When you render a picture in Poser, you usually have three light sources. This is the icon in the upper left corner of the instrument pallette. (The ball with the three little things sticking out of it.) If you click on any of them, you'll get a right-side menu for the properties of that particular light source. One of these is the depth of the shadow cast by it. You can have it cast a deep shadow or none at all. I use very light shadowing to bring out more of the detail of my work. Also, a lot of Poser art on the Net seems to be along the lines of the seriously dark (at least in the BDSM genre), and my approach is more comic-style, so less is more with the shadowing in my work.

Actually, quite a bit of the direct shading is added later in post-production in ArcSoft PhotoStudio 2000. I add shadowing by hand where I see fit, rather than have a "blanket shadow" cover everything.

Hope this helps.
