View Full Version : Countdown to Daytona
38 Days, 23 hours, and 38 minutes to be precise.
If there are any members (besides me, Mimi and Isabeau) who care, I'd love to hear who you're rooting for.
Testing has begun at Daytona and the wimpy Hendrick boys are showing good times, but THEY GOT NUTTHIN'
I continue to support Tony...hoping Little E has a better year...and keeping my eye on Carl Edwards...
Anyone, anyone, Bueller?

I also watch for Carl Edwards because he's good and he has the same last name as me.
Since little E wasn't doing well in the end, I was going for Mark Martin because he's a good racer and you never hear anything but good things about him, so I'd like to see him go out with a championship... but Viagra as a sponser just doesn't look right. Is the next female driver going to drive around in the Summer's Eve Ford? Though, it would give a whole new meaning to "burning rubber" in the Trojan Chevy Monte Carlo. :xpulcy:
Love the Daytona 500, the SuperBowl of racing. I just hate that lull in between football and the race. Luckily hockey is back to help me through.
:couch: <<< me on the couch , the day of the race ( without the dust )

As for the rest of you, YAY! We are now at 38 days, 13 hours and 56 minutes. I'd say we've all got a great bunch of guys to root for.
As for the Summer's Eve Ford...I do believe the Busch Series has a Butt Paste car dirven by a female driver. Some sort of diaper cream I think?
Chevy and Ford have made major mods this year to their cars (a whole new model for Ford even) So maybe will the Dodge guys, having a year's headstart, have a slight advantage?

I'm not a big NASCAR fan myself, but I regard it as legitimate sport, unlike....oh, I don't know....say, WWE for example. :xlime:
A few years ago, my cousin had a Daytona Party in which 20 or so folks gathered to watch the race on his big screen. This was the first and last race I ever watched from start to finish. During the race, one of the cars hit the wall, crashed and burned, killing the driver who was one of the major contenders. Certainly put a damper on our party.

um that would do it. must have been dale earnhardt senior right? thats when i began watching, after he was killed to see how it would be handled. and i got hooked, first on the colors of the cars. then as i got a looksee at the drivers i always picked who i thought was cute lol but also who i considered a good racer.

I am also a Nascar fan, for the last 20 plus years. Used to watch back when fellows raced and then got out of their cars and fought after the race, most of the time. I have to agree that Mark Martin would be at the top of my list because of the person he is both on and off the track. Edwards is fun to watch, but I also would like to see Jeff Burton do well. I like the Monday night show on the speed chanel during the race season with Michael Waltrip (from my home KY and one of my favorites) but I enjoy the humor of Kenny Schrader also. So many cars, so little time. Budweiser shoot out-Twin 150's-and The Race, can't wait. Great thread.
Oh yeah, love Kenny Schrader. I'd be happy as a clam to see him run a good race at Daytona, too!
Mimi ;)
There are few things as funny as Ken Shrader and Mikey Waltrip on Inside Nextel Cup (the Monday night show Pokey refers to). Sometimes I swear Ken is just going to wander off the stage in disgust with Mikey's antics. Throw Kenny Wallace in to the mix and I could watch them all for hours.
Hearing Drew mention the 2001 Daytona sure caused my heart to wrench this morning. I sat in complete and utter stupefaction watching that all unfold. I can still recall the feeling in my chest when Mike Helton accounced Big E was gone. Years later, when I saw Nascar 3D on IMAX, they showed Darrell Waltrip's face as he announced the race and the crash...the ecstacy of seeing his little brother cross the finish line first and the horror of seeing his long time friend hit the wall and his expression as it became apparent that Big E was not gonna get out of that car on his own. Jeez. Ah well, getting all emotional about such a thing is just a product of my raisin' y'all. ;)

I remember watching that race and not thinking twice about the wreck because it didn't look as bad as all the tumble and burn wrecks over the years. Being a big fan of Dale's since he became the "Man in Black" my heart sunk like I lost a friend, when they announced his death and I'm not the type to get all caught up in movie/sports stars. Maybe witnessing it live just made it different than hearing or reading about it. I was just on my way out to a friends house and came down stairs to catch the update on his accident , figuring broken bones and such and couldn't believe it. I was stunned. I'm glad I decided to record the race when he won the 500.
I just hope little E can win a championship now.

