I'm a big FF fan, I've played them all, 6 being my favorite.
Playing 13 at the moment, and I quite like it, its very linear but the amount of hate the game is getting seems a bit harsh. Love the battle system its fast and keeps you on your toes. Although if you screw up it can be pretty unforgiving. Have to say though I can't stand Hope, and Snow going on about protecting everyone and everything is a little irritating,I like Sazh's character though, probably my favorite. Still a big improvement over 12 though.

Why 6?

Well it was the last one before square started becoming obsessed with FMV's in there games, Its got arguably some of the best characters in the series, and Kefka is the best villain in Final Fantasy.
Alot of people like to think FF7 is the best in the series but i think its the nostalgia hazing there opinions, since it was the first FF most people played, was the first one i played anyway. But it's not aged well at all, which is the case for alot of early 3D games. The story wasn't the greatest in comparison to other FF games. And while people like to go on about Sephiroth being the greatest video game villain ever, hes not. The whole walking away through the flames thing was cool, but he was a bit emo trying to bring his mummy back to life. Although the materia system along with the limit breaks and summons gave it one of the best battle systems.
LvsTicklingFeet

People think I'm crazy, but I really enjoyed 9. I liked that battle system. I didn't like 8. I didn't like having to draw magic and such
Cave In
03-21-2010, 11:24 PM
9 was actually a really good game, Some of the characters got annoying though like Vivi. My biggest gripe with 9 was the limit breaks, it happened whenever the gauge filled up which the majority of the time was near the end of a pointless battle with weak monsters, wasting it since it took forever to fill up.
8 was alright but only after I figured out how to properly use the junction system, and that you didn't need to level
LvsTicklingFeet

I am just glad 13 came out and they went back to a better battle system. 12's made me so angry. If I wanted to worry about aggro, I would go play WoW

Played all the FF games between 6 and X-2. I used to love them when I was younger but I've sort of outgrown them nowadays. I think the turning point came when I got so utterly addicted to the Blitzball minigame in FFX that I actually stopped playing Pro Evo Soccer to play it. Then again my Pro Evo team was shit, whereas my Besaid Aurochs were unbeaten for six seasons or something mental like that xD
EDIT: I'm still debating wether or not to give XIII a go; I'm hearing mixed reviews at the moment, lots of people saying it takes an age to really get into it (which is something I hate about Final Fantasy games) but that it's great fun once you do.

If you can't initially get into the story of XIII, it is going to be a long time until you actually start giving a damn, if you end up doing so at all. That being said, I'm enjoying the game a lot, and am currently just dicking around in Chapter 11, enjoying my newly found freedom from the linearity of the prior chapters. Definately a solid game, regardless of what the naysayers will tell ya.
Also, I've played and finished every Final Fantasy except 2, 3, and 11, and I agree that 6 is still probably one of my favorites.

Final Fantasy XIII presents everything I've come to love about getting a new FF game. A fresh new story, interesting characters, beautiful graphics, and killer battle system.
I don't know how many of you are aware of this, but there are two development teams working the FF franchise. One group primarily responsible for FF tactics, and one for games like FFVII and FFX, as well as X-2 obviously. That's the reason for the severe disparity between X and XII and then again with XIII. 13 and 10 were done by one group while XII was a totally different company so to speak.
Personally I'm enjoying 10 and 13 much better than 12, which was amazing, but the story kinda sucked, and the game play just didn't make up for that in my opinion. That's not why I love final fantasy games, I love good characters and a good story.

FFXII's story takes far too much crap than it deserves. I give the game kudos for trying to make the plot more event-driven as opposed to the past iterations focussing on characters. Admittedly they dropped the ball on this, but for a first attempt, it could have been much worse. If XII had tried to balance plot and character driven story, it would have been much better than it was. I really didn't give a damn about Vayne, I mean hell, I cared more about Dr. Cid and Reddas than I did any protagonist of the game.

