the hearings begin today for the confirmation of judge john roberts. who will watch? and what do you think? will it be a heated hearing? will he be confirmed to the supreme court? and do you agree that he should? my two cents worth to quote robace, i dont care about him being elected to the supreme court, yet i still think someone who is already seated on the court should become the chief justice.

Considering that throughout our history most Chief Justices have not be elevated from the Associate Justices, I don't have a problem with that not happening here, especally since I don't think I'd like to see any of them elevated.

I wont watch it. its just going to be a liberal witch hunt.

sighs that wasnt the question. and i think we have gone beyond witch hunts in this modern age. anyway, i didnt know that the other chief justices hadnt been sitting on the bench previously. thank you whoever responded to that.

I think I'm with you on this one, Jim. Elevating Associate Justices would breed a good 'ol boy network, and nothing would ever change at the top. I much prefer to see new blood come into the chambers, bringing a fresh perspective on things. I hope that happens here.

Roberts should be good. I don't think the Democrats will get very far in trying to oust this guy. He's a lot more moderate than most of Bush's choices, and for that reason, I hope Roberts is confirmed in such a way as to encourage Bush to continue bringing in moderate nominees.

frankly, i don't like him, as he was one of the judges who ruled that the president has the right to detain people indeffinitly for years without charges or trial. Having him as a supreme court judge is scary.

I agree Cosmo, but here's the sad part: he's a saint compared to people like Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, and Edith Jones.

I admit i'm not familiar with those judges, but i'll take your word for it Mac. And i suppose he's better then Gonzalas.

Thomas is the infamous "Anita Hill" Justice that is known by many as a black man that makes rulings like you would expect from a white supremist. His nomination hearings were marred by a sexual harassment scandal. You can find lots of dirt on this guy all over the net.

Scalia is the supposed constitutionalist Justice that actually ruled like a constitutionalist during the recent eminent domain fiasco, but more often than not, he's known for looking after corporate interests over that of the individual, unless that individual is Dick Cheney. I have a little more respect for him than I used to, but that's not saying much.

Edith Jones... well... let's just say she is a potential nominee that makes Bush look like a liberal.

Clarence Thomas = Bill Clinton's libido + Jesse Helms' politics.

He's currently the frontrunner to be the first Supreme Court Justice to accidentally appear in a "Girls Gone Wild" video.

Hi Isabeau. Well, Roberts is a little more moderate than I'd initially suspected, so that makes me feel a bit better about him. Unfortunately, if we're wrong, it will be too late to do anything about it. lol

btw, we're still around. Perhaps we'll sneak up on you later and give you a tickle. ;)

i'm having a bit of trouble understanding why Roberts wont give a straight answer. he hedges around things, like the right of privacy and the abortion issue. why is that? why cannot he just answer? some of the senators were getting very frustrated, and i have to say i cannot blame them.

and btw Shadow you never did sneak up on me and give me that promised tickle. did you get my pm yesterday? i'm thinking my pms dont work.

no i am not kidding. take a look at his record. he has helped others most of his life. and about what happened on that bridge omg people no one is perfect, least of all you. or me. and he wasnt even drinking and he was young. he has paid two fold and more for that mistake. he would have made a wonderful president. i will not allow you to put him down, he is trying to help us. as i said before many times, he could have retired long ago and lived in luxury. but he chose to stay and work for the american people. how many here could say the same? how many, if you suddenly won the lottery, would continue to do a job? or live in luxury ? or whatever you chose to do with the money. this isnt making much sense because i['m pissed. i hate when people put him down. walk in his shoes for one day, live with the memories he has had to live with, remember how john jr. must have looked after days in the water, how two brothers were shot down in the prime of their life? and then to wonder if he is next?
and thats all i have to say about that

If you consider making massachusetts a huge welfare state and having some of the highest taxes in the country good, then i stand corrected. the mans a complete joke. a drunken bum.

i dont see how that can possibly be his fault , maniac half the country is on welfare. so you still havent proved anything to me. now the hearings are over and since this thread is supposed to be about that, i'm wondering what happens now? does the senate vote?

First the Senate Judiciary Commitee votes, and they will vote to send the nomination to the full Senate. Then the Senate debates it, after which the Senate will vote. Nobody is (yet) threatening a fillibuster when it comes time for the full Senate to debate.

*sigh* Unfortunately that's proving true.

Democrats can't define themselves as the party that's against everything Bush does. Bush is far from perfect, but he's not perfectly wrong, either. He makes some good decisions from time to time. Roberts was one of those.

Pick the battles you can win. This is a no-win for the Democrats if they continue to assail a potential Chief Justice the public has already all but accepted.

Attention Democratic Party: It's a simple excercise in language but it's harder than it sounds... try and find a way to phrase all of your political beliefs such that you are "for" something rather than "against" it. It makes you sound much more constructive.