One of the amazing things about the wreck was that Dale was actually blocking for Little E and M Waltrip so one of them would win the race and that was the first time in could ever remember him blocking anyone and not trying to win. That was some day, one that would be nice to "do over".

Oh, he can. It may not be his time yet. Too much nonsense over there at DEI. Gotta get the personnel issues straight I think. But Jr can and will do it eventually. Plenty of time.
Speaking of DEI personnel issues, you know what I'm gonna miss? The Dale Jr and Michael Waltrip commercials. Particularly the Domino's ones. Anyone remember...
"I have pizza for Mr. Nascar."
"that's me"
"no, I'm Mr. Nascar"
"ok. I'm the Czar of Nascar"
"El Presidente de Nascar"
"KING DADDY"
ROFLMAO. I'd get that on Tivo and watch it over and over just laughing like an ass.

And doesn't that just fall under the "no good deed goes unpunished" category?
Sigh. Ok, putting the cynicism aside, that fact is played up in the Nascar Imax quite a bit, thus adding to the melodrama of it all. SR was not known for selflessness in a race was he? Things that make you go "hmmm"
And poor Kerry Earnhardt. Boy did he end up with the leftover DNA or what?

Oh god, the commercials!! They are some of the greatest things about the entire racing season! Some of them are so frickin hilarious! I look forward to each new season to see what new funny stuff they'll come up with in the ads!
I think my all time favorite, though, would have to be the one they came out with before Sr died, and Sr, Jr, and Taz are all in the car together and Sr is rattling on and on about what it takes to drive and Jr is in the other seat rolling his eyes and mimicking him with his mouth....omg I STILL laugh my ass off when I'm watching older tapes and catch that commercial!
And my favorite track and race of the year is always the Bristol night race. There's not much in this world more exciting than that evening!

I have regretted that post about little piggies almost since the minute I posted it. :disgust: :disgust: :o
OH ARGH...favorite race..least favorite race...I think I have to judge the races as they happen and I have new favorites every year. I like good side by side racing, with passing and maneuvering. Cautions annoy the heck out of me and make me want to bang my head against the wall. I don't like seeing lots of twisted metal and limping race cars.
The Southern 500 at Darlington was always a favorite. No longer a choice. Last year's race at Darlington, while set up to fail, didn't- and was great and now they're building more seats and I think we'll not lose the lady in black yet.
So I think I'm going to have to go with any race at Darlington for now.
Least favorite - I don't know, any of the road courses I guess, but really I love them all.
And I have to admit to liking the hoopla that surrounds speed week at both Daytona and Charlotte. You can eat, sleep, and breath racing for 10 days in a row twice during the season.

The Restricter Plate races really drum up a lot of drama but only normally the last 25 laps or so. Of course there is always the "Big One" that happens. You just have to hope your favorite isn't collected up in it. The Road courses are really hard to watch as they don't change a whole lot. If you get behind you really can't catch up without a miracle. But like you IK, I enjoy them all.

I continue to support Tony...
Zzzzzzzz...zzzzzzzzz..."CRUNCH"! Sorry about ya little car, Tony.
I'm not much into Nascar even though Mopar has gotten back into it; I'm more of a road course fan. However I am one who respects Dale Jr., Michael Waltrip and Sterling Marlon. Any of those three win or anyone driving a Dodge and I'll be satisfied. One thing that I really don't like about the Dodges though is that they're running 360's instead of 340's. Any Chrysler fan knows that the 340 was their fastest small block. A 360 is good on torque but, the HP just sucks! If those cars were running 340's they would be whooping ass!

