Does anyone know how to do this? I'm trying to get a couple of photo captures from a few DVD's but all I keep getting is that damn purple screen. Anyone know of a way/program around this bull?

I'm guessin' you're tryin' to capture a screen from your computer's DVD player. Why do I guess this? 'Cause what you're describin' is an alpha channel pass-through. Gibberish? Sure, if you don't deal with video editing. Most folk are too sane to do such...

Essentially, the short of it is that you need to either output from a DVD device to a video input, and capture from there, or get used to disappointment. There's a bit of effort in nabbing the buffers of an alpha channel'd source, and I've yet to see anyone do such. Would be nice if they did, mind ya. Just never seen it.

DVD player out to a capture card's input is the only way I know to get an image from a DVD with any accuracy. Otherwise, you get a purple, green or blue screen, depending on the program playing the DVD.

Ok, so my DVD-rom on my computer is useless for capturing stills then? freaking' fantastic!
Luckily I do have a regular/external DVD player and a video capture card for my computer. I actually thought of doing it that way before but didn't think it'd work. I'll give it a try though, thanks.
