Birds of a feather

By Herr Kitzeln

Natalia, known all over the North Americas as the Black Swan, awoke from her sleep in her cabin on board her zeppelin, The Huntress. She always did around dawn, for she always made it a habit to climb into her Fury and fly for about an hour or two. It was basically her way to start a new day. Today was different however; she received a message from President La Guardia two nights ago that an unknown pirate group has been raiding The Empire State off and on for two weeks. Their latest target was a passenger zeppelin carrying many VIPs and held for ransom. The message also said that these pirates attacked without warning, achieving their objective efficiently, and leaving the scene fast and without a trace.

The Empire State was begging for her help.

“Hmmm,” the Black Swan thought to herself, “This should be very interesting.”

After docking in New York City, Natalia flagged a gyrotaxi and went to President La Guardia’s office at the top of the Empire State building. When she entered, she saw several important figures of The Empire State already there with President La Guardia. Also there were three other people, two men and one woman. The men straightened their suits when she entered while the woman looked at Natalia with a combination of jealousy and curiosity.

“Ah. There you are Natalia. I’m glad you could make it,” said the Empire State President as he stood up and extended a hand.

Natalia took his hand and the President kissed her hand.

“It’s a pleasure Mr. President,” Natalia replied.

“You know the members of my staff I’m sure,” President La Guardia said.

“Yes. Good morning gentlemen,” the Black Swan said.

The members of Las Guardia’s staff exchanged greetings and hellos. The three people Natalia didn’t know remained silent.

“Now let me introduce you to these three people here,” the President said, “This is Mr. Wilholm, aid to the President of the ISA. Mr. Issan, Minister of Defense and his secretary Ms. Brant.”

Natalia and they exchanged greetings. When the formalities were finished, President La Guardia cleared his throat and began talking.

“Two weeks ago, an unknown squadron of planes began showing up, they came from the sea. First, they destroyed a warehouse and a freighter. No one was hurt, but the damage done was estimated around $125,000. Three days later, they attacked again. This time they attacked an element of the Broadway Bombers while on routine patrol. One of the unknown fighters broke off and attacked them. The element was completely shot down.”

Natalia interrupted, “Tell me. Was this element one of the Madison Venturers?”

“Yes,” one of President La Guardia’s aides answered, “Major Crawford was monitoring the radio transmissions. When he heard one of his pilots were shot down, he immediately launched to intercept. But when he got to his element’s last known location, he only saw his pilots waving to him for pickup.”

Natalia then turned to the ISA representatives, “So far I see this an affair of the Empire State. What is your involvement in all this?”

Mr. Wilholm answered, “After the ‘Madison Shakeup’, as dubbed by all the newspapers, this unknown group entered ISA airspace two days later and attacked one of our cargo zeppelins heading for Hollywood. They quickly shot down one of our best squadrons flying escort. Our zeppelin was captured and all the cargo stolen. They disappeared three days later.”

Another aide to President La Guardia chimed in, “Two days ago, they reappeared and hijacked another zeppelin. It was the passenger zeppelin, The Imperia. Its fighter escort was shot down before any other fighter squadron could respond and the crew and passengers were captured.”

“Was there a demand for ransom?” Natalia asked.

“Yes, on both zeppelins. The ransoms were paid, but here’s the twist. Some of the people who returned were exhausted, and covered with sweat.” Natalia raised an eyebrow.

Just then, the Vice-President came rushing in. “Excuse me for this interruption, Mr. President. But you should turn on the radio.”

The president did so, and heard a little bit of a news flash just coming in.

“…six Avengers on patrol off the coast of Florida have mysteriously disappeared. Dixie spokesman says this disappearance will be investigated.”

President La Guardia turned off the radio. Natalia looked distant for a while and asked, “What do we know of these pirates?”

“Not much,” the President said, “All we have is a crude sketch of the plane that attacked the Madison element and its symbol. Both were described by the pilots of that fatal element.”

An aide produced two pieces of paper and placed them on the desk for Natalia to see. The first contained a sketch of the plane. It looked like a Hughes Bloodhawk except the vertical stabilizer was on the top instead of underneath. Its wings, forward and vertical stabilizers had a slight curve towards the tips, making them appear like scimitars, and more menacing. The second paper had a circle with a perfect triangle inside. Inside the triangle what appeared to be a human skull minus the lower jaw. The skull was elongated with two horns coming from the brow and two of the teeth were fangs. The triangle, although perfect, was rotated slightly to the right.