In fact, I have a bit of a bet wherein I have chosen Dale Jr as my hero for this race. He doesn't have to win, he just has to beat Kyle Busch. Seems highly likely yes? I'd like to hear opinions on this to boost my confidence.
Dodge has that problem with the nose. One hot dog wrapper on the front bumper and the car explodes. No good. But I like Ryan Newman a lot- I'm always happy when he does well.

Well, young Kyle came on big time last year and I fully expect him to continue his rise. Remember, his owner brought Gordon up and helped make him a star. I think KB has the nerves and skill to stay up. Jr. is one of the best and now that he has his crew chief back he should get back to where he was before the plunge, but talk is easy. KB vs DE Jr. just on the drivers I would take Jr. DEI vs Evernham Racing DEI has the history but Ever. is very good. We'll have to wait and see the outcome. Keep on countin'.

Might be seeing some good things from Dodge this year. Some big changes at Petty Enterprises, for example. And of course Kurt Busch's taking over of the #2 car...I'm gonna say Dodge's best bets this year will be Newman, Kahne or Busch. Jamie McMurray just keeps falling short year after year- not sure what's up with that.........this is all IMHO of course. :)

Mikey got a ride with Bill Davis Racing and NAPA pulled out of their deal with DEI to follow him- a major sponsor for a small team like BDR. So Mikey will be in a Dodge rather than a Chevy and I'd guess if he does well he might be in the Top 20. BDR runs Toyota Tundras in the Craftsman Truck Series and Mikey will likely be one of the first cup drivers to sit in a Toyota when they introduce their Cup cars in 2007.
No matter who he races for or what he drives, you gotta love Mikey, el presidente de Nascar :bouncybou

Darrell owns a CTS team that runs Toyota Tundras. He doesn't drive anymore. I think David Reutimann drove for him last year. I don't know a whole lot about the truck series. I do know Darrell was going to run one race, but he failed to qualify (D'OH!)
I don't think anyone can replace JR in the NAPA commercials. I think Mikey is the tv talent anyway. Guys like Michael Waltrip and Kenny Wallace aren't great drivers and sit in their brothers' shadows, but they are excellent spokesmen for their sponsors. They're both such nuts and the fans love them.

Pokey, you might want to head over to Nascar.com and check the lead article before they change it. All about Michael's new racing team and the future of Toyota in the Cup Series, if you're interested.
I'd also recommend Frontstretch.com for anyone interested in a good but not terribly time consuming Nascar place.

I did review the Nascar.com site and got the MW article. I will be watching how Mikey does heading a team next year and especially how Toyota is received by the rest of Nascar. I haven't been to fronstretch yet but I will tonight.

Dear goofball Pokey pointed out something cool on Frontstretch that I thought I'd share with all 6 Nascar fans here :)
Here is the link to the article: http://www.frontstretch.com/mneff/1933/
Basically, a group of racing fans are looking to purchase the North Wilkesboro track to save it from anonymity and destruction. It seems like a fun and cool thing to be involved in, if, as Pokey points out, it's legit.

Agreed. Reed Sorenson is so far proving himself a class act. Nice to see in the younger set. Bet he'd rather be somewhere other than Ganassi though.

I remember that those that had Kentucky Speedway built really had had some indication that they could get a race there. When it didn't happen they took the legal route, and I agree, LK that it will be interesting. I drove by there a year or so ago on my way to Evansville and it is really a pretty setting and facility.
Mikey and DW together could be really good. they really care about each other but like most siblings sometimes too close is not as good. Will be very fun two watch. I think LK as the "Queen of Nascar" (the resident twer) should be allowed to ride in the 500 pace car. Thoughts?