Although I've never beaten an FF game I've been playing them ever since I got the first one for the Gameboy when I was 12. I've kinda collected them ever since. Just the numbered ones, I don't care at all about the spin offs or that X2 game that came out like 6 years ago. The new one is fun, but I'm still within the first half, so other than the visuals, it's got no feelings of grandeur, and doesn't give any time at all to sit back and look at the world itself. It's just nothing but the situation...kill enemy move forward, kill enemy move forward. The skill tree for every character is about as linear as the game too. I hope it gets better than this.
My favorite one was 6. And you know, I've been on a few forums about this, and although everyone seems to say 7 is most popular, people have been saying 6 more on these forums as their all-time favorite. The one that was released as #3 for the super Nintendo in the US, with the espers and the gadget loving king that lives in the buried castle, his brother that knows the martial arts and whose rival in the mountains was so damn hard to beat till you got those bloody button combos right. The story was involving, introduced plenty of really cool characters, and had more of an epic feel than any other in the entire series I think.

I agree with you,XII's story is a love/hate thing I liked it. but its the only game where I really didn't care for any of the characters. My problem with the game was they took the fun out of boss battles by making it so that you could take down a boss purely by spamming Quickenings which I wasn't a fan of, and the summons just seemed pointless, since they weren't practical to use. It wasn't a bad game, just it had the potential to be better than it was.

03-22-2010, 10:38 PM
I agree, the summons served no use in XII other than an extra bossfight. I really don't think I ever summoned them with an exception for that story point where I had to summon Belias to progress. Come to think of it, XII is the only game I never collected all the summons in... Zodiark was a rat bastard, and I flat out refused to navigate the Great Crystal again just to find Ultima.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed XII. It was a beautiful game and I definitely appreciated the free-roaming aspects of the game. I did like the characters (Balthier especially), and I did play it through to the end.
Its just that the story seemed to heavily rely upon Ashe, while she was a completely lack-luster character.
My biggest beef was that after playing all those grueling hours collecting items and summon monsters, you get to the end of the game and realize that the supposed reason for everything doesn't even make sense. Its like they just invented a problem for you to solve, and not even a very good one. That's why I like a good story, it gives you a reason to find out what's next.

I love the FF series as a whole. FF8 was my favourite. I'm currently playing FF13 at the moment, and am still waiting for the world to open up a bit. I prefer games with an entire world to explore when it comes to FF. Until you got out of Midgar in 7 Everything was linear too.
An ultimate FF would have an expansive world.. FF13's style of story, and FF7's materia and limit break system. With maybe 12's ability to evade battles if you chose to. Maybe that one will be next eh?

FFXIII took a while for me to begin liking it, and I'm on Chapter 11 too. I really had no clue what was going on at first, either. A couple of hours in the game I just opened up that data log and tried to make sense of the story, which actually helped, but I feel it's rather obnoxious that I had to do that. Aside from XIII, I'd have to say 6 and 9 are my favorites (except the last bit of 9's story sucked). I hope FF15 goes back more to it's roots and has the standard chess-style combat.

Oh of course I would love to finish one. That's why I started playing 10 again a few months back, and I managed to at least get loads further than i did before. But then I started taking classes again and those are more important. I almost finished 8...but then my memory card got corrupted and I lost everything, lol. I still have the game so I'm sure I'll try again one day, as well as with 9.

I beta-tested FF11 and it really pissed me off. WoW was a little better, but I still like being able to play whenever I want without having to hunt down a party or deal with idiots. As Gabe from Penny Arcade once said: "the worst part about online games is you have to play them with other people."
LvsTicklingFeet

I played WoW for years. I just hated the fact that you could spend hours on it and sometimes get very little done. With FF, hours played equal things done
Echoplex

That too. The idea of an MMORPG is that there really is no ending, whereas with FF you have the main storyline but can always go back and hit all the side quests and challenge bosses.

I've been gaming for well over 20 years. In all that time, my #1 favorite video game of all time is Final Fantasy VI: AKA Final Fantasy Kefka. No one video game I've ever played has been as enjoyable as that one, and I've played through many many times.
Echoplex
03-29-2010, 02:09 PM
Doesn't it take place in the same world as 13?
"Final Fantasy Versus XIII is, according to its developers, a wholly independent story unfolding with different characters and a different visual design. Although it is set within the same Final Fantasy XIII universe, it is unrelated to any other entry within the compilation and is thus neither a sequel nor a prequel to any other entries in Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy XIII."
So I'm not sure if it takes place in the same world or different world or what, just the same universe. If it is the same world, it has to be either centuries in the past or future as FFXIII, since Pulse is uninhabited by humans for a few centuries, and it definitely couldn't be Cocoon.

