Congrats to Jeff Burton. His win was well deserved and loooong overdue. And as for talks about seeing the black #3 out on the track again....I dunno how I feel about that. I don't think anyone should be able to use that number ever again except for perhaps Dale Jr. It would be very odd to see it at first, but I think eventually most fans would be very happy to see the #3 cruising around the track again....but I wonder, how does Dale Jr really feel about that?

Word is it will be black and red and carry Budweiser as the sponsor. Harvick would stay in the black Goodwrench Chevy. So not as spooky as it would first seem. I imagine Dale Jr feels just fine about it. I imagine he'd see it as honoring his daddy. He's never been spooky about his dad's death really. Daytona is his favorite track even though his dad died there. He had no trouble running the black paint scheme on his number 8 on father's day this year. Now THAT was spooky.

I'm torn on resurrecting the 3. Big E was my favorite driver and it seems like the number 3 should always mean Big E. But I'm not sure Nascar should retire numbers. It's up to RCR anyway- they paid to register that number and they've continued to hold it all this time.

My pennies worth here. I actually would like to see the 3 turning left again. I understand the sentiment of his fans, but I can't imagine any better testament than to see his number driven as an active racer. I will ask what you think Earnhart would have thought about retiring that number? I agree LK seeing the black 8 was different but I did like it. I don't think theresa was in agreement to anyone including Jr using the number. I do think it would be sad to see it not running up in the top group. It was kind of sad when Big E didn't do wo well, back when he was racing. Oh well. No change necessary.

i think earnhardt jr. is making a name for himself in the 8. i think it would be great for jr to be in the 3, but i think people will easily remember him as the driver of the #8 budweiser chevy under DEI. that's just the way i see it.

It's not up to Theresa. RCR owns that number, not DEI. And JR and Theresa haven't really ever seen eye to eye, which is why I imagine he'd be happier at RCR. Remember Dale Sr never raced for DEI either, he owned it. Just like Kevin Harvick owns his own race team, but races for RCR.

I think SR would be pleased to see JR with RCR and in the 3.

i did hear about that, and it wouldn't suprise me if more teams have more companions to help out other teams in nextel cup. oh, did everyone hear also about mark martin leaving roush? it might be sad, but i think he did what he needed to do. he is driving for mb2 motorsports for 22 races next season.

slacker2114

No, he wasn't hurt. And on top of that, he was a class act about the whole thing. He's getting so much like his dad.

MAN, I wish I could've heard what Mark was saying after he got wrecked! I was in a bar and couldn't hear it but he looked PISSED.

And poor Jeffy blew his motor....BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA lk70 said the only thing that would've made it better was if when he blew it, he would've taken Jimmy Johnson with him, and I totally agree.

Lots of cautions in both the Busch and Cup race this weekend. The Busch race also had three red flags and went 204 laps. It was really wacky too- all sorts of things needing to be reviewed by Nascar while the cars just sat on the track and waited.

I didn't get to watch the Cup race as closely due to some happy distractions but I think I could have my back to a tv and still sense when there's smoke coming from Gordon's car. It's like this warm fuzzy feeling that creeps over me....ok I'll stop. But slacker quotes me correctly- someday I hope to see the 24 and 48 take each other out and I'll be one happy camper.

Oh and Izzy- be happy you didn't see Mark's crash. It was a DOOZY. He hit the wall so hard the car went airborn for just a little bit. A really hard hit.

I'm predicting Burton for the championship. I know- big leap isn't it?

Funny you should say that because I distinctly remember I wasn't even looking at the tv and suddenly I turned my head and saw that smoke coming from his car. It really WAS a warm fuzzy feeling to see that. Luckily, I didn't get to hear his whining about it afterwards.

And you're right izzy, DJ did look mad. I've seen it happen a few times before, but usually he's pretty funny when he gets mad. Didn't get to hear his comments either. But considering where i was at the time, I'll take the lack of sound any day.