20 days, 11 hours and 55 minutes.
So I watched the Dale Jr 60 minutes episode again last night. He's not my favorite driver, but he sure does have a lot of class. And humor.
To wit:
60 minutes: What about dating?
Jr: What about it?
60 minutes: Tell us about how you handle that.
Jr: Well I ain't no good at it.
I know it sounds rednecky, but it was actually quite charming. Of course later he said his relationships never work out because the women always end up wanting to be in charge and HE'S IN CHARGE, end of discussion. Poor, disillusioned boy. :sowrong:
As for the infield party, I'm up for it. TMF play or no, one of my dreams is to take an RV to a big race. I think the Charlotte races...The Coca Cola 600 and the All Star race. Spend the week between doing all the cool stuff downtown Charlotte has to offer during speed week, including partying in the infield. I'll not be picky though, any RV and any race will suit me fine.
PokeyinMich
01-31-2006, 06:40 AM
Well, I tell you right now, by experience, I have found that men can easily be in charge. Only problem is they are usually by themselves with no one to be in charge of. Jr. will learn. I am the President in my house and your can confirm that by talking with my CEO (that would be my wife).
The Charlotte experience would really be a fun week, or of course Daytona week. Either one. I know there is reportedly the biggest Harley store in the country that is new in Daytona. I could spend some a lot of time and money there. Less than 3 weeks.

Despite your use of the words "Powder Puff," I'll be polite and answer this instead of getting on a rant. (Cause I know deep down inside you're a good guy ;) )
I'd be driving a Chevy Monte Carlo, I do believe, if Tony will loan me his!
My last trip to Vegas, I spent approximately12 hours at the Nascar Experience and Cafe at the Sahara. They have 8 sim cars there and you can race against other folks. It's virtual- you have a big screen in front of your car showing the track and other cars and a smaller one in the car that shows your rearview. I must have raced 5 or 6 times in a row (lucky it was a slow night there). My best finish was second, but I led every lap in that race until somebody put me in the wall on the last lap. My goodness did I rant about that. I think maybe my friends were getting sick of hearing it :D (My friends waited at the bar while I indulged my childish fantasies in the cars.)
MAN that was fun!
Sadly I can't make the race but am willing to send a couple of bucks for gas and refreshments. :bunny:

Maybe we should start bet on when Mr. Excitement gets into his first scrap (either vehicle or with fisticuffs) this year. #26 Jamie McMurray will also come to the top 10 with Rousch this year.
And what is Mr. Excitement doing this year besides gardening and yammering? Trucks again? I have to admit I don't know- and his website hasn't been updated in months apparently.

Just hope I get to watch it. Right now I'm working on NYQUIL and Marlboros and It feels like my last joint twenty-three years ago. I'm getting a flashback of needing a bag of oreo cookies and a gallon of milk. I am enjoying this.
For my part, I spent last night in the emergency room but things are looking up now and I will be in bed all day watching the joyful Nascar coverage. I was in bed all day yesterday watching it too. Nothing better than watching it rain on Daytona....

Denny Hamlin stole the show. Of course the help from Stewart was what eventually was the difference and isn't it nice to see Tony Stewart successful and nice at the same time. Mark was 7th and Jr. (for the Queen) was second but looks really good for The Race. Sure was fun to watch.
And on the Queens behalf 6 days 6 hours and 12 minutes

yep Mark Martin was 7th. Hamlin is a rookie and he drives fro Joe Gibbs Racing the same as Tony Stewart and teh 18 car, which is a new driver this year and I don't remember who. It was a really good race, which leads me to believe next Sunday should be a good one, at least as good as restrictor races can be. :wavingguy

