Just wondering. I wear orange because my Mom's family is Protestant Irish. Only catholics wear green. Does anyone else do this?

I never heard of that, and I'm a green.

You wear orange almost in protest (sometimes). I wear it to show that not all Irishmen are catholic.

My advice to you, Aachen, would be to not show up for the St. Patrick's Day parade in New York, if you ever had notions of attending. If you did, at the end of the day, they'd probably find your head stuffed into a trash can around near Grand Army Plaza.

It really means that much.

Green is the color of Catholic Irish because yes, the nation is very green. Orange comes from when William of Orange (protestant), defeated a catholic king at the battle of the boyne. I can't remember the catholic king's name but I think it was either Charles or James. The Irish flag represents the catholics (green), orange (protestant), and white (the divide between the two).

I stand corrected. The catholic king was Charles, also known as the Bonnie Prince Charlie. Oh, and if anyone gives you guff for wearing orange on st.pattie's day, make sure they know that drinking on that day is the sign of ULTIMATE disrespect. Only protestants drink on that day in Ireland and Ulster (Northern Ireland).

One of our craziest couple friends is a guy from Aussie~she's irish~they're hilarious. She's like, "You yanks~you'd NEVER see any of this St Pattrick's shit up in stores in Ireland!" Apparently they don't decorate for the event. :manicd:
XOXO

Don't get me wrong; I'm a Jew, and completely neutral in this matter, but in the Brooklyn neighborhoods where I grew up, wearing orange on St. Patty's day was considered a form of suicide. A very messy, painful form of suicide.
One year, I took a St. Patty's day bouncer gig at a bar in Manhattan called Dorrian's Red Hand. BIG mistake! I found out the hard way that the Red Hand was the emblem of Ulster, the Protestant North of Ireland, and that Dorrian was it's ancient, mythic hero. That bar was a freakin' war zone that night! Sheesh!

Yes, the red hand is the symbol of holy Ulster. Don't get me wrong, I'm also Jewish, my Mom's family isn't. Mastertank, spielzt yiddish?