Update: I just read about Mark's interview on nascar.com. I agree with the reporters...he should get checked for head injuries. Here I thought he was mad and instead he was smiling and saying the Cup just wasn't meant for him and talking about how much fun he was having. Damn, that hurts that he got pushed away from a championship yet again. I need a hug. :(

man, so negative to mark? he isn't out of it quite yet. anything can happen in those next 5 races and if jeff burton and matt kenseth have a bad race, mark is back in it. as for jeff gordon and hendrick motorsports, jeff is just having bad luck, and so is jimmie johnson. everyone hates them so much, but i mean, jimmie has ran well not to win a championship and other than martin is the best driver not to win one. but oh well.

but i hope jeff burton gets it over matt kenseth. just my take.

I believe that Jeff Gordon earned every little bit of disdain people have for him. He's a damn good driver but that whiny little voice is like nails on a chalk board and his latest comments about JR probably even made some of his die hard fans cringe. Jimmie...well that's partially a case of guilt by association I suspect. Jeff Gordon was his mentor and Jimmie just soaked up it too well.

Ever since Knaus got suspended this year, though, I think Jimmie matured a bit. He doesn't bug me as much as he used to or nearly as much as Gordon does, but as a GREAT MAN once said "there'd be nothing better than to see the two of them lock bumpers and hit the wall together." (paraphrase)

I remember that quote, though I think there was more to it. :D And that staement still holds true.

And yes, I realize Mark isn't out of it yet. Believe me, I've been a Mark Martin fan for many years. Very little would make me happier than to see him win it. I'm not just pulling for him to win, I'm pulling for others to badly screw up so he can win. And I'll NEVER stop pulling for whiny 24 to kiss the wall each and every race. Not to see him hurt. Just to see him OUT of the race.

3. #20 Tony the Tiger (or so LK says)

What do you think, before qualifying?

What is this? No one here celebrating Tony's win? Not only did Tony win the cup race, but he also won the IROC Championship on Saturday. jd58 tells me he's also secured the million dollars for 11th place this weekend as well. I'm not sure how much he won for the Cup race, but the IROC Championship pays $1 million and 11th pays $1 million. Not bad for a fat boy.

But WAIT there's more good news! Had the joy of watching the episode of Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain that featured Jeff Gordon. A fan (a 24 fan I might add) wrote in to tell Jeff to stop whining so much. So Despain says "what do you say Jeff? Are you a whiner?" And Jeff says (verbatim in that whiny voice of his),

"I agree. I am. I whine too much sometimes."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Gee, ya think? Snort.

But wait, there's more. Most of you don't know this, but I'm not fan of Robbie Gordon either- another whiny b*stard. Nascar is currently investigating the driver of the Harrah's no. 7 car to determine if he intentionally threw roll bar padding out of his car to bring out the caution with 35 to go. If so, he screwed Jeff Burton royally but won himself the lucky dog and eventually a no. 10 finish. I watched the video and it sure looks mighty suspicious.

A fabulous weekend all the way around, despite my being hideously ill and sleeping much of it away.

I checked my old posts at the beginning of the season and I predicted JJ for the championship. I hope I don't have some special powers I don't know about and caused this to happen.

It is important to note though, that it's by no means a shoo-in. He could still lose. And that would please me. But really, I've said it several times and I still feel the same way. I don't hate Johnson like I used to. I still hate Chad Knaus though and as long as he and Johnson are a team, Johnson is out of luck.

Just being silly Isabeau. I drove down to Wilmington NC and everytime I stopped to get gas at a Shell station they have a big sign up saying that they are proud to be back into the Nascar scene as they are now sponsoring the number 29 (Kevin Harvick) car. The other part was I had not posted anything about Nascar so I posted that just to say anything about Nascar. Me, being silly in the wrong section, lol.

am i going to be the only JG fan on hear again this year? i feel kind of abused. anyway jr. wants part ownership in DEI and i think he should have it.
tony won the chili bowl miget race over this last weekend and jj yeley was 2nd.

my prayers go out to the families of bobby and benny!

I concur with the prayers for those families and I understand Jr. wanting a part of the ownership, but either way, he might want to drive for a different group anyway. Be better for him and DEI, I think. And, I am not a jg fan either. But sure glad you are on here and talking.

LK, I like JJ, but that pic is still funny, lol! ;)

And as far as Toyota entering the Nascar picture, I'm not sure how I feel about that yet. Ask me that question again at the end of the season.