So pleased to see the post moving along while I sleep my life away! Thanks, friends. :) I'm doing much better now, no worries.
I was also pleased to see my man Tony pushing Denny to the victory. A very classy move, that was.
And also pleased to see Jr doing so well- bodes well for the 500. Remember though, that he only needs to beat Kyle Busch for me to win my bet. All in all, I'll be rooting for the #20 car as usual.
Carl Edwards got screwed on that below the yellow call didn't he? Utter nonsense! He was avoiding a wreck. Perhaps the boys in the Nascar trailer think wrecks sell more tickets? Grrrr.....
Anyone going to watch the new show on Speed tonight hosted by JR? Looks good....
PokeyinMich
02-13-2006, 05:23 PM
I am going to try and watch the show, if I can remember. Yea, Edwards really got messed over there. He actually lost a couple of spots and avoided a wreck by his choice. Terrific driving by any reasonable account.
And Tony absolutely showed a good side. 2/3 years ago I told someone that I could really pull for #20 if wasn't such an anger problem and trouble maker. Well, he has actually perfomed a 180 with that and that isn't easy to do with that particular problem. It will be an ongoing work for him but for now, I tip my hat to him.
And best of all, you are back. Izabeau has been her great self and we have managed to talk a little, but when a member of the family is absent, we tend to miss them. :dogpile: Glad you are better..........

Tony is so THE MAN! Driving Kevin Harvick's Busch car, I believe. When he was interviewed prior to the race yesterday he said, "I'm just gonna get in it and hold it wide open all the way around."

Tomorrow, though, I go nowhere. I have already laid in my supplies and warned anyone who isn't coming here to watch to not call or text message me or do anything til it's over! This is not including those friends I have throughout the country with whom I will be in IM contact during the race, of course. Probably 6/8 crashes, didn't count. They really didn't have "the big one" like they normally do at each Restrictor Plate race. Early on Carl Edwards 99 and a couple others went out but acutally a pretty tame race in terms of crashes. At least IMHO.
Very tame. Not at all like a usual restrictor plate race. And I'm not even sure there were as many as Pokey says. I don't like the sight of twisted sheet metal, so I was very pleased.

Now, is that what you thought when the 24 car went into the wall with the 20 car? Just curious. Anyway, we got a California race up and coming and the feel good story, Kirk Shelerding, or something like that, made around $272,000 and can hopefully get out of debt and race again.

Well, I was hoping for a Jr. win but top 10, considering he was fighting a push all race, isn't too bad.
Tony has nerve to talk about people bumping and to do what he did was way out of control. If... IF someone rode him into the wall or spun him then bumping someone to get back is one thing but to ride someone all the way down to the grass, with the entire field behind them, was dangerous. That was the equivalent of a three lane change on a highway! I thought he grew up a bit, but I guess not.
I'm glad there wasn't a major pileup. I'm still on the fence with plate racing. I understand speeds could possibly get ridiculous but the entire field was bunched together for most of the race. It's like watching IROC.
On a down note, not that there is anything left to being "stock" on the cars, I heard that all the front ends will be the same in the years to come, to even things out even further. Sad.

I'm kind of hoping the "car of tomorrow" will bring back the days of decent side by side racing. We might see an improvement on the plate tracks too, since it's supposed to be less aerodynamic. I don't have a lot of info though- I'm just spewing the hype Nascar is feeding me.

From what I heard, they are suppose to be block like. Almost like the regular PC world, they can't handle the complaints every year from the manufacturers about the other teams having an advantage. I dream of days like the 70's...when I was really, really young ;) I guess too much money is invovled to have only 10 cars or less on the lead lap, every race.

While "creative engineering" has been a long standing tradition in Nascar, does Knaus go too far or does he get a bum rap because he's with Hendrick?

I know rule bending has been around forever in NASCAR but any kind of bending or flat out cheating should be treated hard handed. Any car found not to be within specs should be taken out of competition and a backup car should be brought in. As I mentioned in an earlier post, NASCAR has been modifying the cars to make everything even, so how can any alteration be considered even? Putting someone at the back of the field doesn't do too much to deter them, if you have a good car. They need to take serious points off the team, in order to scare them into not taking risks. This will also cut out the thoughts of who may be getting away with rule bending and who feels they are in the middle of a witch hunt.

