The Stars and the Sun Goddess

A/n: Something a little different between writing sequels and other things.

They used to say that in among the clouds there was a woman holding up the sun.

Back when the Earth first turned she held up the shinning star for ages, her strong arms and muscled legs tensed with effort and her golden skin beaded with sweat.

The plants needed sunlight to grow, and the creatures needed sunlight to see by. She was convinced that the Sun should never fall, and so she held it high for all to see, even when her feet and shoulders ached for the effort of it.

As time went by the plants started to shrivel and the creatures were too exhausted to play... But the Goddess was stubborn. She was sure the world needed her to hold the Sun, and nothing could convince her to fall to her knees and rest.

One day, as the last faun crawled to the shade, the Sun began to weep. It cried for the creatures hiding from it, and for the plants withering under its gaze.

As the Sun's tears shed from its eyes, its tiny brothers in the sky heard its cries. They flew through the heavens, invisible, and came to speak to the Goddess causing it pain.

But she wouldn't listen. Nothing would make her heft the Sun from her shoulders, nor could they lift the Sun themselves- though they tried. In despair, the Stars slid down her body-

And something peculiar happened- she laughed.

She laughed and laughed and laughed, and the Stars watched in fascination as her great shoulders trembled and her strong legs knocked.

As the Goddess giggled the Stars redoubled their efforts, dancing across her skin and twirling over her curves. They fluttered along her sides and twirled up and down her underarms, causing her to howl in laughter. Some teased her hips as the others swirled around and around her knees.

Slowly, slowly, the Goddess began to sink to her knees- so blinded by her own laughter that she hardly noticed the Sun escaping her grasp.

As the Stars threaded merrily between her toes, she forgot even to breath, cackling and curling to the ground.

When the Sun, golden and laughing, escaped her fingers and rolled away to let the land rest, the Stars slid up into the air and danced and danced in the dark blanket of the sky.

The Goddess, so tired from holding up the sun, fell asleep on the cool grass, and all the creatures came to sleep with her.

They say that in the morning, She stole the sun again. And in the night, the Stars twinkled and tickled her to the ground once more.

In fact, some say that to this day- the Stars still do this. And that when the Goddess falls happily to sleep, the they sparkle merrily in the sky-

Which is their way of smiling too.