Oh, BTW, did anyone catch any of the Rolex 24 hrs at Daytona? Gordon's team finished 3rd (his first time in this race, by the way ;) )...umm Jimmie Johnson's team was 36th and Tony Stewart's team came in 48th. Just thought I'd throw that little tidbit of info out there. :xpeepsofa :p

I even see Jeff being in the top 5. Smoke, may beat him but its all cool..as long as team monte carlo wins i am happy...since i am a member of team monte carlo myself! haha

MissLaffs- yes I watched a lot of the Rolex. I was hoping it would be Tony's year, but it was clear early on that it was not to be. I enjoyed the race though.

Izzy- I'm not happy about Toyota entering the field. American car manufacturers are not in good shape and I don't believe Nascar should be supporting foreign manufacturers. On the other hand, they already had Toyotas in trucks and there are various arguments to be made about where all of the cars are actually made and really wouldn't it lovely if the whole world were unified and blah blah blah. Jack Roush actually sold half interest in his racing team in order to raise money to beat Toyota. He hates them.

navel- I'm actually heading down that way in March. So far I plan to visit DEI and Kannapolis. I'm really not a Hendrick fan so I'm not planning to hit that shop. Can't be much better than DEI can it? I figured that all the race shops were probably the same, except for the museum value of DEI. Come to think of it though, I bet RCR has some stuff too. Have to look into that.

1- it's going to be between JG and tony with JG winning the 500 AGAIN!

2-i think jr. going to stuggle a little this race.

3- jeff Burton will run better than K.Harvick.

4- the toyota guys will show a little but will not be a contender.

5-Bobby Labonte- will have a good run and maybe an upset win.( wouldn't it be good to see the 43 back in victory lane at Daytona for some of us old dogs that remember when.)

6- 72 year old James Hylton will not make the race.

7- LK will not be rooting for JG to win.

8- izzy will be cheering for Ward Burton to win. if he makes the race.

I am actually glad to see toyota in the mix. It is often a good thing to stir up the good'ole boys and make them renew their efforts (Rousch as an example). Look what has happend to Petty Enterprises after the King quit and they didn't pursue the same excellence apparently. Besides, I have a couple of friends from Georgetown, Ky. (home of a Toyota Plant) that would argue that they are American made. If we could eliminate all parts, technology, and sponsorship to just "American" made we would not have anywhere near the spectacle that we how have with Nascar, IMHO. OK, LK, I am braced and ready for you to unload. Good to see you back and loaded for Gasoline Alley. :veryhappy

Here is where it will likely be televised:

28. FOX, SPEED's 12 days of coverage at Daytona (January 31, 2007)

Prior to live, exclusive coverage of the Daytona 500 on Feb. 18 (2 p.m. ET), FOX Sports launches its 2007 NASCAR on FOX season under the lights of Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 10 with a prime-time presentation of The Budweiser Shootout (8 p.m. ET).

I am guessing that qualifying will be on Sat. 2/10 or Sun. 2/11 on Fox but can't find it yet. Maybe after work I'll look more. Jim

i have to agree. it would be nice to see the 43 back in victory lane and kurt busch can't hold a candle to what rusty did in that #2.

if history repeats itself the lose of a crew chief won't matter much for the 500. these teams have so many good people that can step in.
jimmie J. proved that last year.
it sounds like M. Waltrip might have bigger trouble. nascar really frowns on messing with the engines.

I think that is not the last time you will see RCR, in particular the 29 car in the winners circle in the Big show this year. Hated to see Mark Martin not get the win but, racing is racing, I suppose.

I think his not winning this race is the same reason he hasn't won it before and hasn't won a Championship. I don't think the man truly has the fighting spirit. He said when the wrecking started, he figured they'd throw the yellow. Harvick, on the other hand, kept racing as hard as he could regardless.

I do love it when a car crosses the finish line on its roof.

LK, there is no doubt he Martin should have put a wheel into the 29 or something but I suppose that is not his nature. I know he lost again this week but more reasonably, lol.

I sure was hoping for another photo finish between the 17 and the 29 but the mystery tire slasher kind of cut into the fun. Two weeks, two sweeps. If Tony doesn't speed thru the pits maybe he will be the next at Vegas.

