They won a game. Can you believe it? I actually felt sorry for John Smoltz and gave him a standing Ovation myself. His line was 7 1/3 innings 7 hits( I believe) 2 runs on Beltran's 2 run homer, no walks and 15 strikeouts. It was a tremendous performance. I found myself rooting for srikeouts for him to maybe tie or break the record. He had 14 strikeouts after 6 innings. Smoltz deserved better. But Martinez was brilliant as well. A 6 inning pitcher? Ask the Braves if he is a 6 inning pitcher as he spun a 2 hitter at the Braves. If you like a good pitchers duel. You got it the first 7 innings of this game. The Mets put one in the win column and return home to face the Houston Astros in the Mets home opener this afternoon. Final Score from Atlanta- The Mets 6- the Braves 1.

well guys and gals, i think i will throw my hat into the stadium and say that THE NEW YORK METS are lookin gvery promising this year. The lineup and the pitching are very strong this year. Plus how bad can we be when we have aquired 2 new players for the WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS. This year its the METS going to the series

How about another Subways series!! Go Yanks!

Today from Shea Stadium the Mets opened their season at home. Atfer a pitcher's dual for 5 innings( 1-0 Astros ). The Mets took a 3-1 lead in the 6th inning. The Astros got to the Mets bullpen( This pen really sucks ) to take a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the 8th. The Mets explode for the second straight day for 5 runs in the 8th inning to take an 8-4 lead. That would be the final score. The Mets 8 - Astros 4. From Shea Stadium Mets win 2 straight and improve to 2-5. Next game is Wednesday against the Astros at Shea Stadium.

Neither the New York Yankees or Atlanta Braves are playing up to their potential, with the Yankees at 4-8 and in last place, and the Braves at 6-6. It is early in the season, though, and my bet is that before long, both teams will be back playing the kind of championship style baseball that they have always played for the past decade plus. I also dont agree with Yankee owner George Steinbrenner publicly blasting his team yesterday. While that is his right, I believe it is far too early in the season for him to be doing that, as with 150 games left, the team has plenty of time to get things turned around.

The Mets lost tonight 5-4 to the Phillies. While at Yankee Stadium the Tampa Bay rookie league team took on the Yankees. As usual, A-Rod drove in 6 runs against the D'Rays. Can't do it against Boston or the Mets(last year was 0 for 21 against the Mets). But he can do that in meaningless games like the Rays.

The Mets a club record 7 homeruns as they pounded on the Phillies 16-4. This was a game that featured 2 homeruns by Jose Reyes and Victor Diaz. One by Doug Mientkiewicz, Mike Piazza( that would have left Yellowstone Park ) and a grand slam by David Wright. The Mets move up to 7-7 and tied the Braves and Phillies and Nationals for 2nd place or last place and trial the Marlins by 1 game. Next up the Marlins in Florida for a 2 game set before returning home for 6 games. 3 with the Nationals and 3 with the Braves.

My Braves are doing well so far. 15-10 and tied for first in the East with the Marlins. They have done so without really having any hitting at all, but rather have been relying on awesome pitching. They begin a series with Florida tonight, and I think if they hit at all, have a good chance to win their 14th straight division title, with the great pitching staff they have.

ah yes... I found this thread again. Mets are 26-24 after 50 games and trail the Marlins and the Braves by 2 games. Tightening up the screws in the National League East. The Mets are now finally getting good pitching from Glavine and Benson. Ishii who is 1-3 outdueled Dontrell Willis tonight pitched really well for only the 2nd time this year. Zambrano has pitched well lately without the results will probably go Wednesday against Arizona. A Mets win tomorrow and a Phillies win against the Braves tomorrow and the Mets will be in 3rd place 1 game behind the Braves and Marlins while the Nationals will trial the Mets by a game and the Phillies will be 3 back of 1st place. It will be a great season of baseball in the National League East.

In the end, it will be the Yankees and the Red Sox with the Orioles fading late( I hope I am wrong ) and Toronto having fall out of the race by the All-Star break. Four teams DO NOT have a chance to win the AL EAST and if you believe that to be true then you just have not been paying attention for the last 10 years. For the one in my sig, I just did a Google search (under "Images") for Dodgers. An equivalent search for Mets yields this:

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&q=%22Mets%22&btnG=Search

K-Skate was kind enough to host the image that I wanted.

The little one of which I used 10 copies in my post was made for me by Giggles32. I don't know how she did it.

However, bad news for Red Sox fans:

It seems apparent that the Wild-card team is coming from the AL Central, since both the White Sox and Twins have better record than both the Red Sox and Yankees. So if the playoffs were today, the defending champs are out. It might take 95 wins just to make the wild-card, as it seems the Orioles are not leaving without a fight

well, the AL East os gonna be a three team race, and the Orioles will have a say at what you do. I should be shot for saying this, but as good as the White Sox pitching is, they don't need to score a lot of runs, because it seems you cannot score off them, and remember, the Red Sox and Yankees have six games apiece against them left, and looking at the schedules, the White Sox and Twins have easier schedules left, while the Yanks and Sox have murderous stretches left

The White Sox will fall eventually. And as far as the Orioles go, their best players keep getting injured so while they will put up a good fight, I think if they get a playoff spot it will be the wild card.

