NFL and drugs

Im not talking about steroids but rather recreational drugs. With the whole Ricky Williams drug saga getting headlines again made me think about the policy and the punishments that go along with it.

I dont take drugs and thats just my personal choice and I dont interfere with what others do. I dont think there should be punishments if players test positive out of season and by that I mean soon as mini camps start they have to be clean. If they test positive thats a whole different issue and should kicked out of the league.

I know the whole role model to children issue but why even make it public, its not like its any ones business what they do off the field and like how would you feel if your private matters (problems) were plastered of every news paper in the country.

This harsh (ridiculous) stand has cost the careers of two players who could of been great (or at least constant pro bowlers) in Q.C and now Ricky Williams.

I would love to hear other NFL and sport fans opinions on this.

There are a couple of different levels here, depending in part on the athlete's actions.

Right up front, I don't believe that recreational drug use should be illegal. as long as it is illegal though, I can't see any reason why pro sports should stooge for the government by testing athletes for recreational drugs. It just shouldn't be done.

An athlete's behavior is another matter though. If an athlete gets rowdy because he's drunk or high, or if he publicly extolls the virtues of drinking and snorting, then the league's interests are on the table due to the effect this can have on a team's public image.

Basically, the leagues have no buisness intruding on private behavior that doesn't affect an athlete's performance on the field. The do have a justified interest in how the athlete's public behavior affects them.

Im with German 100%. If a guy wants to do drugs and it doesnt affect his play leave him the fuck alone! It matters not his personal life. The ONLY reason drugs arent legal is because the scummy, contemptable US Government doesnt get a cut of the sales. Otherwise theyd be joints in McDonalds happy meals!:idontwann
