Alternate Players

http://www.free-codecs.com/ (This one is fantastic , for all you guys who cant have/download the above players for whatever reason (spyware, viruses etc.) check this out this site. It has alternative players for the above, plus any codecs needed for them to work plus more.)

No more error mesages for sofware/codecs that arn't avalible for wmp or rp.

I have one question though: when I have a clip that doesn't run, how do I find out which CODEC I am misssing?

If this is with Real Player then you have no chance (weve all downloaded a clip at some stage to play in realplayer only or it to say the software is not avalible!)

If this is with windows media player then you need simply download and install 1 (maybe 2) codec pack use the most popular ones and you should have the desired effect.

Quick time ive never expirienced this problm with.

with media player classic, this player plays near enough most files without downloading codecs anyway, but in the event youre still having difficulty repeat the steps taken for windows media player. k.

Reffering back to your original question though there is no surefire way of locating the specific codec to my knowledge, the best thing to do is download and install a few packs and it should be in there. any more probs/questions pm, me

Lately several sites popped up wich are using a flash plug-in to show clips (for instance Google's video site and YouTube). It is difficult to catch the actual clip files, but when you do you end up with an .FLV file which doesn't play in any common player like RealPlayer or Windows Media Player.

For those who want to view those clips, here is a player specific for the Flash Movie Format:

VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) will probably play everything under the sun.
