I have many fond memories of these great old shows.

William B. "Bat" Masterson was a real man, born 1853 in Canada or 1855 in Illinois. He worked as a buffalo hunter, army scout and lawman and was known to make a wager now and then. The last 18 years of his life were spent as a sports columnist for The New York Telegraph. On October 25 1921 he died at his desk of a heart attack while working on his column.

In the TV series he is portrayed by Gene Barry.

I remember Paladin with Richard Boone, Rawhide with Clint Eastwood, Lawman with John Russell and Peter Brown, Tales of Wells Fargo with Dale Robertson. It seemed every other show was a western, then it became detective shows, musical variety shows and then sitcoms.

Maverick was a great show, starring a very young James Garner as Bret Maverick. And I loved visiting my Uncle Johnny and Aunt Edith who lived in Witicha Kansas. They had a color TV and Bonanza was always on the menu. We didn't get our first color set until 1970 or 1971.

"Have Gun, Will Travel" was one of my favorites,..... Paladin,....... along with Maverick. But don't forget "Wanted: Dead or Alive" .... with a young Steve McQueen,.... great show. Chuck Connors had a hell of a run with The Rifleman, too.

Great shows. The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, broadcast on the ABC network 1955-1961. The real Wyatt Earp was a somewhat different character than the star of the show, Hugh O'Brian.

OF COURSE! How did we overlook that one? Definitely one of the most long-term successful,... great cast, too (I once met Amanda Blake,... Miss Kitty .... interviewed her for the newspaper. We even had a drink together.)

Had another thought --- am I the only one who remembers the TV Western trading cards which appeared in the very early 60's?

Then there were others that I did not have much interest in like Sugarfoot, and Cheyenne, staring Clint Walker.

Oh, Cisco, oh, Pancho!! Let's went!! I had forgotten that one Osprey. I also remember Roy Rogers, and Hopalong Cassidy on TV in the early 1960's. Was Tom Mix's brother Chex Mix? (groan!!) Buffalo Bill, Jr. is one I just barely remember. Did Annie Oakley have a TV show?

Several posters have mentioned Gunsmoke, and I agree. It began April 26 1952 on the CBS Radio Network with the voice of William Conrad as Matt Dillon. The radio series ended June 18 1961. On September 10 1955 it premiered on the CBS TV Network with James Arness as that towering figure of Old West law and order. The last show aired March 31 1975.

Paladin and Gunsmoke were my favorite westerns. I could never get interested in Bonanza.

Those were my favorites, too. In fact, I have several HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL episodes on tape that I re-watch sometimes. I also liked THE RIFLEMAN, THE REBEL starring Nick Adams, and CHEYENNE. Does anyone remember a CHEYENNE in which Cheyenne is hung by his wrists over a fire, and we see his bare feet moving desperately just above the flames? Isn't it odd how some scenes stick in your mind?
