Right now, The Nationals are starting to pull away in the East ( 10 game winning streak in tow ) and the Phillies and the Cubs ( with all those injuries ) are wildcard leaders. The Cubs should they get their injuried back and in TOP form will be formiable. This will be an interesting race indeed.

My Braves are still doing poorly, now only 1 game out of last place in the NL East. Now, if their troubles weren't bad enough, a 3rd starting pitcher, Tim Hudson, has gone on the DL, joining Mike Hampton and John Thomson. While I concede that they very well may not win the NL East this year, my one hope is that they win on the night I go to see them in Philly, Friday, July 1, which is two weeks from now. They have lost the last 2 years I went to see them, so this year I hope they can squeeze a win for me.

I'm sorry to hear that, Milagros, my friend. My Braves now might have to place a fourth member of their starting rotation, Horatio Ramirez, on the DL. Luckily, they have been playing pretty well lately, and are only a few games out of first.
As a side note: Iam going to the game between the Braves and the Phillies next Friday night, July 1, in Philadelphia. Based on an every fifth day rotation, the starting pitcher for the Braves that night should be John Smoltz, who has been their best pitcher this year. The Braves have lost the last two years when I've gone, so I really hope they are due for a win this year. If I do getl lucky enough to see Smoltz, I hope he can make it happen, with the way he's been pitching lately.

Late June and my Orioles are still in first place. Red Sox are only a game behind now, so that's got me worried. Still, considering everybody thought they were 3rd best, at best, in the AL East makes it even more amazing what they're doing. Not to mention all the injuries we've gone through. At one time or another (and sometimes at the same time), Brian Roberts, Sammy Sosa, Larry Bigbie, and Luis Matos have all missed time. Our ace, Erik Bedard, is still out. Ditto Javy Lopez. Now B.J. Surhoff is on the DL and Melvin Mora may follow. Still, we're hanging on to first. Amazing. It may not last, but it's been one hell of a fun ride.

The Braves are playing really well right now. They completed the sweep of the Orioles today, raising their record to 41-34. John Smoltz pitched a complete game, allowing only one run, to raise his record to 8-5. Right now, he is pitching lights out. As I've mentioned, I will be going to see them on Friday night in Philadelphia, and, providing there are no rainouts, or injuries, Smoltz should be pitching that game, assuming he stays on his usual every 5th day schedule. I hope they win when I'm there that night, to break their 2 year losing streak when I've gone to the game. Iam very pleased with the way they've been playing lately, firmly entrenched in 2nd place, scoring runs, and getting fine pitching. Hopefully it wont be long before they get into first place. I was happy to be at Fenway Park last night. Thyough it is a little hard to see what is happening sometimes from thwe 14th row of the right field grandstand. I didn't like some of the calls by the first base umpire as he wasn't able to tell safe from out. But I did have a good view of Bill mueller's doublee. Which from my point of view, looked initially like a grand slam. But it was nice to see Manny hit a 2 run homerun into a nearby area closer down to the field. :woot:

Braves shut out the Cubs and Kerry Wood tonight 4-0. They now trail the Nats by only 4 1-2 games in the NL East and lead the wild card, and this with all their pitchers on the DL. They said Tim Hudson should be back soon, and John Thomson maybe within 3-4 weeks. What an interesting first half as we enter the All-Star break. I will start first in the American League.

The East Division has four teams at .500 or better and these 4 teams are separated by 5.5 games. Anybody's race? You betcha. But by September this will still be a 2 team race as the Red Sox and Yankees are just too good ( sorry to say ). In the Central Division, The White Sox lead by a large margin over the Twins, Indians and Tigers. The Tigers are only 2 games under .500 headed into the break and with those young pitchers Bonderman, Maroth and Johnson the future looks bright for the Tigers. Lets also keep in mind there is still a wild card birth still to be won. Could the Twins, Indians or Tigers win it? We will see. In the West Division, can anyone believe the the A's are only 7.5 games behind the Angels? Can the A's who are the hottest team in baseball keep up this torrid pace? The Los Angeles Angels better keep their eyes on the A's. This is the same team that I said stunk in preseason ( wipes the egg from the face ). I still believe that it will be the Twins , Angels , Red Sox and Yankees going to the playoffs. I still don't believe in the White Sox and think they will hit the skids at some point.