I enjoyed this race pretty good Sunday. bout time racing is back. :couch:

what happened to Mike??? other than the hit and run accident...is he out???

He hasn't qualified since Daytona. This past weekend they didn't have qualifying because of the tornados so he had to go home again. On top of that, Reutimann's car was really good and almost certainly would have qualified but he also had to go home because of the weather.

That was the first time I had ever watched the "go home" cars actually pack up and leave the race track at the same time I did.

What a blast!

I arrived at the track Friday morning around 10:30 where I was given my credentials and then a tour of the track and grounds. Then I talked some business with the sales manager for awhile then I was on my own with VIP access.

I walked around the vendor area taking pictures of people and their dogs. Then I watched Cup practice from my suite. I hung out in the suite hopeful that qualifying would go off and even more hopeful that they'd show the Dale movie, which they were scheduled to do at 8pm. But the tornadoes came and they made us move into the stairwells til it was over. Then I drove back to my friend's place for the night.

I went in again Saturday morning and watched practice and met some nice guys from Corpus Christi who were also in my suite. We ate and drank and goofed around and watched the Busch race. Then I went back to my friend's and she and I went out.

Sunday morning it took me 2 hours to drive the 24 miles to the track thanks to all the insane traffic. When I got there, I went down to the pits with my VIP pass and got pics of JR and Tony's pit stalls, then they pushed the 43 car right by me and I got pics of that. Then I went back to the suite and partied with my new friends while we watched the race. When Montoya wrecked Tony I leapt out of my chair and banged the glass of the suite. One of my new pals said "Settle down Trigger- someone get her another drink." The race had a great finish even though Tony didn't finish well and the 8 didn't finish at all. We hung out in the suite til they kicked us out, then my new friends drove me to my car which took about an hour thanks to the traffic. Then I went and picked up my friend and went to the hotel where my new friends were, ate and played pool til about midnight.

Then today, after hours of delayed flights, I finally made it home. What a ROCKIN' weekend!

So what do you think of Junior finishing the race in Kyle Busch's car (#5)?

All in all, I don't think it's a big deal. Kyle left the track and they needed someone to drive the car. Jr was available and he's a good guy so he did it. All this talk about it being an "audition" for HMS or a way for him to test their engines sounds like Kennedy conspiracy theory to me.

Of course if he did learn something useful about the car or the engine, then peachy for him.

I heard it. I'm somewhat torn between thinking it was typical Tony in a snit over some obnoxious fans and thinking that you're right about him being happier in a dirt car. tony did not just come up with the phantom caution thing and he's not the only driver talking about it. it's talked about almost weekly on wind tunnel.
has nascar ever come out with a statement saying that there is no fake cautions? or did i just miss it?
nascar needs tony more than tony needs nascar. there is no other driver right now that has the personality and will speak what he really thinks know matter if it make nascar mad or not. that's a good thing!

So, the report is that Dale Jr may NOT drive for DEI next year and he may drie for his own team: JR Motorsports. There is a press conference tomorrow (May 10th) at 11am ET on SPEED

http://www.nascar.com/2007/news/headlines/cup/05/09/dearnhardtjr.mtruex.leaving.DEI/index.html

TiCKleMaN87

ANd it's official, Dale Earnhardt Jr, will not return to DEI in 2008. HE doesn't know who he will drive for next year.

lk70
05-10-2007, 09:07 PM
I knew it was coming and yet it's so very sad.

He said he'll drive for Chevy so that means Hendrick (who doesn't have a ride open), RCR, or Gibbs.

He said he never wants to change teams again so that would lead one to believe he might head over to RCR since he's said that he might like to run the 3 towards the end of his career.

On the other hand, he's also said that he doesn't want to run in his Daddy's shadow any longer and the Universe knows he'll be in Daddy's shadow big time at RCR. Furthermore, he and Tony Stewart are known buds and damn fine partners on restrictor plate tracks. Denny Hamlin is one of Jr's proteges. Gibbs has a ride open and seems like a real nice fit. And it's not just because I want to see my two favorite drivers on the same team.

This is just so big. What he must be going through right now is unimaginable. Leaving his daddy's company. I know he never thought he'd do it. Teresa is not, I think, taking DEI where Sr wanted it to go. JMHO.

