View Full Version : John Roberts nominated for Chief Justice, snubbing Scalia and Thomas

The only reason I can see for Bush not nominating Scalia or Thomas for the top post is that they are both ideologues, while Roberts is not.
This would make Bush smarter than I give him credit for.
If Bush nominates for the remaining open spot someone other than a conservative die-hard, it would definitely bolster that thinking.

This is one of those rare moments where Bush makes a decision I agree with. Now that O'Connor is leaving the Court, Roberts is the only Justice (or potential Justice, rather) with some decency. The rest of the Court is a bunch of special interest whores....

WHA WHA WHAT!!! I cant believe my eyes..let me clean my glasses and check my eyes for catracts!! ROFL
now that Ive done that I can still read hivoltage and Macphisto's comments I still cant believe it.
Bush has finally done something right...oh no, now were truly in BIZZARO WORLD!! ROFL
Seriously I like this choice as well. Bush finally got something right. Now Im not as against him as some of you are, and Im also not as gung-ho about him either. I only say with all that he has had to deal with (2000 election, 9/11, Afghanastan, Iraq, Katrina and now 2 justices) he has dealt with more crap flung his way than any other president in recent memory and for that I respect and feel sorry for him. If he had decided to give up a while ago I wouldnt have blammed him, hell I dont know anyone who could have dealt with all of this in 5 years and not made a lot of mistakes.
This decision will go a long way with people to maybe think of him as less of a puppet...but if he doesnt find another middle-of-the-road justice for the other spot it wont do anything for him.

hello are you serious??? just another example of bush trying to sneak something past congress and the senate. come on you people. i dont like the supreme court, in fact i have lost respect for them when they decided the election in 2000, taking the votes of the american people and literally tossing them aside. buttt if anyone should be the chief justice, it should be a current member of the supreme court. its only fair, and after all this is supposed to be a fair administration right? should give it to sandra day o connor and make her stay on for another five years. she gave all the deciding votes. and its about time that a woman become chief justice, dont you think? (sits back and waits for the onslaught)
isabeau :scared:
ps you two have my vote, cant be any worse than what we have now, and did i read you right robace?? you feel sorry for bush? you have to be kidding.

Hiya isabeau..I will be contacting you soon, Im at home now. I look forward to us speaking soon. As far as the other comments I can understand your anger at the Supreme Courts, I also have my issues with them. But on the whole most things seem to go 50/50. But we can look forward to Having Mrs. OConner on the court when it re-opens on October 1st. I just heard as Im typing this that Bush is going to get Roberts confirmed first then find a replacement for Oconner later. And that she would be on the bench at the start of the session. As for feeling sorry for Bush, as from one human being to another I do. Not as a voter to a politician. Just as a matter of humanity I feel sorry for him. I mean look at what he has to deal with. I think anyone would have rightfully so brokendown and given up after everything that is thrown his way..those that are his fault directly I dont feel sorry. But to have at the very least 9/11 and Katrina in a span of 4 years is overwhemling to see. So in the aspect of 1 person to another person (not as a politician) I do feel sorry for him. I dont think as strong as I am Id be able to deal with those kind of disasters.
As far as Oconnor being Chief Justice, she wants to go...shes tired and wants to help and be with her ailing husband. I respect her decision on not to stay and to ask her to come back and take it would be forcing her to make a choice between her carrer and her husband...and that should be her choice not one that "special interests" or "agenda's" should dictate. As for a woman Cheif Justice on the whole I think its time. I would be okay with that. Hey maybe if Bush was really smart he'd appoint Hillary Clinton for that spot. She was a lawyer, and it would keep her away from running for president. Hmmmm
just a thought..although maybe its not as crazy as I think.

hey robace glad to see you are safely home and i added you to my yahoo. as for feeling sorry for bush i suppose when you put it that way it makes sense. he has aged since he took office i will say that. and i didnt know about ms o connors husbands health problems. i should research before opening my big mouth. anyway i sit here watching the procession for viewing reinquists body lying in state and still feel that someone who is now seated on the court should be made chief of justice, not someone brought in. just my opinion.

Thanks isebeau, you will be added very shortly. Also glad to see I cleared up that "feeling sorry" thing. Also lastly, yeah I can see how it would be better to have someone on the current court elevated, but most of those on the court now to me have been there so long and so swayed by one side or the other that I think fresh blood is needed, and needed badly. I personally hate the "life long" appointments, these people have no accountability and can do what they want. In some ways maybe thats good, but I for one can and have also seen the pitfalls in this as well.

Believe it or not, I had a lot less problems with Bush before Iraq. I think he followed the right procedures to engage in war with Afghanistan. If he had been smart, he would've stuck with nation-building that country, because the people there were more appreciative of our intervention. Iraq was an operation that would've required even more international aid, and unfortunately, he jumped the gun. Why he did this... I'm not sure if we'll ever know. I just hope that Bush can continue moving in a more moderate direction. Roberts was a good choice for Chief (even if this is a rare occurrence where a new Justice becomes Chief before even sitting on the Court for a while). Let's hope he picks another moderate to fill O'Connor's position.
This decision will go a long way with people to maybe think of him as less of a puppet...but if he doesnt find another middle-of-the-road justice for the other spot it wont do anything for him.
I agree, but I still think he's a puppet. He just seems to be a puppet that is actually starting to think for himself. (Either that, or Karl Rove has figured out that there's only so much he can get away with.)

Heh... thanks for the compliment, but honestly, I'll be in Canada by 2008. I wouldn't mind being Canada's Ambassador for the U.S. though.... lol