“Hmmm,” Natalia said out loud.

“You recognize either of these?” an aide asked.

“No,” Natalia replied, “The plane looks vaguely like a Bloodhawk, but the symbol is a mystery to me.”

Natalia’s eyes narrowed for a moment. While the President’s staff was arguing, President La Guardia noticed a faint smile form on Natalia’s face.

“I must go,” Natalia said as she turned and left the office.

Chapter 2

The Huntress was heading south along the coastline. Natalia was staring intently forward, occasionally glancing off to the side seeing the Dixie fighter escort flying along side of her ship. Fenn, her second-in-command, was pacing nervously around the command cabin.

“Fenn,” Natalia said, “If you keep worrying like that you’re going to have even grayer hair.”

Fenn looked at his commander and gave a faint smile.

“I know I shouldn’t worry,” he said, “But there’s something about this I don’t like.”

“I know what you mean,” Natalia replied and then turned towards her helmsman, “How soon will we be at the last known location of that Avenger patrol?”

“We will be at the coordinates within five minutes,” she said.

“Good,” Natalia said, “Hold position here and prepare to launch Valkyrie’s squadron. Have my plane ready.”

“Yes Natalia,” her officer replied.

The Black Swan quickly got into her flight gear and went to her plane as the last plane of Valkyrie’s squadron launched. She climbed into her cockpit and started the engine. It sputtered a little before that noise died out and began purring like a kitten. Her Fury was ready to be launched, one member of the hanger crew gave the thumbs-up and her plane dropped and was now in open sky. Quickly pulling up, she leveled off and caught up with Valkyrie.

“Where do you think these pirates could’ve flown to?” Valkyrie asked.

“I’m not sure,” Black Swan responded, “I think we should fly to the east. There are a few islands there that are worth investigating.”

She then flipped a switch and spoke into the mike. “Attention squadron. This is Black Swan. Valkyrie is still in charge of the squadron, but be alert. I have a very bad feeling about this mission. Be extra careful.”

All the pilots acknowledged. About ten minutes after changing their heading and flying east, Black Swan’s feelings were to come to fruition. Several black planes came diving out of a cloudbank, heading straight for the unsuspecting squadron.

“Black Swan!” one of the pilots shouted, “Enemy planes diving out right behind us! AARRRGGGGHHHHHH!” Static soon replaced the pilot’s voice.

“Second squadron! Break and engage!” Valkyrie ordered.

The ensuing dogfight was fast and furious. While the Black Swan did her best to support her fellow pilots, she knew right off they were outmatched. She knew her pilots were good. Real good. However, the enemy pilots were using very advanced planes. She saw them perform such aerobatics that her own Fury couldn’t begin to touch. These planes immediately took out all of Swan’s Second Squadron in a matter of just a few minutes. Now, she was the only one left capable of flying. She saw the pirates fly down and pick up her fallen comrades. As soon as the last one was picked up, the enemy planes withdrew a short distance and then a plane matching the picture she saw flying toward her very fast.

A deep, crisp, and cultured male voice sounded on her radio, “Surrender Black Swan. You have no chance, none at all. If you do surrender, you and your squadron will be treated with kindness and charity.” The plane flew right past her with incredible speed.

“Never!” she cried and began speaking in her native Russian with a tone that suggested she was cussing.

“So be it then,” the unknown male voice said, “Shadow. Shoot her down!”

“Affirmative,” said a silky female voice Black Swan referred as Shadow.

One of the planes broke from the circle and immediately headed for her. The plane heading had a large propeller radius and the wings looked like seagull wings, only inverted. Black Swan recognized it as a Corsair, an experimental plane built by the Nation of Columbia. She grabbed her stick and pulled back into a climb, executing a perfect Immelman maneuver and smoothly went into a steep dive. Shadow’s Corsair got right on Swan’s six and followed her into the dive. Black Swan gripped her stick nervously as her altimeter quickly counted down, 2,000 feet, 1,500, 1,000…

“Not yet,” she thought nervously, “Almost.”

500, 400, 300…

Her mind was shouting, “Now! Pull up now!”

