Rick Harvey was a "serial tickler"; he was mostly an ordinary 21 year old guy with a punk haircut; but he suffered from uncontrollable urges to tickle people without their consent-particularly attractive women. Most of the time he would tickle people in the street as they walked pass. Other times, he would introduce himself to them, invite them for a couple drinks and then lure them to a hotel, where he would start tickling them on the bed. Of course, this almost inevitably led to the victim running out of the room and calling the police.
Rick's tickle-compulsions caught up to him; he was eventually arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. While in prison, his compulsive tickling continued, which eventually led to him being moved to a solitary cell since his tickling of his former cellmates would often lead to violent fights. Six months into his sentence, a guard informed Rick that a representative of St. Paul's psychiatric hospital wished to speak to him; Rick consented to a meeting with the representative.
Rick was escorted to the room where the representative sat waiting. He greeted Rick warmly, and introduced himself as Mr. Dyson. Rick sat down. Mr Dyson disclosed to Rick his affiliation with St. Paul's, and made him a proposition: The doctors at St. Pauls believe that they could cure Rick of his pathological compulsions to tickle people within six months. So, if he would sign a contract which would effectively have him commited to the hospital, he wouldn't have to spend the next four years and six months in jail. Rick eagerly signed the contract.
The next day, he was driven to St. Paul's in handcuffs, escorted by two policemen. Once inside the main lobby, a security guard led them to the ward which Rick would be committed to. The guard unlocked the heavy doors to Ward B with a key card, and led Rick inside. Rick immediately felt relief by seeing the comparatively luxurious environment of the hospital ward compared to his prison cell. It was nice and wide open, with sofas and big (plexiglass) windows which the sun shone through, and a nice sized TV in the center of the room. After the security guards had him change into the patient clothing, the head doctor of the ward, Dr. Wilson greeted Rick. Dr. Wilson was a well-formed blonde woman with a kind face; the same kindness that Rick perceived in Mr. Dyson's face. She informed Rick that his therapy would begin tomorrow. Rick felt a flutter in his stomach, wondering what was in store for him.
