I created this thread for baseball only, so no discussion of the Super Bowl is allowed here. :D

Mandatory baseball content: The Dodgers won the World Series in 1955, 1959, 1963, 1965, 1981, and 1988. :D :D :D :D :D :D

Hey milagros, I was asking my die-hard Cub fan dad what he thought of the Cubs not signing Rafael Furcal. He said it was no big loss because of Furcal's history of DUI's and such. He said that's why the Dodgers would only sign him for 3 years cause thats the most you can insure a contract for in MLB is 3 years.

Assuming Milton Bradley and Jeff Kent are both back next year (sorry if there's been any deals with them, I haven't been following the deals too closely), are you concerned about more problems in the Dodger clubhouse next year?

Yes, led by Mike Scioscia, the wonderful Angels of 2002 came back from a 5-run deficit in game 6, won game 7, and thus defeated the hated jints, crushing the hopes of their evil fans, and killing the dream of The Evil One (Barry Bonds) to win a World Series. :D

One of the great heart-breaking losses for the hated jints of all time, right up there with their loss to the Yankees in 1962. :D

Clemens led the NL in ERA at 1.87, nobody was close to him. (Second best was Petite at 2.39, then Willis at 2.63.) 1.87 is fabulous.

Piazza batted .251 last year. OK, he was playing hurt, but he batted .266 in 2004, so I don't think he will ever get back to what he did with the Dodgers (which was an incredible .362 in 1997, and .336 in 1996).He is a catcher for goodness sakes. Of course his numbers will go down. But if he becomes a DH only Piazza will hit 35 homeruns and drive in 90 runs again. That is a fact. By the way, he was hurt in 2004 by being switched back and forth from catcher to firstbase and injured his wrist twice that season when baserunners ran into his wrist at firstbase.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20051227/us_nm/baseball_robbery_dc_4

MIAMI (Reuters) - Former Major League Baseball pitcher Jeff Reardon was arrested in Florida in connection with a jewelry store robbery, police said on Tuesday.

A four-time all-star who earned more than $2 million a season at the height of his 16-year career, Reardon walked into a jewelry store on Monday and "handed an employee a note stating that they were being robbed and that he had a gun," Palm Beach Gardens Police said in a news release.

Reardon was arrested at a nearby restaurant and the stolen money was recovered, police said.

Reardon had 367 saves as one of the dominant relief pitchers of his era, according to Baseball Almanac. He logged 73 wins and 77 losses with an earned-run average of 3.16 in a career that began in 1979 with the New York Mets.

He also played for the Montreal Expos, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves, Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees before retiring in 1994.

Reardon, who was being held at the Palm Beach County jail, played in three World Series and earned more than $2.5 million per season from the Boston Red Sox in 1991 and 1992, Baseball Almanac said.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now I've come into a lot of money and blown it, but not anywhere NEAR the kind of money this guy must've blown to actually need to resort to robbery. For 16 years he made AT LEAST 6 figures (it only says he made 2.5M at the height of his career). So either this guy squandered it, or he was just doing it cause he REALLY likes jewelry LOL. But of course, I guess other people have blown bigger sums of money. Mike Tyson, MC Hammer come to mind.

milagros317
12-27-2005, 06:33 PM
I saw a news report that said Reardon earned over $9 million total in his baseball career. That's enough, even after taxes, for a prudent man to put aside a nest egg for his life after baseball. Obviously, he didn't.

Maury Wills, in his autobiography, wrote that he had over $2 million at the end of his career, and that he spent it all on cocaine and coke whores. He said it almost killed him. Maury is OK these days, I spoke with him last March in Vero Beach at spring training. :D

I don't know what Reardon's problems are. :(

12-27-2005, 10:05 PM
I've found two more links about Jeff Reardon's arrest. Apparently, his 20-year-old son Shane died of a drug overdose in February 2004, and Jeff was taking prescription medications to deal with his depression. :(

I know, I know, I said I wouldn't post until Spring Training, but I thought I'd put my little .02 in it

I am happy for all the teams who have improved greatly during the offseason. And I am pleasantly pleased with what the Cubs have done so far, a much needed lead-off man in Pierre, (Lee and Ramirez should drive in buckets of runs) quality set-up help, and a right fielder in Jacque Jones, if anything will provide us a much better defensive outfield than last year. I will be even happier if the trade for Tejada comes through, if it does, OMG, it will be cartwheel flips for me. Although I would hate to see Prior go. But even if we don't get Tejada, we will be a much better team than last year, and since the Cards and Astros haven't really improved, we have a golden opportunity to win the Central

As far as predictions go, you guys know I don't have to repeat myself, you know how I feel :D

I don't know, maybe it's me, but do you feel that spring training really defines how good a team will be like some experts do?No it does not. You can have a great spring training and then come out the gate 2-15. Look at the Yankees during their runs at World Titles. Look at their spring record. They stunk every year. Comments in NY were what is wrong with the Yankees? What is wrong is they win when they need to.

milagros317

What you need is a GM who will look carefully at BB/9IP (walks per 9 innings ptiched) before acquring a starting pitcher. :DHas nothing to do with his walks per 9 innings. Nolan Ryan had a high walks per 9 innings total. The fact is that I could hit Kaz Ishii. So appartently did everyone else too. :sadcry:

milagros317
01-09-2006, 07:43 PM
Nolan Ryan was unique in many ways (like throwing the fastball at nearly 100mph at age 46). I wouldn't use Nolan's lifetime 4.67 BB/9IP to excuse anybody else for doing the same. Anyway, it was down to 3.26 the last year that he pitched 200+ innings (1990).