I think the penalty was applicable to the incident. I think we all agree that something needs to be done to allow cars to race and be able to pass. There is always weaker cars and stronger ones and the attempts to make them even just don't bode well for the sport. They wanted to talk so much about bump drafting and aggressive driving but then put restrictor plates on the vehicles to make them all go the same speed (185 +-) for 500 miles 3 wide part of the time. The only option they have is to Bristol thier way around someone.
I wouldn't have much problem if they went back to making them drive the vehicles off the showroom floor the way they used to. Allow them to make them safe as possible and soup up as much as they can without changing the factory equipment and line up and race. Probably way too much going backwards but I would like to see something change.
I think they are talking about putting small plastic tubes in the front bomper to cut down on the bumping, but that is just a product of the plate race, IMHO. Knaus is really very good at performing on the edge of legal, and obviously getting caught some. I imagine they all do it to an extent.
Hm. Thanks for the responses. Not really what I expected. I like what Pokey says about going back to showroom cars. Never gonna happen of course, but a nice thought (more mods for safety though please.)
Before the 500, there was a show on Speed. Dave Despain on Assigment. He's replaced Allen Bestwick on Inside Nextel Cup and has always hosted the Windtunnel. ANYWAY...he went back and documented the beginnings of racing at Daytona (like on the sand, not the track). And as you were seeing footage of these big blocky cars going around a dirt track, he talked about how some driver modified the fuel line somehow..can't remember the details.. but the point was Dave said this was the beginning of another tradition in stock car racing- cheating.
I was chatting with slacker about how Nascar and its drivers are getting so far away from the roots. It bugs me a lot, but of course is a necessary thing in order for the sport to grow. Personally I liked it better when NOT so many people liked it.
I'm no fan of Chad Knaus, JJ, or anyone else with Hendrick, but with Nascar jamming these cars so close together, I just wonder if the creative engineering should be embraced by the fans as something to differentiate while recognizing the tradition of it all? Remember folks, stock car racing came about from moonshiners souping up their cars to outrun the law. Our tradition is in disreputable behavior.
PokeyinMich
02-25-2006, 12:33 AM
I actually watched the Dave Despain throwback show as well, really interesting to me. I'm pretty sure we are going to have to accept the fact that all teams are going to do whatever it takes to be fast and win a race. The sponsors almost demand that their rides complete and when the money is that huge then, I guess I would do whatever I could as well. I would love to see racing as it was, but it is as it is now. Actually, it is very interesting now, we really don't know who is going to win from week to week. The bad part is the single teams are having a hard time competing with the multiple teams because of the ability to test more and the big teams obviously have more resources. Still, we have a race Sunday at 3:30 PM and as soon as I get back from the bike swap show at the Michigan State fairgrounds I'll be watching.

And she is damn good lookin' and very attentive to we strangers. She has a lovely voice that reminds me of lk70. :p :dogpile:

He sent it twice because the first one looks like a bad Klingon translation! What did you guys drink anyway?
And you didn't tell me JR was gonna be there! For him, I would have shown up. :woot:

I'm feeling a little slow this morning and please type softer. Lk...all I remember is it was light when we started boozing and dark when we left. That is a great place to relax and the skimpy costume on the waitress was not bad either. And we didn't talk about you until after you crashed the party, then we had real fun. :jester: :bouncybou :bouncybou :p Anybody want this autograph of Dale Jr? He writes real crappy when he's drunk.

I'm pretty sure that was Dale Jr. but I really didn't remember him having long blonde hair? You know, LK can be proud, the 20 car wasn't anywhere in site?

I got an idea. Next time you have to be in the area swing past Lk's house and bring her over with you. We can never have enough help when we are getting liquored up. :dogpile: And she probably will drink us under the table.

:xpeepsofa Now we done it Kered, we got both the royalty upset. I nkew we shouldn't have tipped the Dale Earnhart Jr. <------(staying on topic) look alike. But my oh my, that tea was really good.
Here Izzy, for you: http://www.kroger.com/kitchenhelp_bakery.asp?fileId=nascar
As for why Casey Mears is second- he was second at Daytona while Kenseth was only 15th. And then he got 7th to Kenseth's 1st at Fontana. That adds up to more points. Just goes to show you don't have to win races to win the championship.