In the National League, there are 8 teams at .500 or over. Five of those are in one division. We will start there.

In the N.L. East -How about those Washington Nationals? Major League baseball has owned this team for 3 years and never put a dime into the team. They wanted this team out of Montreal so bad they refused to put a winner out there. Amazing. The Nationals are getting great pitching and timely hitting. The play great defense as well so this team will be tough to beat. Atlanta trails Washington by 2.5 games. Here is a team that looks like a M*A*S*H* unit. The have lost Chipper Jones, Mike Hampton and other and the Braves continue to run like a well oiled machine. Would it surprise anyone if the Braves win this division for the 14th time? It would not surprise me. The Florida Marlins have great pitching but are trailing by 7 games in this division. That is a great surprise. They need Mike Lowell to hit like he is capable of hitting to make a run. The Phillies trail by 7.5 games. They have an awful bullpen and unless they address that the Phillies will not be able to compete in this division. The Mets don't hit enough , field enough and run the bases like a little league team. We are going to run until we get tagged out. The Mets do that too much. The bullpen somedays dominates and other days couldn't get me out. They lost 2 Yankees games they were leading late, they lost 2 games to the Pirates they were leading 5-1 and was tied 3-3 in the other game. The Mets trail the Nationals by 8 games. I said this team would go 91-71 in the preseason. This will not happen. Braves will win this division.

In the Central, The Cardinals are way ahead of the pack. They will not be caught. The Astros are in 2nd place. They are over .500 by a game. The Astros are an interesting team. This team if they can continue to stay healthy and get the great pitching they can compete for a wild card birth. The Cubs are under .500 in this division by a game but are getting healthy with their pitching but they need more hitting if they are going to compete. In the preseason I said that the Cubs would win 90 games. This will not happen. Brewers and Pirates will win about 70 to 75 games each and the Reds are all justwaiting to be traded to a contending team.

In the West, The Padres are the class of this division. Regardless what anyone says. They have enough hitting and and pitching and they play good defense. The Padres will win this division. The surprise in this division has to be Arizona who occupies 2nd place. They might stay there. This team is getting good breaks. They might be buyers before the trade deadline. The Dodgers got off to a 14-2 start. Someone should have told them there was still 146 games left to play because they have played awful since their torrid start. The Dodgers are probably buyers but should probably be sellers. This team is not going to get better. The Giants are keeping hope that Bonds will be back. But does anyone care? Let's face facts, the sooner the Giants learn to play without Bonds the better that team will be in the future. The Rockies are not a factor this season. Playoffs will feature, Braves, Cardinals,Padres and Nationals.

Football plays their All-Star game at the end of the season. The baseball All-Star should not determine a thing. It hadn't until the 7-7 game in Milwaukee when they screwed it up. Explain to me what homefield advantage means in the World Series means to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays or the Kansas City Royals? No other sport has their All-Star game determine anything. ticklingfeet4fu
07-13-2005, 11:31 AM
The Mets start the second half of the season on a 10 game homestand. This homestand will decide if the 44-44 Mets are contenders or pretenders. They open up with a 4 game set against the Atlanta Braves. They then set their sights on the 1st place Padres who come to Shea for 3 and then the Los Angeles Dodgers finish off the homestand with a 3 game set next weekend. If the Mets go 7-3 or better they will contend. If they do less than 7-3 they will probably pretend the rest of the season.