(Ishii has lifetime 5.65 BB/9IP at present.)

amk714
01-09-2006, 07:56 PM
Nolan Ryan was an awesome pitcher (and not just because he used to be an Angel :p). He recorded 2,416 strikeouts, the most in Angels history, and holds the MLB record of 5,714 total SO's. He threw seven no-hitters, also a league record (four of them while he was an Angel). :D

Comments in NY were what is wrong with the Yankees? What is wrong is they win when they need to.

I really don't think spring training is an indicator of how the season will be or how a player will perform. Look at the 1993 Mets. They had a great spring and lost 100 games that year. They were by far the worst team money can buy.

As far as the players go. Most of the time, the players are either batting against a guy who is destined for double or triple A by opening day, or, if he bats against one of the starting pitchers, that pitcher is just working on getting his pitches right. He is not looking to be competitive like it's the 7th game of the WS. He is just looking to get his work in..

Hopefully this will be the year that the Mets take over NY. My advice to Delgado and Wagner is not to drink the water in Flushing. I hear a rumor it's laced with Kryptonite. Buy bottled water instead.

Oh man. My Orioles just picked up Kris Benson from the Mets. Perhaps not surprisingly, Baltimore is more a-buzz about ANNA Benson, and the shenanigans she'll likely bring along with her. Well, at least 2006 shouldn't be boring! :p

Nice signing of Furcal who is undergoing surgery on his knee ( I believe ). Sounds like you are not going to start the season healthy. When are you going to Vero Beach,Florida this year Mils? :idunno:

I'll say this... when the Dodgers do get healthy, they're looking like the favorites in that division. Of course, you always have to be concerned about the health of Drew and Nomar, but they'vemade some nice moves otherwise. Furcal (as you mentioned), Mueller, Lofton, and the trade for Baez and Carter. Now there's rumors on some of my Orioles sites that the O's and Dodgers may be trying to work out a deal that sends LA Javy Lopez. Would probably be good for both teams, as Baltimore now has the defensively superior Ramon Hernandez at catcher, and Lopez only has one year left on his deal (only making about $7 mill, I believe), giving LA the time to wait on one of their young catchers to be ready. Good in theory, anyway. But the point is, if healthy, the Dodgers look pretty potent.

milagros317
01-23-2006, 10:24 PM
That sounds like an interesting deal. But who would the Dodgers give to the Orioles?

Adam
01-24-2006, 02:35 AM
That sounds like an interesting deal. But who would the Dodgers give to the Orioles?

The rumor I read was that the O's would get back 1B Hee Seop Choi and C Dioner Navarro. Basically, you guys wouldn't be losing that much. Of course, most of what I read was pure fan speculation. But if it does happen, it wouldn't be a bad deal, IMO. It would give the Orioles a young, backup catcher to develop. And in Choi's case, it would move him from cavernous Chavez Ravine to homer-friendly Oriole Park. The Dodgers would get Lopez to fill their hole at catcher while waiting for Martin (I think that's the last name of your top catching prospect) to develop. Seems like a win-win situation.

milagros317
01-24-2006, 03:41 PM
You should be warned that Choi is not a good defensive first baseman.

Some interesting thoughts on the Orioles-Dodgers move. I think it would favor the Dodgers for now. The Orioles would benefit in the future. Good luck with Anna Benson. You will need it. This is the first time I have heard of a team trading the wife and wishing they could keep the player. :D

Well, now it's rumored that Javy Lopez may be staying put. But, who really knows. Baseball trades are on-again, off-again all the time. Molina and (ugh) Piazza are still out there, so there may be teams that decide to go with either of them as a short-term fix. As for Anna Benson, I actually heard her on our ESPN affiliate today (on one of the local shows). She sounded OK to me. A little out there perhaps, but nothing terrible. She strikes me as more of a fun-loving, free-spirited person who just likes the media attention. As long as Kris Benson doesn't come to the AL and get bombed, I doubt Baltimore will take her antics too seriously.

Or that is if you believe Anna Benson. Doesn't it strike you as funny that Pittsburgh gave up Benson for NOTHING and the Mets did the same. Omar was asked if this was a baseball trade or an Anna trade and he had the BIGGEST GRIN on his face before he said it was a baseball trade. He can't tell the media or Anna that Kris was traded because of her. Everyone in New York knows why Kris was traded. It is unfortunate we got Jorge Julio with a 3-5 and 5.90 ERA for Kris but when you are trading Anna Benson you will take anything in return.

