Due to a nasty virus I was forced to visit the TMF last week via exclusively on my cellphone. There are enough smartphones with G3 running around that I believe the members would benifit from having a mobile version. if not the clips then at least the discussions and private message part.

That's available, though. Just get interwebs for your phone and put the TMF into the nav bar.... right?

what's involved in that? What stops us from being seen on cellphones now? Is it that other websites can be seen, but for some reason we can't? Or is it that we have to have like a special version of the TMF, adapted specifically for that technology?

I tried going to m.ticklingforum.com and it gave me a 503 error.. I am not talking about just going to the site anyone with a browser can get there.

Not that I am aware of. Basically it is the page formatted for mobile browsers.

it is also called WAP

And then

http://m.crackberry.com

It will show you the difference. I think it is basically setting up a page in basic HTML formatting without CSS or frames or anything. It is like an old text based web page but i know that the forums can be listed and such replied to. it is all just text based.

it just makes it easier to navigate on a cell phone without having to look at the page very very small and then zoom in to hit a link and load pics and scripts and such which slow the surfing down a bit.

I found this as one possible solution: http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2005/07/make-your-site-mobile-friendly

but I'm not sure the forum can be run through a filter like this. The problem, I would guess from a position of considerable ignorance, is going to be that the forum pages don't really exist until they are called out of the database to be shown to someone.

It's definately something to think about, though, I read that there are 3 times as many mobile phones as pc's.

Im always visiting the TMF on my phone, I guess it may depend on what your phone is capable of but ive only got a nokia n95 and it accesses this site perfectly, but its not a mobileweb version its just the same as on a PC so takes a while to load pages so I have images turned off.

If theres a way to have a simpler Mobile friendly version than that would be pretty cool says I,

Making the forum work for a mobile device will require a new style specifically for said devices, one designed to cut out the extra junk and display the absolute minimum of content in a format a small screen can manage. Most smartphones can view regular web pages (the iPhone is one I am personally aware can) without too much difficulty, although the amount of scrolling required to read anything will quickly make one want to tear one's hair out.

Could it be done? Of course, and there are many examples of sites that do it. Google is one. However, it would take a tremendous amount of effort (and a developer with a smartphone to test the thing as it was made) to implement. Despite what that link the Jeffman posted may indicate, it isn't a simple thing to do if it is to be done well.

I can understand that. If the powers that be decide that this is a worthwhile effort and that you would like to tackle this task. I offer my services to beta test the mobile site. Also if you just type in the mobile link into a web browser alot of time it will bring up the mobile version to see what the formatting looks like.

I also was checking out the vBulletin forums and found a couple of interesting posts.
