A former Clatskanie senior class president faces 18 charges of sexual crimes, three of them felonies, in connection with alleged incidents that took place while he was attending the high school.

Witnesses told a Columbia County grand jury that the student, 19-year-old Lane Svenson, forced a teenage boy at Clatskanie Middle/High School to touch Svenson's private parts multiple times, and exposed himself in public and private places to unwilling witnesses, according to an indictment released Tuesday by Columbia County District Attorney Steve Atchison.

Svenson, who is attending a college out of state, faces three counts of first-degree sexual abuse, felonies; three counts of third-degree sexual abuse, six counts of public indecency and six counts of private indecency, all misdemeanors.

Atchison said Svenson will face adult charges because the investigation began after he had turned 18. One of the felonies is alleged to have occurred in February 2004, when he was 18-years-old and in his senior year.

The grand jury, which came to its decision last week, said one of the incidents is alleged to have occurred as early as Sept. 1, 2001.

The teenage boy named as the alleged victim still is in the Clatskanie school system. The Daily News does not print the names of victims of alleged sex crimes.

Students, teachers and high school administrators testified to the grand jury.

Clatskanie School District Superintendent Mike Corley said Tuesday that Yolanda Brackman, who was the high school principal at that time, investigated the incidents that allegedly happened at school or during school activities and reported them to the city police department.

Corley said Brackman took "appropriate disciplinary action," though he did not elaborate.

Svenson regularly landed on the honor roll, played basketball and was elected senior class president.

Svenson's attorney, Ron Hoevet of Portland, said Tuesday that the college freshman would come to Columbia County in March for arraignment. Hoevet declined to say where Svenson attends school.

Hoevet and Atchison said Svenson will not be jailed pending a trial.

"They want to cooperate," Atchison said,
