 1-1 tie, with three runs in the eighth, for a 4-1 victory. Neve Campbell gave up seven runs on Wednesday night, and lost, 7-2, in front of a crowd of 12,000.
Thursday was an off day. That day, Mitch and Naomi, still seperated, and not speaking, cancelled their counesling appointment. Naomi went for a massage, as Mitch spent time in the casino, losing $500.
The Phillies came to town on Friday night. Rachel Leigh Cook was on the hill, with 13,000 witnesses in the stands. Cook took a licking, getting slammed for eight runs in five innings, in an 8-3 defeat. Hayden took the ball on Saturday night, before about 16,000 people. Hayden gave a good effort, allowing three runs in six innings, but, with the score tied in the ninth, Kate Hudson gave up a homer to Ryan Howard, in what would be a 4-3 setback. Gil Bellows had the start on Sunday, a sunny, windy, 85 degree day, in front of an announced crowd of 22,000. Gil shut out the Phils for eight innings, as Ed Burns came up in the ninth, in a scoreless tie, and delivered a solo blast, to send the customers home happy, with a 1-0 victory over the Phillies.
The Reds entered Paradise on Monday, for the homestand's final series. Charlize Theron had the ball, and fired a four hit shutout, thrilling the crowd of 10,000 plus, in a 3-0 win. Neve Campbell allowed only one run in six innings on Tuesday, but Naomi gave up an eighth inning two run homer, in a 3-1 loss. Rachel Leigh Cook pitched on Wednesday afternoon, a sunny, humid, nearly 90 degree day, before the best crowd of the homestand, all of 23,000 folks. Cook gave a credible effort, allowing three runs in six innings. The Good Guys broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth, with solo homers by Burns and left fielder Dawson. Kate Hudson got the save in the ninth, and the Good Guys had a 5-3 win, that completed a five and four homestand. Things on many fronts were looking bleak, and, as the team prepared to travel to DC the next night, troubles abounded.
At the Saturday tickle party that week, Mitch needed a release. He paid a dom $100 to take him to a private room, and tickle him. The dom tied Mitch hands and feet to the bed, in his boxers. The dom began by tickling Mitch's neck with fingers, as his head shifted, and the laughter began:HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAA! Working down, the dom tickled Mitch on his underarms, sides, ribs, and belly with fingers, counting his ribs:HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAA! OMG NO!!! Moving down, the dom then tickled Mitch on his hips, inner thighs, and knees, causing his legs to jerk:HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA! NOOOOO! Finally, the dom positioned herself at Mitch's feet, and tickled them with her fingers, feathers, and an electric toothbrush. Mitch went beserk, shaking his feet and wiggling his toes, and begging for mercy:HAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA! OMG PLEASE NO MORE! I GIVE UP! NOOOOOOOOO! HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAA! Finally, the tickle ended, and Mitch was untied.
That week, with his troubles with Naomi, Mitch also kept his distance from Cathy, making a couple of visits to see the baby, but avoiding her sexually.
On Thursday, Mitch went back to the apartment, to drop off his dirty clothes, and pack for the team flight to DC. Naomi was not home. The couple had not spoken to each other in ten days, and the troubles were very deep.
So, it had been a homestand of subpar crowds, subpar play, and serious trouble personally. Now came a ten day trip. Would things improve? That answer to come in the continuing story of the Tickle Team From Paradise Island.