My Atlanta Braves are in a slump, having dropped their fourth game in their last five, last night in Washington to the Nationals. In spite of this, they are lucky to be only percentage points out of first in the NL East. That division could be very interesting all year, with only 3 1-2 games seperating top from bottom. I do hope they pick it up soon, and get a decent division lead, because this mediocre play they've been having lately is boring!

Last Night, the Mets were buried by the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-0. The Mets left 7 seven men on base in the first 3 innings including 5 men in scoring position with less than 2 out. The listless bats included Carlos Beltran , Mike Piazza , Cliff Floyd and Doug Mientkiewicz who left small colonies of runners on base all night long. Craig Counsell( 3 for 5 with 2 RBI )and Jose Cruz Jr (a 2 run homerun in the first inning ) were the hitting stars and Brad Halsey ( a former Yankees farm hand ) helped Arizona come to New York and spank the Mets. For the Mets that is 2 straight loses and and 7 loses in their last 11 games. The Mets now drop to 4th place( behind the Washington Nationals ) and trial the Marlins and Braves by 2.5 games.

Do you believe in miracles? The Kansas City Royals ( the worst team in major league baseball ) have done the impossible. They have sweep away the Yankees with an impressive 5-2 victory. Think about this Yankees fans, your team got outscored 13-6 by a team that came into the series with an ERA of almost 6.00. So please check your attitudes with how mighty your team is at the door when replying. Now you go to Minnesota. Are you confident? Do you feel good? As a Mets fan I feel good about my team. How about you? :evilha: The Royals were 13-37 when the Yankees came in. The Royals are now 16- 37 after the Yankees leave. Mike Piazza kicked in with a 3 for 5 and 2 RBI to help the attack. Mets are now 29-26 on the year as they came into the game only 1 game back.

I am rooting for the Mets today, just because I don't like the uniforms of the hated jints:pThe Mets went down in the first game of the doubleheader by the final score of 6-3. Kaz Ishii gives up 5 earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. He piched well early but could not get clutch outs and allowed Brent Tomko to hit a bases clearing double in a big spot was Ishii's downfall. Game one belongs to the Giants as they stop an 8 game losing streak. Giants 6 - Mets 3. Game two in an hour on ESPN.

You are right. It should be a great pitching match-up with Kris Benson going for the Mets and Jason Schmidt going for the Giants. Mets need a win to prevent falling into last place. The Giants have not swept a doubleheader since they swept 3 doubleheaders in 2000. So it's the Mets and the Giants in 45 minutes on ESPN.

My Commentary on the "National League Least, ahem, East"

Has anyone noticed how crazy this division is? All five teams in the division are at least 1 game about 500, with the Marlins in last place, and right now, the Nationals in first place. No team has managed to take any kind of a commanding lead in the division, although right now the Nationals are riding a five game win streak. This division, logically, should end up as a race between my Braves, the Marlins, and Phillies. Atlanta should be playing a lot better then they are, but, at the moment, have been devestated by injuries, with pitchers Mike Hampton and John Thomson on the DL, and slugger Chipper Jones perhaps heading for surgery that could keep him out 2 months or longer.
In all the other five divisions in baseball, each division leader has a lead of at least several games, and has established themselves as a solid team. Not in this division.
Historically, the NL East, while dominated by the Braves since they moved from the West in 1995, has had a couple of times where the division winner was less than stellar, and eeked out a division "win" in a very close race, such as in 2001, when the Braves less than dominated the competetion with only an 88-74 record, and a two game decision over the second place Phils. 1973 also comes to mind, when the "Ya Gotta Believe" Mets, led by the late Tug Macgraw's battle cry, won the East with only 82 wins, in a year when the division was almost as close as it is this year, with the exception of the last place Phillies.
I have been waiting for someone in this division to get hot, and put a lead of several games up there. So far, it hasnt happened. Each team in the division has been very streaky.
Barring an unexpected run by one of the clubs, I forsee that this divsion could possibly stay as it is now for the rest of the year, with all five teams hovering around 500, or a few games above, or below, and possibly yield a division "winner" who finishes with a total of 85 wins. I'm not saying that its definitely going to happen, because someone could unexpectedly get hot, but looking at each team, they all have their share of strengths, and also very glaring weaknesses. The Braves, for example, have major injuries. When healthy, they have a top starting rotation. However, even when everyone gets healthy, they have a very weak offense, and lack a real bullpen closer, as Dan Kolb has been a major disappointment.
So, my call is that this division remains close all year, with a division winner who isnt very solid. I could be wrong, but this is how I see it now.

Mitch

Hate to disappoint ya, Mitch, but the Braves are toast. Not enough offense, and Kolb is not your answer at closer. It seems once the Marlins get going, the division is theirs

Right now, The Nationals are starting to pull away in the East ( 10 game winning streak in tow ) and the Phillies and the Cubs ( with all those injuries ) are wildcard leaders. The Cubs should they get their injuried back and in TOP form will be formiable. This will be an interesting race indeed.
