Thanks Venray! It's been two solid days now of "no server found."

Ya I know. I havent been able to log in there either. BigJim's site was down as well but is up and running again.....
HDS has told me that he is not sure what the problem is, probably needs a database compression....
So in the meantime...pull up a chair and join us....all are welcome here..... :cat:

I don't know what kind of server TT runs on, but if it's Windows, it could have been screwed up by the buggy patches Microsoft unleashed (er ... "released") last week: http://isc.sans.org/diary.php?storyid=765

What is is...2 days now? It's irritating but somehow is nice to take a little "mod" break for a while.
I havent heard anything from the admin at all...hopefully we'll hear word soon. My TT email addy still works so hopefully that means something.

I've been getting "Server refused connection."
Usually when a server is refusing connections, it's a problem related to the daemon running the server. Like MistressValerie suggests, if it's IIS from Microsoft it could have been broken by a patch...or two...or three. But if it's Apache, any number of things could be wrong.

vbulletin only runs in unix and unix-based shells, so they're not running a windows server.
sttklr
10-19-2005, 05:27 PM
Apache may be offline then. That would explain why the server is refusing connections on port 80.

Damn. Port 80, buggy patches, daemon running,unix-based shells.I wish I knew what the blessed hell you guys are talking about. Im so ignant when It comes to computer jargens. Or jergens.

Please do correct me if I am wrong on this, but doesn't one have to pay a service to have a site on the Internet?
If that is so, could it be possible someone just didn't pay the bill, ... ontime, or worse, at all?

I dont know, Stormy. The admin may not be too visible but I don't think he'd abandon the site completely like that. Not without telling us or anything. I hope nothing has happened to him. :(

My sentiments as well. The last thing I recall he posted was that he wanted to do an upgrade to the board but was too busy with work to attend to it. I hope that he is OK.

I have to disagree with you Jeff. You could probably run it on cygwin under windows. I'm not saying you would want to - just that you probably could.
I have to run cygwin on my Winos box to get gimp working.
The message is that the server refused a connection on port 80. To me that means the server itself or some kind of firewall is blocking. A good firewall wouldn't tell you anything at all - just eat your request packets.
A quick reconfig of my Apache 2 server here to not "listen on port 80" gives the message "The connection ... " so my guess is that for some reason the Apache config has been changed to not serve on that port.

sure, with enough bending and twisting you could probably run it on an xbox too, but I think you know what my point was.

If something had happened to TT, and the host had shut him down for non-payment, wouldn't we get a 404 instead of connection refused?

OK - Jeff I concede. I was going to try running it (or and OS clone) here on my 2000 box but sanity prevailed. Hmm - Xbox eh?
From what I've seen so far the site is turned off by the administrator for whatever reason.

Hope TT is OK, but as any of us who do web page design can tell you,
that it only takes a few minutes to throw up an index page with a brief
explanation of whats going on. You can even park your domain off site from your regular server to display an "under repair banner"
Hope they get it straightened out, it would be a huge loss to all!

It's going on a week now -- Valerie, have you tried contacting the Admin? You would think that he would have contacted his head Mod via email or something ...

Hi, W&P,
I will try e-mailing TT again, but so far neither Ness nor HDS has heard from him and a mutual friend was unable to reach him on IM. I can only conclude that he doesn't know what happened to the board (i.e., on vacation without Internet access) or is unable to respond for some reason. I sincerely hope that he is alright :(

What about that new virus that's going around now (Trojan.Vundo.B)? I know my (fairly new) laptop caught it, and killed it, and I just kinda threw up my arms and said, "I give up" ... !!
Could that be a possibility?
(I'm no techie genius here ... I used to be, but that was back in the day of real mainframes (Tandem Non-Stops), nor do I want to be anymore! So for those of you that are, I'm just asking a possibility question here.)

Im really starting to worry now. I wonder if there is ANYONE out there who knows the man personally and has a private email addy or phone number or SOMETHING to contact him by.
.....
I really hope we get some answers soon. I've tried emailing him twice now and have gotten nothing. He's frequently absent from the site for weeks at a time sometimes so Im really hoping that he simply doesnt know there is a problem. I have no idea who the hosting company is (maybe someone can determine that from the stuff Missy Val posted) so I cant even contact them to report the site being down...dunno if that would even help. >_>