Tonight was an awesome game between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets at Shea Stadium, with Tom Glavine and John Smoltz, former teammates with the Braves for 15 years from 1988 to 2002 as opposing starting pitchers. Both pitched fine ballgames, each man going 7 innings and allowing but one run. For us Braves fans, we had a happy ending, as Atlanta scored a run in the 8th, and hung on, to win 2-1. Another great day so far. Red Sox win, Orioles lose, and now just for the yankees to lose as well and it will be perfect. :woot:

Kerry Wood back to the disabled list again? I am shocked. I would have never have thought that. That remarkable staff behind Kerry is suppose to make the play-offs for Natural and those wonderful Cub fans. ( To be honest the Cub fans are wonderful and very knowledgable fans ) ( Please don't tell Natural I said that.) But then the bad news, the Cubs blew a 5-1 lead and were beaten by the Reds this afternoon. To be fair and objective, the Cubs pitchers I felt were squeeze on some pitches and some of the calls that when against the Cubs were VERY questionable. I thought the Cubs were screwed on some calls and am surprised that Dusty Baker did not argue more vehemently.
In Philadelphia, the Dodgers picked up a 1-0 victory behind Odalis Perezwho pitched a one-hitter through 7 innings before handing it over to the pen for the final 2 innings. A great victory for the Dodgers especially since they gained a game on the Padres.
In New York, The Padres were trying to prevent a sweep at the hands of the Mets and were unsucessful. All-Star Jake Peavy gave up 7 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings as the Mets laid waste to the Padres 12-0. Kaz Ishii went 6 innings and gave up 4 hits and walked 5 before giving it up to the pen that held on for a 12-0 shutout. Mets are now in 3rd place in the NL East behind Atlanta and the Nationals( who play later tonight ).

The Dodgers head into Shea Stadium on a two-game winning streak. I'm happy that the Mets swept SD, but now is the time for the Mets to fall into a funk. :D

The Dodgers head into Shea Stadium on a two-game winning streak. I'm happy that the Mets swept SD, but now is the time for the Mets to fall into a funk. :DYou can keep that dream alive for so long. You have to face Zambrano , Martinez ( that would be Pedro ) and Benson. Your Dodgers have not hit all year. Why would you start now in a stadium that is not friendly to hitters? But I will let you have this dream for 1 night. Dream your 3 game sweep with hope of getting to the play-offs. But by this time tomorrow you will be posting how angry you are that your Dodgers let one get away. Then you have to face Pedro on Saturday and by Saturday night you will be talking about salvaging one game from the 3 game set. I am only hoping for 2 out of 3. With the idea that I want your team swept away just like the Padres were today. If you do win though Mils, I promise to be a good sport about it.

I have never been to, and will never go to, a home game of the hated jints. I would want to have an Uzi and a few bodyguards armed with Uzis in order to attend one. :p

Would you really drive all the way to St. Louis to be surrounded by Cardinals fans?

Yes, I would, but Cubs fans always come down to Busch, as well as Cards fans come up to Wrigley :D

I find it bad enough to be surrounded by Mets fans, but I couldn't stand it at a home game in SF.

The Red Sox manage to pull off a win with one of the best White Sox starters going last night.

Now I believe that the White Sox thirdbaseman has learned not to drop a foul pop up when Manny Ramirez is the batter. :p

Now I just hope that they can pull off a win against Garland tonight :D

Game 1 to the Dodgers. I hope you enjoyed yourself last night Mils. It was really a fun game to watch. Now pay attention here. Pedro goes for #12 today. I hope you bring some antiacid tablets for your stomach. I get the feeling you will need it. :p

I didn't enjoy the outcome (Mets 7, Dodgers 5).

I did enjoy seeing Pedro pounded for 5 runs, all earned. Too bad our bullpen failed to hold the 5-4 lead. :( :(

Too bad our bullpen failed to hold the 5-4 lead. :( :(You may have enjoyed Pedro giving up 5 runs but he won the game and you guys did not take advantage of the Padres losing in Philadelphia. BTW, what do you then of Jose Reyes who was 4 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases?

I am sorry you lost the game Mils, but I am very happy with the outcome. Pedro is now 12-3 with a 2.79 ERA.

A starting pitcher who gives up 5 earned runs doesn't deserve to win (except perhaps in Colorado). He was lucky that the Dodgers' pitching stank worse, that's all.

Never saw Reyes in person before yesterday. Obviously he looked great today.
