view counter has a maximum value and is stuck

The counter that keeps track of the number of views of an individual thread apparently has a maximum value of 65,535. The number of views of Biscuit's monster thread, "Early Experiences (Please Read and Contribute)" in the Post Stories forum has been stuck at that number for several days, although there have been several responses, and hence obviously some views, in that time.

65,535 is one less than 2^16 (two to the sixteenth power). So aparently there are only 16 bits available for the counter to use. (In binary, this number would be 1111111111111111.)

Myriads, can this be fixed?

Off the top of my head. No. It's in the code, not an adjustable option. Perhaps a later version of the code will correct for it.

Oh well, it will distress only Biscuit. Nobody else in the Post Stories forum is close to the maximum.

The second place thread, my story "The Session (F/m)", has just over 6,000 views, and it will take years for it to get up to 65,535.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I am distressed.

What's the fun of milking a gigantic thread for all it's worth for all this time if I can't even watch the views counter go up?

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to watch the Posts counter go up instead. Somehow I doubt I'll reach 65,000 on that!

PS Not a very observant diety, am I? I'm obviously the last to realize that the thread is apparently stuck at max views. Must have had too much ambrosia last week...

now unstuck!

The recent upgrade to a later version of vbulletin has fixed the problem! The views counter is now over 66,000.

We'll never know how many views were missed while it was stuck for more than 7 months; surely many thousands.

All those lost views... the horror, the horror... Good thing the upgrade fixed this crass bug before someone got hurt!