Sad.

isabeau
05-11-2007, 07:31 AM
Theresa, in my humble opinion..is a major bitch...Dale Jr. belongs with that company...he shouldn't have had to leave..damn it is sad indeed..i mean the company bears his name..he is Dale Earnhardt now...ah welll business is a bitch...

lk70
05-11-2007, 03:15 PM
I'm revising my prediction. I just recently found out that JD Gibbs has a thing about alcohol sponsors so if Bud were to follow JR, Gibbs probably wouldn't want him.

It'll be RCR.

jd58
05-14-2007, 12:12 PM
here's my take
i don't think jr has left DEI for good. both Richard and kyle petty left petty enterpirse and came back.
budweiser has a contract with DEI though 08 and i've heard that vista might be interested in jr. if that's the case. i'm going to go with Gibbs over RCR.
also there's a new comer to nascar.(i can't think of his name right now) but he is interested also.
don't count out jr changing from chevy if the right deal comes.
Ray Everham is going to talk to jr too.

lk70
05-14-2007, 09:25 PM
One thing I'm SURE about is JR will not drive anything but a Chevy. I had heard about the VISA thing so, yes, if they come on board JR could end up at Gibbs. I hope that happens. The Bud contract through 2008 is with JR, not DEI, I believe.

The newcomer you're thinking of is, I think, Ginn Racing. That's who Mark Martin is driving for most of the time this year and they're running Hendrick engines and as we've seen, they're doing quite well. My brother thinks Ginn is a good contender.

I don't think he'll go back to DEI unless Teresa meets an untimely end - like if a house falls on her during a tornado :p

Meanwhile- Wednesday at 7pm on Speed- a special edition of Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain debating who's better? The Wonder Boy or The Intimidator? I can't believe they're scheduling 90 minutes for this. Clearly the Intimidator is da man, right Jeff?

Not even a snowball's chance in hell of JR going IRL. He hasn't got a clue how to drive an open wheel car and his fan base is in NASCAR. There isn't all that much crossover. IMHO - no way, no how.

However, that never is a lock for a win each week, especially with the new car becoming the only car next year. I think it will be very interesting going forward.

On a side note, LK, I was glad to see your Resident Ford cutie win at MIS. Mr. Edwards peformed his back flip flawlessly.

And didn't Kurt get what was coming to him after that jackass move in the pits?

He should have gotten more than that... how bout SUSPENDED.. for that asshole move... and the horror of him driving like that in Rusty's car... I bet old Penske is going "WTF have I done?" Tony just needs to kick the shit out of the little weasel and be done with it. period.

not that I have a HATE HATE problem with Kurt or anything... HELL YES I DO. lol

Why is it if your a Gordon fan you don't like Jr., and vice versa?

Because Jeff Gordon was the first driver to really challenge Dale Earnhardt. He was beginning to steal the limelight from SR and it's difficult to know what would have happened had SR not died, but the two of them were certainly two of the best racers.

Jeff Gordon represents the "new" NASCAR, a younger more worldly crowd, with fewer roots in the southern community.

Dale Earnhardt was "old" NASCAR, a product of generations of hardworking, moonshine running car guys who made NASCAR into a sport.

Most Dale SR fans became Dale JR fans, hence they hate Jeff Gordon. In reality, despite the on track rivalry, Dale SR and Gordon were friends and business partners.

Personally, I don't like Jeff Gordon because he's a whiner. If things don't go his way, he whines and makes a lot of noise about it.

Dale JR absolutely never does that. Never. He's a very mature driver who does a great job of shaking things off.

Enough info for you? :)

DEI can't sell the #8 to Hendrick because nascar owns, licenses and assigns the numbers to the teams.
Hendrick can only get the#8 with nascars approval.

Apparently DEI can sell the 8 to Hendrick. NASCAR just has to approve the transfer and they don't concern themselves with financial arrangements. So they say this week. Last week it was a different story. NASCAR can really be full of it sometimes.

According to the weather I am looking at outside there won't be a MIS today here in Michigan. Course I am 1.5 hours from MIS but I can't believe it will happen. MIS in November to decide the chase? nOVEMBER is not normally a great month to do things here. We'll see.
