Favorite Artist?

Who is your favorite artist (painting, scupting, poetry, etc...) and what is your favorite work(s)?

Personally, I love Van Gogh. I can identify with his torment. My favorites would have to "Starry Night Over The Rhone", "Wheat Field With Crows", "Green Wheat Field with Cypress", and, of course, "Starry Starry Night".

My favourite artist would have to be the writer John Steinbeck. His writing is like poetry.

I like Van Gogh, too... "Starry Night" is one of my favorite paintings. Matter of fact, I was thinking of getting it tattooed on my chest (how outrageous would that be?)
My favorite painting is "The Scream." I think that's what it's called, anyway, painted by ?Munsch? Not sure about the guy's name, but it's a very cool painting...

I'm very eclectic when it comes to all forms of art. So, I like a variety. However, I'm partial to Michealangelo and Robert Frost.

I'm not a fan of art, but I think Picasso's work is cool. All that crazy Cubist stuff he did, like Guernica (see below), and he also led a rather interesting life. :)

Painting? Umberto Boccioni, Monet, and a whole gallery of others.
Sculpture? Leigh Heppell does some intersting erotic and sexual bronzework. I also dig Rolf Westphal and Vincent Glinsky.

For current artists I love Thomas Kincaid. His relationship with light is incredible.

Historically, there are far too many although I was never a fan of Picasso.

I really do not like all of the abstract art. I prefer art that looks like something real... and beautiful.

As far as artists, I love Michaelangelo. I went to the Sistine Chapel, and the ceiling is gorgerous, and I've seen the David... and it's incredible!!!

As for classical artists, I like several pieces by Belgian Surrealist Rene Magritte (http://www.ocaiw.com/magritte.htm), notably Empire of Light, The False Mirror, and Castle of the Pyrenees. My college art professor used to call such images "Visual Puns". I also get a charge out of Dutch Mathematician/Artist M. C. Escher (http://www.cs.unc.edu/~davemc/Pic/Escher/), famous for his impossible figures and optical illusions. I just love the head-bendingly mysterious imagery they present.

Among current artists, my favorites are SF/Fantasy Illustrators such as Michael Whelan (http://www.michaelwhelan.com/) and Wayne Douglas Barlowe (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books&field-author=Barlowe%2C%20Wayne/102-9436418-2360149). These two in particular create some extraordinary imagery. Like the surrealists mentioned above, they take impossible worlds and make them real. Barlowe, for example is most famous for his books Barlowe's Guide to Extra-Terrestrials and Expedition, wherein he creates entire alien physiologies and thoroughly works out virtually every detail. You will believe that these places and the beings which inhabit them are real.

I suppose the common theme in both cases is the way the artists present a vision of world unlike your own, and the viewer cannot help but feel wonder.