This is true. Still, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt before judging too harshly. About Julio, yeah, he can be a headache. He can be absolutely dominant, or not be able to find the strike zone. Good luck with him. At least the Mets got John Maine along with him. He doesn't project as highly as he once did, but he could end up being a solid back-end starter or long man. Time will tell.

I'm sorry, but as I'm a bit older, I grew up a Yankee fan with the great Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra and Roger Marris. When they built Shea Stadium for the Mets in Flushing in 1964, at first we thought it was another pavillion for the New York World's Fair, which was also in the same general location. Eventually, as kids, we understood that the Mets were the National League replacement for the departed Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants.

When a team has had a lousy season the year before, like the Dodgers did in 2005, a good spring training can help erase the memories and the losing habits. :D

When a team has had a lousy season the year before, like the Dodgers did in 2005, a good spring training can help erase the memories and the losing habits. :DIf you believe that then that is okay. But you know better than that. The Mets teams of the late 70's and early 80's had great springs then would for kicks and giggles win 63 to 68 games a season. Of course, Joe Torre who I really believe was a good manager for the Mets could only do so much when your best player is Lee Mazzilli.

milagros317

Well, it can't hurt the players' confidence to have a winning spring. :D

They are 13-7 or something like that, do you really think they will come out firing out the gate lets say 8-2 because of their great Spring Training record???

milagros317

A final score from Comiskey Park in Chicago the White Sox 10 - Indians 4. After the almost 3 hour rain delay, the White Sox received 2 walks and a sac fly to make the score 4-3 White Sox. Then Jim Thome hit a Homerun that landed in Wrigley Field. :D That gave the Sox a 6-3 lead that they would never relinquish. Bad news for the Tribe C.C Sabathia left this game in the 3rd inning with a strained abdominal muscle. He did not factor in the decision. Final from Chicago: White Sox 10 - Indians 4.

Well a great day of baseball. Right now, the Dodgers are in the 8th inning trying to come from behind as they trail the Braves 11-7 with two men on and two men out. The Dodgers have now made it 11-8 with an RBI double and they send the tying run to plate. In other games around the majors today, the Cardinals whacked the Phillies 13-5. The Cubs bombed the Reds 16-7. Big concern here is Carlos Zambrano was handed a 5-0 lead and left the game after 4 plus innings piched with the game tied at 5. If the Cubs hand their ace a 5 run lead he must do a better job. The Brewers beat the Pirates 5-2. The Mets gave Tom Glavine his 276 career win with a 3-2 victory over the Nationals. Arizona and the Rockies are in the 11th inning tied at 2.

In the American League, The Red Sox behind a 3 run homer by David Ortiz gave the Rangers a headache in Texas 7-3. The Orioles outlasted the the Devil Rays 9-6. The Tigers behind great pitching by lefty Kenny Rogers and Chris Shelton's two homeruns beat the Royals 3-1. For Rogers that is his 191 career victory. In games that are still going Angels and Mariners are knotted at 3 in the 7th inning.

On that same thought, I hope that Chipper Jones is okay. I saw that play where he slipped trying to field that slow grounder. I was watch FSN Bay Area and they seemed very upset as well that Chipper got hurt like that. It is good that people other than Braves fans and myself root on a classy guy like Chipper Jones. To me, he is a terrific player and a class act. I have enjoyed watching his career despite the fact he has made a career out of killing the Mets. Speaking of classy. Mitchell thank you for the compliment in the other thread where I have been wrapping up the games. that was really cool of you. And yes, I have, in fact, considered being a broadcaster.

Damn, what a SWEET game for Orioles fans tonight. 2 outs, bottom of the 9th, 3-2 count, bases loaded for NY... O's closer Chris Ray vs. the clutch Hideki Matsui. Ray fires... and absolutely FREEZES Matsui with a 3-2 slider. Orioles win, 6-5 in the Bronx. Now, I know my O's still have a ways to go before being a contender again, but damn that was sweet. Chris Ray looks like he's going to be an absolute stud as a closer. Amazing, since he's never even pitched above AA. His stuff is absolutely nasty. He and outfielder Nick Markakis are two youngsters to watch on this team.

Get this...Michael Barrett was being interviewed on one of the Chicago sports talk stations yesterday morning, and they played a clip last night of what he said. The Cubs have lost something like 25 of their last 27 games, got swept by the awful Marlins, got swept for the season by the mediocre Padres, and are 9.5 games out of even the wild card race. And saturday I think it was, Wrigley Field drew its biggest crowd since 1979!! This is exactly why the Cubs may very well never win another World Series or even get in one period. If they have awful teams and still sell-out, there's no incentive for the Cubs' owners to build a winner.

And as far as Barry Bonds goes, he said one time something to the effect of "stop talking about Babe Ruth. I'm gonna pass him up, he's old news." Barry Bonds would need steroids just to carry the Babe's jock strap, or Hank Aaron's for that matter. http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b134/oldschool73/censored.gif Barry Bonds, http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b134/oldschool73/censored.gif his 715 bogus home runs, and http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b134/oldschool73/censored.gif whoever is stupid enough to think he's anything special.