I've played all of the final fantasy's with the exception of XI (and yes...that includes X-2 *shiver*) and I must say VI and IX are still my favorites. Playing XIII now and enjoying it...finding it odd that there really isn't a town system or whatever in it...then again I'm only on disk 2

50? They promised a good 80-100 hours
ZenTickling
04-01-2010, 08:19 PM
Took me about 58 hours to beat, not doing all of the quests. The developers stated that they didn't include an exploration/town system because the characters are fugitives and it wouldn't fit. Doesn't make sense being that the only thing that identifies them as l'Cie are the brands, which can be easily covered. Still, pretty decent game with great graphics and CG.

I'm around 70+ hours into the game right now and only need about 5 or 6 more trophies (and of course there all the hardest one's lol) and I thought the game was really good. I gotta say that FFXII is still my favorite though. It would've been nice to see what this game would've been like if it had stayed exclusive to the PS3, I know I read that they had to leave out a lot of stuff so that the game could be on the 360 without being 4 or 5 discs.

Big FF Fan here! The first one I played was FF9 when I was 13. My boss introduced it to me and lent me the game. I couldn't get enough from there. I played 10 next, then x2, then a little bit of 7 and 8, THEN acquired some of the older games for my gameboy. I don't have access to the new one though simply because I don't have a PS3. :(

FFIX was my first also :) It made me go out and get a PS1. And subsequently, a PS2...lol. I started playing backwards from there, so I finished VIII, started VII, finished VI and started V. I also played tactics somewhere in there. And I've played X (finished), X-2 (didn't finish), and XII (almost finished). I still play XI regularly. I bought a PS3 just so I can continue the series and I'll hopefully get around to setting it up this weekend so I can start on FFXIII. Looking forward to seeing how FFXIV works out, too :D

Never been a fan of the online gaming angle, but its nice to know so many people on here dig the Final Fantasy scene. Rock on ladies and gents, rock on... I'm currently trying to Platinum 13 on the PS3, but I have 5 marks to kill, and 7 to 5 star before that. I fear it may take a while, especially with GOW3 nagging at me as an easy platinum and the potential of trading in SSIV for Super Street Fighter IV... I'm a sucker I know...

1) Because FF is amazing and nobuo uematsu is a musical genius
2) Because FF14 has an official release date of 09/22/2010
You can check out the website at http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/
I played all of the FFs save for the japanese 3 and 4.
And I know I'm late so I wanna catch up by saying 6 is my all time favorite. Kefka is THE most psychotic villain ever. I mean he murdered thousands with glee, practically destroyed the entire world, and then played god in a tower!
8 being my least favorite. The job system to get money, the battle system. Just all around not my cup of tea.

The only FF games I really and truly loved were VI and VIII. I was disappointed in seven. It's one of those games that could've been awesome but for a few critical mistakes. First, they needed to pay their translators more. The translation was garbled enough that it was hard to make sense of the dialogue and plot. The other was the graphics: They touted them to be amazing, showed all these awesome scenes in ads... but the scenes they showed were just cutscenes. The actual game looked more like legos. Bah.
Nine had excellent gameplay under the hood, but the characters were ridiculous and uninteresting.
Ten.... no.
12.. I should've put more time in that one. It didn't hook me, but perhaps I didn't give it enough chance. That, to me, was the game wehre they gave up and made it like World of Warcraft.
I liked VIII. The characters were interesting enough, the graphics attempted to be realistic, and I was neutral-or-better to the junction system. I did rather like the summoning sequences. "Train train, take me away!" The one thing I could've done without was the entire Laguna subplot. I wish they'd re-written it to be unnecessary.
I wish I could've kept Edea in my party. She was so much more badass than anyone else :D.

Legos!! Thank you! I'm glad someone else thinks that!
VI to me was the single best one. The characters were interesting, and the world in conjunction with the story had that proper epic feel to it.