200, 100…

Black Swan pulled back as hard as she could on her stick. Clearing the ocean surface by only a few feet. The Corsair quickly turned and leveled, still following behind.

“Impressive,” Shadow said, “I didn’t think you would be able to pull out in time. My turn now.”

Shadow then pulled her trigger, causing her plane to spit out rounds of death. Swan’s Fury lost a wing and quickly went into a flat spin, finally skimming along the ocean surface. The Corsair flew away and a gyro came to Swan’s floating wreckage, its crew immediately picking her up and then restraining her.

Black Swan’s worst fears were just coming to light.

Chapter 3

The Black Swan was being led down a long corridor lined with steel doors on both sides. The small openings near the top had bars, but a person could still see inside the cell. She had three guards following her in a triangle formation with the “base” close behind her. Even though handcuffs secured her hands, the guards kept a closeful watch. As she walked down the corridor, she could hear sounds coming from the cells. As she slowed down to listen, she began to grimace.

“HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! NOOOO-HO-HO-HO-HO PLE-HEE-HEE-SE! I CA-HA-HA-HA-N’T TA-HA-HA-KE ANYMO-HO-HO-HO-HO-RE! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!” cried an unknown female voice.

“NOT THAT! NOT THERE! PLEASE HAVE MERCY! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!” cried an unknown male voice.

But the Black Swan went out to the victim in the last cell, for it was Valkyrie’s voice she heard.

“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA PLE-HEE-HEE-HEE-SE! NOT MY FEET! NOT MY TOES! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”

The Swan didn’t realize she stopped until one of the guards shoved his rifle in her back. “Move it!”

She went up several flights of stairs until she came to a pair of large oak doors. The guard on her left stepped up and knocked three times. A moment later, the doors opened to reveal a large dining hall. In the center was a large dining table lined on both sides with silver goblets, beautiful silverware, and fine gold-rimmed china. Flowers in pots could be found all around the room, beautiful artwork hanging on each wall, and a beautiful golden chandelier hanging above the table. Six guards were standing all around the room. They didn’t even look in her direction, until a pair of identical doors on the opposite side opened and a man entered wearing what appeared a dress uniform.

Indeed, the uniform was neat, black with gold along the edges of the jacket, gold piping along the seams of his trousers, and gold braiding that went around his left shoulder and under the armpit with several smaller braids that seem to radiate from the main braid like rays of the sun. The most interesting feature was that the man wore a silver mask that covered all his face except for his mouth and eyes. The Black Swan deduced that the man’s face was either scarred or he was just hiding behind the mask.

The guards saluted as the man in the dress uniform entered. He stood behind his chair as the guards helped the Black Swan into her seat and removed the handcuffs, and then took his seat.

“Guards. Leave us,” the masked man ordered.

“She’s dangerous sir,” one of the guards said, “Do you know who she is?”

“Yes I do. Now leave us, so we can have a nice chat. Have someone serve the dinner.”

“At once sir,” as the guard closed the door.

When the two were alone, the masked man looked at Black Swan and decided to break the silence.

“It is rare that we do get visitors Black Swan. Indeed, I am honored that you have decided to come from the Empire State to grace me with your company,” he said.

“I wish I could say the same,” she said. Trying to keep her voice calm.

“Yes. You are my prisoner, and I have sent a ransom demand to the Empire State for the release of you and your squadron. However, I can be persuaded otherwise, depending on your decision.”

“What decision is that?”

“In due time my dear. Right now, it’s time to dine.”

Just then, two men in white serving jackets entered and placed plates of food in front of the two only diners. The plates each contained a good size grilled swordfish steak and steamed vegetables. White wine was poured into goblets. The Black Swan looked at the masked man with pure defiance.

“Please eat. The food is not drugged. You have my word,” he said.

“What about the wine?” she asked, “And what is your name?”

“My name is of no consequence. However, if you wish of a name, I am known as The Phantom. The wine is good. Try it.”

The Black Swan did so and found it to be quite excellent. As for the rest of the meal, it too was excellent. The fish was juicy and tender. Melts in your mouth. The vegetables were tender and flavorful. During the meal, she kept her mind on her captor. He had a certain bearing about him. His voice was cultured, deep with a British accent. Also sounded very educated, probably an Oxford graduate. She deduced that this man is the leader of the pirate gang. The one thing she thought as the meal was ending was he was no pushover.

