One is hard pressed to find a tickle scene with Bette Davis, which should not seem too difficult, considering that she starred in over 80 films!
Well, there appear to be as many as five (count 'em, five!) tickle scenes in "The Great Lie," starring a vivacious 33 year-old Bette. Some of them are borderline, and none are totally obvious. You be the judge, though you'd be hard pressed to say that at least a couple of them don't seem almost obvious.
Bette and husband (played by George Brent) are frolicking newlyweds. About 30 minutes into the film, George tries to put on Bette's shoes, and mid-sentence, she grimaces and squirms, shakes her legs up and down and giggles "stop that!"
A few minutes later, George chases Bette around a tree, grabs her behind the waist and she shrieks. Then, in probably the most apparent scene she loses her composure mid-sentence shrieks, and tries to break free as he has his hands on her ribs. The tickling is apparently done by his right hand, away from the camera.
Then, later on, Bette falls on top of George and he goes for her armpits. Not much reaction from Bette this time, except a giggle and more "stop it."
Last but not least, Bette is laying on the bed, with stockinged feet. George wants her to get up, and he puts his fingers along the bottom of her feet. That causes her to move her feet and get up - but she's not in a good mood, so, no giggles or shrieks.
A rare find, this is.
