The Good Guys had a peaceful winter following their disappointing loss in the playoffs. Mitch and Naomi spent much of it quietly at home, preparing for, and awaiting the next season. When Spring Training arrived, Mitch was a bit more rested, and, as for any unhappiness, he attempted to approach that with a mindset that since this would be the last season, whatever negative feelings he was experiencing, would be tempered by the fact, that every day that clicked off the calendar that year, would be a day closer to retirement.
After a mediocre and lethargic spring training, the Good Guys opened the new season on a cool, cloudy, 70 degree afternoon against the Mets. Kate Hudson pitched six solid innings, allowing only one run. The game was tied, 1-1 in the eighth, when Mitch hit a homer, and Hilary Duff closed in fine fashion in the ninth, for a 2-1 opening day win. The buzz in the clubhouse that afternoon was great. Mitch had avoided the media all winter long, and took a "no comment" stance on whether this would really be the last season or not. That day, he was surrounded by the media, to discuss the game, and his home run. However, the talk quickly turned to his intentions, and this was his answer:" It is opening day. I am happy we came out with a win. I dont want to discuss any plans yet. This is one game, one of 162, we have 161 to go after today, and what happens after 162, and the playoffs, if we get there, will take care of itself." Mitch said. "Mitch, there were reports after last season, and during the winter, that you gave Naomi an ultimatium that if she did not retire after this year, you were going to leave her. It has also been reported that you really didnt want to play this year, and did so in deference to her, any comment?" One reporter said. "I really dont appreciate that line of questioning. Naomi is my wife, and my children's mother. I have been married to her for 22 years. I love her with all my heart. Why dont you stupid reporters stick to covering the game, and not to my personal life. I will not comment on what private conversations I had with her, or what was said, because, to be honest, it is not anyone's damn business. As to my plans, as I said, I have no comment" Mitch said again. After Mitch showered, and dressed, he went into the girls clubhouse to find Naomi:" Did you see that interview? Can you believe those fuckers? Like I'm really going to discuss what you and I talk about privately. Screw them all! If they piss me off enough, I fucking wont talk to them all season!" Mitch fumed. "Mitch, dont do this. I really dont want to start off this season on the wrong foot. We won today, let's be happy about that, and go off and enjoy our dinner with our teammates. To hell with what a bunch of stupid reporters think" Naomi said, kissing Mitch.
The Good Guys returned to the park the next afternoon, but that day, luck was not with them. Gil Bellows blew a 4-0 lead, and the Good Guy bullpen could not hold the Mets down, as the Paradise Islanders fell, 5-4, on another cool and cloudy day. Charlize Theron took her turn on Wednesday afternoon, and that day, a sunny, comfortable one, the team's luck returned, as Charlize pitched seven fine innings, and Mitch hit another homer, in a 3-0 triumph.
Thursday was an off day. Mitch and Naomi spent much of the morning in bed tickling, and making love, and then met up for lunch with the team at the casino.
Friday was the first night game of the season, against Atlanta. Neve Campbell took her turn that night, in a wild game. The Braves led 5-0 in the sixth, before Paradise came all the way back to tie the game. Atlanta went ahead in the eighth, the Good Guys rallied, took the lead in the eighth, blew it, and then finally, won the game in the bottom of the tenth, 8-7. The fifth starter got hammered on Saturday night, which was nothing new. Then. on a perfect, bright, 85 degree April day on Sunday , Kate Hudson opposed John Smoltz, in a marquee early season matchup. Both pitchers were on top of their game, with Smoltz pitching eight innings, allowing only one run, and Kate firing nine innings of one run ball. The game went to extra innings, where it was decided on a homerun by center fielder Ed Burns in the 11th, for a 2-1 Paradise win.
Houston came to town on Monday night, for the last part of the homestand, before the Paradise Islanders would go away for the first time that season. Gil Bellows pitched on that Monday night, and did a fine job, allowing one run in seven innings, as the Good Guys hit two homers, for a 4-1 win. Charlize Theron took her turn on Tuesday night. She pitched well, allowing only two earned runs in seven innings. Unfortunately, a costly error allowed an unearned run to score, and the Good Guys could not rally against the fine Houston bullpen, falling 3-2. Neve Campbell took the mound on Wednesday afternoon before a matinee sellout. This time, the pitched a fine game, allowing but one run in six innings. The Good Guys hit four solo homeruns that day, and let the bullpen do the rest, in a 4-1 Paradise triumph that completed a fine six and three homestand. All had gone well that week, except for the unfortunate incident with the Naomi retirement situation. Hopefully, that was just a blip that would go away. Also, as per usual, Spencer was back on Mitch's case for the beginning of the season. Mitch had been thrilled not to have to see him for six months, but now, he was back, and would be until Mitch offically retired.

That weekend, the cast of the hot new HBO show "Big Love" was in Paradise There was a huge gathering at the fetish club that night, and the common desire was to see one of the show's stars, the lovely Chloe Sevingy, tickled. Chloe, having done intimate scenes on the show, wanted to be accomadating, so she willingly stripped naked, and was tied to the fetish table with silk scarves. Catcher Barney began the tickle on Chloe's neck with fingers, as the giggles began, and her head shifted from side to side:HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE! NO! Then, second baseman Russell took over, tickling Chloe under her arms, and down her sides, ribs and belly with fingers, as more squeals erupted:HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEEHEHE! OMG THAT'S TICKLISH! NOOO! HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEEHEHE! Center Fielder Ed Burns was next, attacking Chloe's hips, inner thighs, and knees, causing her to buck. Then, for her feet, Chloe had two ticklers. Her male Co star, Bill Paxton, who played her husband in the show, positioned himself at one of Chloe's bare feet, while Mitch placed himself at the other bare foot. Then, at one time, both Mitch and Bill attacked Chloe's feet with their fingers, feathers, ice, and two vibrating electric massagers over, under, and inbetween Chloe's toes, and on her soles. Chloe went ballistic, wiggling her toes every which way, and screaming with hysterical laughter, begging for mercy:HHEHEHEHEEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE! OMG PLEASE NO MORE! IAM SO TICKLISH! I GIVE UP ALREADY! NO PLEASE NO MORE NO! HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE! Finally, the tickle stopped, and the exhausted, and somewhat irate, Chloe, was untied.
While it had been a successful first homestand on field, it was anything but off the field, with the retirement controversy caused by the media.