“Now Swan,” the Phantom said, “We can get down to business. I give to you a special one-time offer. Join me.”

“You think I will join someone who tortures his prisoners for sheer pleasure?” she said.

“I do not torture for pleasure my dear. The Shadow’s methods may seem unusual, but her methods achieve great success. Much better than the ‘truth serum’ being used now. You still have not answered my question, will you join me? Imagine what riches would yield were we to join forces.”

“I will not!”

“A pity. I hoped you would be reasonable. No matter.”

With that, the Phantom pulled his right hand from under the table that carried a small firearm of some sort. After pulling the trigger, a small pop noise emitted and a moment later, the Black Swan laid on the floor unconscious.

Chapter 4

The Black Swan finally awoke with a headache. When her senses cleared, she found she was in a cell similar to the cells she saw earlier. She was bound to a comfy, but strange looking chair. Her arms were fastened to the armrests of the chair while her feet were fastened at its base. She struggled to see if her binds would give a little, but they didn’t. The binds were made of leather, but the Swan felt a soft lining on the inside against her skin, so it wouldn’t chafe.

Several minutes later, her cell door opened and two guards entered and stood on either side then a third person entered. The third person was a woman with beautiful Asian features about her face: almond shaped eyes, defined cheek bones, beautiful, long black hair, everything. She stood about five and a half feet tall with slender features. The one thing noticeable about her were her hands, while a little bit on the tiny side, her fingers had long nails, making them appear like claws. As soon as this woman entered, she went to the right side of Swan’s chair and pulled a lever. The chair then tilted backwards slightly while the base rose with Swan’s booted feet to the level of the woman’s waist. The woman grabbed a nearby stool and placed it by the base and sat down. The guards then held Swan’s legs as the woman loosened the binds and proceeded immediately to remove her boots and socks, revealing nice size 7 feet with tiny toes proceeding in order from big toe to pinky in length. The Swan never used polish when she flew. When the woman was finished re-tightening Swan’s binds, she turned to her guards.

“Leave us,” she said, and the Black Swan recognized the voice, it was the silky voice she heard on the radio, the Shadow.

“Yes Shadow,” one of the guards said as the two left the cell and closed the door.

“Well now Black Swan. I think it’s time to get to know each other,” the Shadow said as she was lightly stroking the top of Swan’s right foot, “You and I are going to have a lot of fun together until the ransom arrives.”

Just then it hit the Black Swan why her boots were removed. The Shadow was going to tickle her at her own leisure. The thought scared her out of her wits, for the secret of her success as a pilot were her fast reflexes due to heightened sense of touch. The drawback was that this made the Black Swan insanely ticklish.

“Time now for a ‘few laughs.’ Eh Black Swan?” said Shadow.

With that said, the Shadow began stroking lightly on the sole of Swan’s foot. The Black Swan bit her lower lip to help prevent the laughter from escaping. But the battle she knew was a losing one. The corners of her mouth were slowly curling up, and she stopped biting her lip for her mouth was forming a smile. She held her mouth tightly shut to keep herself from laughing. The Shadow saw this and decided to up the ante a little.

“Well, well. I did not think you would fight me. I think it’s time to, as you Americans say, ‘Turn up the heat,’” said Shadow.

After saying that, the Shadow began using both her hands to tickle Swan’s feet. Using all five digits of each hand, Shadow scrambled them all over from heel to toe, and back again. She would occasionally taunt the Swan; saying “Tickle, tickle, tickle,” or “Cootchie-cootchie.” The Swan was shaking her head to ward off the sensations she felt, but after awhile; her will was gone.

“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”

“Ah, better,” Shadow said, “And just think that we only started.”

The Swan laughed up a storm, but she never said any other word. The only reason was the remains of her pride would not give in. Therefore, she just laughed. Sometimes the Shadow would concentrate on a single spot to see if she could get the Swan to laugh harder or louder. She tried Swan’s toes, which caused the Swan to clench her toes down, nothing else. She did find a spot just under balls of her feet, the “Solar Plexus” if you will. Swan’s feet twitched violently whenever Shadow struck there.

“Well,” Shadow taunted, “Looks like I found your spot. I am going to have so much fun with you.”

