Lately I have seen a lot of videos where "hard/rough" tickling is used, eg digging in, grabbing someones foot with one hand and pressing/scraping with the other, kneading the ribs, tickling very hard and pressing etc.. personally I don't think tickling is about this. To me, tickling is about using soft techniques, fast or slow. Softly tickling the ribs very fast, lightly tickling the feet, etc.. I know some say it is best to alternate between hard/soft but to me it seems that being tickled very hard would hurt. Sure it may make you laugh a bit, but deep down it would probably hurt a lot more and thats not what tickling is about to me.
Can anyone see where I"m coming from?

I can definitely see where you're coming from, Mike, but I'd like to suggest that what's important is where the 'lee is coming from.
Different 'lees like different types of tickling. Some enjoy a very light touch, others like it rougher. As a 'ler my interest is the 'lee's reaction. I want to take my partner out of herself for a while. The techniquw is secondary to that, for me - I'll happily use whatever gets me and my 'lee where we both want to go.

I'd think it all depends on 'lee, the part of the body being tickled, and how long the tickling has already gone on. Yes, it can hurt like the dickens to have fingers digging into ribs, but a rougher touch on the feet might just make the feelings more intense.
Exploration and testing is always a good thing before getting down to business and during as well.
