Australia...I've always wanted to go someplace away from the madness infecting the rest of the world. And a country that started as a penal colony for criminals and cutthroats sounds perfect:)

If I was single, I'd say Malta. I went there while I was on ship in May, and I gotta say, the women outnumber the men 8 to 1, and they are ALL gorgeous! Plus, they LOVE Americans! I really want to go back to that place!

I'm no American, so sorry to intrude... ;)
But if circumstances dictated that I had to emigrate from my beloved Bavaria, I'd go either to Edinburgh/Scotland or Capetown/South Africa. Melbourne/Australia would also be worth pondering.
Any idea why there are so many more women in Malta? I'll tell you: No jobs in Malta, all the men have to work abroad (many in Libya, Ghaddafi owns a third of Malta). It's a barren, sunburnt rock with very little green, but a lot of churches and nice restaurants!

It's funny you mention that. When we were there, there was a Libyan Airport, shopping district, and clubs that were off-limits.

Since I live across the river from Sarnia, Ontario, I'll throw in my two cents on Canada. The best thing about it? The people. I have yet to meet a "bad" canadian. Everyone is friendly beyond belief. And not to knock the US, but people in Canada just want to have a good time, and it doesn't matter who you are, what race you are, what kind of music you listen to, etc., etc. I know that a trip over the river will be a GUARENTEED good time with no hassles from anybody around me.
And those gorgeous Canadian women? Be warned....make a move on a canadian woman, and be prepared to back up your talk:)

Of course. or England.
SEan you have it wrong. Oz was not started as a colony for criminals and cut throats. It's a product of the English Penal system on the 1700s where stealing was a worse crime than kidnapping or rape. Stealing was a hanging offense.
The only person who could pardon a thief was the King.
Many people did not want an execution on their hand, so even if a thief stole above the execution amount they'd accuse them of just below. That way hanging was not the immediate sentence.
In these cases the thief would be put on rotting Brit warships. At the time England had no real jails.
Finally to alleviate this they started using Oz as a Penal colony. New Zealand was the original pick but the natives were a bit more rambunctious so Oz it became.
The original Australian "criminals" were in reality petty one time thieves, usually men or women who had stole food. In fact they were authorized to work for money for a few hours a day.
A great book on this is The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes. It might be the best history ever written and gives a fascinating look into the English Penal system of the day,
By the way. Ship captains who didn't treat the inmates decently might very well find themselves as a member of the colony.
Eventually Australia was where the Irish Political prisoners were sent.
The first crime committed on Australian soil was a rape.

Not having been very good at learning other languages even when I was young, it would have to be an English speaking country. And there aren't many of those where professional baseball is played, so I think it would be Australia. (With no offense to our Canadian members, it is just too ^^%$#ing cold in the winter up there.) :D

I'm serious! Go to many clubs in the US, and you get attitude from everybody. Canada? Like I said, people there just want to have a good time. I've partied with more complete strangers in Canada than I can count. Doesn't matter if their life is in complete disarry and they're unemployed and miserable....when it's time to party, it's like nothing else matters. That's a great attitude to have:)

.......dont get your history lessons from Tronny either, he is very selective, but not always in directions you might expect.
I know I am not supposed to be on this thread and no doubt I will get an E mail warning me off, but for me it has to be the U.S. if I am really honest. I have a villa in spain and a lovely cottage in one of the remote areas of the U.K. but as jazz musician most of my life how can i fail to be a U.S. fan. I have spent a large part of my life listening to and reading about American music, and of course a long time trying to play it. So I have spent time reading about the jazz greats performing in New York, Sanfransisco, Chicago and New Orleans.
I have spent so long as a teenager dreaming about places like "The Royal Roost" "The Blue Note" "Birdland" "Greenwich Village" " Jazz at the Phillharmonic" " Shellies Man Hole" " The Light House" " The five deuces" "Apollo Theater" "Birds nest Club" "Mintons" "Fifty Second street" " Famous Door" " Down beat club"......you get the idea....
So keep your wits about you, I am headed stateside very soon, just as soon as I get clearance from the mods.

Historian I know.
Hughes wrote the best history of early Australia. The problem with many Aussies is they're embarrassed about their "government man" past so no one ever bothered to write a decent history, until Hughes did it, and he had to be cajoled into it by a yank.
Outside of The Fatal Shore I think the best Aussie history is An Exiles Lament by Malcolm Clark. I'm not sure it's a history because he was a penal colonist writing things as they happened. It's written in Olde English so at times it's difficult to follow, but it's very good.
As for Canada :). Gotta love a country where escorting is legal, but body slides aren't!! LOL. All in all it's a great country. I LOVE Windsor and Yonge Street in Toronto.
Oh if anyone is ever in Toledo I just found out, a place called Lorains offers tickling. I found it out from an ex Lorains gal I tickled today.

Interesting stuff you're mentioning about Australia... I used to think Australia was cool and exotic, until I read more about what they did to the Aborigines. I thought the European colonists and early Americans were shameful enough in their abuses toward the natives here, but the first European Australians were even worse in their treatment of the Aborigines. While most of what America's forefathers did to the Native Americans can be classified as neglect and heartless exile, the Australians engaged in outright and thorough slaughter of the Aborigines.... A shameful history indeed... (no offense to any current Australians, of course)

Be careful what you say though. It wasn't "European" Australians who engaged in the wholesale slaughter of the Abos. England specifically forbade warfare on them. It was the second generation Aussies who started the genocide campaign.

I've just always had an itch to see the UK. Feel a certain gravity toward the place. As far as choosing a particular type of living space...maybe some out of the way country town where history still lives.

My sentiments exactly. I remember I didn't want to leave. I even inquired about Landed Immigrant Status.
Here's something else that isn't just a catchphrase to pay lip service to: with Canadians, the Rule of Law is a fact! It's something they really believe in up there. Here in the United States, they talk about the Rule of Law, they pompously pontificate about it, but in fact, we have the rule of Men. Think about it.

If I had to leave england, my destination would depend on what I wanted to achieve. If I wanted to blow my mind and enjoy the company of like-minded lunatics, it'd be the USA.