“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”

Shadow kept going like this for a long time, which felt like an eternity for Swan. After Shadow finally stopped, Black Swan sucked in gulps of much needed air.

“Guards!” Shadow ordered, “Get Swan over to rack.”

Immediately, the door opened and the two guards came in and moved the chair to an adjoining room, where a metal rack stood in the middle of the room. The guards released her bonds and placed her on the rack lying on her back. Black Swan didn’t fight at all for she was too weak from the Shadow’s tickling. After securing her down, the guards took the chair out and left. Shadow remained for only a minute.

“I’ll be back tomorrow Swan,” Shadow said, “Where I can enjoy tickling you some more. Get your rest. You will need it.”

The Shadow then left, and a man came in with bottles of water and broth. Black Swan took some sips and quickly fell asleep.

Chapter 5

Over the next four days, the Shadow ran the Black Swan through the gauntlet. One day, she would tickle Black Swan on her tummy. Next, she would go for her ribcage. On the third day Black Swan got a double dose; another woman would tickle Swan’s upper body while Shadow would tickle her feet. Now was day four, and the Swan was dreading for what was coming. All of her legendary iron will was completely shattered. The only moments of reprieve were when the man would come to give her some broth and water or sleeping. He had just left and the Shadow came in right after. A man whom Black Swan never saw and the same woman who tickled her previously accompanied her.

“It’s time Black Swan,” Shadow taunted, “Hope you’re ready.”

A moment later, Shadow went to Swan’s feet while the man to head and the woman stood to the right of Swan. During the whole time, Black Swan shook her head while screaming “No more! No more!” Shadow ignored her and began tickling her feet. Shortly after, the man began tickling the smooth hollows underneath Swan’s arms while the woman concentrated on her ribs and tummy. Black Swan couldn’t fight anymore for her fight was gone. Tickled right out of her by these monsters that actually enjoyed seeing Swan’s plight.

“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! STOP! NO-HO-HO MO-HO-HO-RE! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”

Swan laughed while her tormentors continued. They were so engrossed that they didn’t notice the klaxon go off. One of guards rushed to the cell and opened the door.

“Shadow! Phantom says we must evacuate!” the guard shouted, “Our radar shows at least four squadrons heading for us!”

“Blast!” the man cried, “Just as I was having fun!”

“Don’t worry,” said Shadow, “There will be other times.”

“Yeah. There’ll be other times. Right now, let’s get out of here!” the woman replied.

Swan’s three tormentors ran out fast. She didn’t see another soul until that familiar man who gave her water and broth came in just as she became unconscious.

Chapter 6

Black Swan woke up on a soft bed. She let out a low moan as she opened her eyes. Looking around, she saw she wasn’t aboard her airship. After awhile, a man entered her room. She recognized him immediately, for he was Nathan Zachary, leader of the Fortune Hunters.

“How you’re feeling Swan?” he asked.

“Tired, and hungry,” she replied, “Where am I?”

Nathan ordered some food brought up and answered, “You’re aboard my ship, the Pandora.”

Nathan knew what her next question was going to be, so he answered for her.

“We were monitoring all radio transmissions. So we sent a message to your ship. Fenn answered and we agreed to help search for you. The Empire State and Dixie loaned a squadron each to aid in the search.”

Just then came a knock on the door. Nathan opened it and a man pushed in a cart of food. Swan recognized him at once, for he was the man who brought her the broth and water. It was Nathan’s wingman, Jack.

“You!” she exclaimed.

“Hello Swan,” Jack replied, “Sorry I couldn’t help, but I was under orders to keep silence until the strike team came.”

After saying that, Jack turned and left. Nathan and Swan helped themselves to the food. After a few bites, Black Swan decided to break the silence.

“Did any of you manage to shoot down those pirates?” she asked.

“No,” Nathan answered darkly, “They all managed to get away before we could get close enough to strike. Don’t worry. We’ll find them sooner or later.”

“Oh yes,” Swan thought, “’Sooner or later.’ And sooner than they think.”

Black Swan rolled those words over and over in her mind. She thought of all the things she would do to Shadow when she catches her. Even though Shadow would be laughing; she knew that she, Black Swan, would have the last laugh.

“You okay Swan?” Nathan asked with concern.

“Yes. Thank you,” she replied and hopped off her bed. She got dressed and preceded immediately to the hangar.

THE END (for now)
