The Good Guys embarked on their next road trip. It started well, with a three game sweep of the Pirates in Pittsburgh. They then went to Chicago, and lost two of three, and were swept a three game series in St Louis. The team returned home on a Sunday night, to begin a nine game homestand against the teams from California.
When Mitch got home on that Sunday night, things were unusually calm between him and Naomi. They made love, and it seemed that much of the drama was gone. Mitch was taking his medication, and talking to his therapist twice a week on the road. Now, back at home, he would attend regular marriage and individual sessions.
The next morning, an event occurred that would serve to turn the family's plans for the following year upside down. It was late morning, around 11 am, and Mitch and Naomi were relaxing, and mentally getting set for that night's game with the Giants. Suddenly, there was a ring from the downstairs doorman, saying that Federal Express was on their way up, with something very important. Mitch asked Naomi if she had ordered anything from perhaps a home shopping channel, and she shook her head no. When Mitch signed for the package, he found out it was actually two envelopes, one addressed to him, and one to Naomi. He opened his envelope, and handed Naomi's to her. Inside, there was a contract for the following season, with a $500,000 raise, and a $250,000 bonus check. Inside Naomi's envelope was a contract, with a $250,000 raise, and a $100,000 bonus check. There were also typewritten notes from Alan:" Your teammates and manager want you back, and the team needs you, please accept these as our way of saying we want you back. We would like you to sign and return them as soon as possible"
Mitch and Naomi were both dumbfounded, and called Alan at the team offices, arranging a lunch with him for that afternoon. When Alan arrived at the meeting, he was terse and to the point: "The team needs you, and your teammates want you back. I dont normally do this, but I didnt want to wait until the end of the season, in case you would decide to move, so basically, please sign them, so you can play next year" Alan said. "Alan, the offers were very generous, and we thank you, but we haven't decided if we want to play yet next year." Naomi began. "What's to decide? Can you both honestly say you are going to turn your backs on two and a half million dollars? I think Mitch's problem is this whole retirement thing. It can depress a person. He can still hit decently, he's shown that, and you are far from washed up, Naomi. Play another year, your teammates love you, Lee wants you back, and I want to make everyone happy." Alan said. "I want to get to the ballpark, and share this with the team. We'll give you the contracts back in 24 hours, okay?" Mitch said. "Yes, that's fine" Alan replied.
That night, when the team gathered at the ballpark, they were all over Mitch and Naomi. "Okay, basically, here is how it is. We all want you back, and if you dont come back, you are both suspended for tonight, and fined $1000 each, for breaking the hearts of your teammates and manager!" Sniderman said firmly. "Lee, that's blackmail!" Mitch said, an angry tone to his voice. "So, fuck it if it is! We need you both, I need you both. It isnt about the money, sign the damn contracts and play, goddamnit!" Sniderman snapped. "If you want us to leave the park now, then fine, we will, but we cant do anything until tomorrow morning. We want to discuss it with our kids first, Being grown adults, they have a right to be in on this decision with us" Mitch said. "Okay, but you better sign those contracts by tomorrow, or else!" Sniderman snapped.
The game that night was a tough one. Naomi later reported to Mitch that while sitting in the bullpen, all the relief pitchers were all over her to sign the agreement and return. In the meantime, on the field, Kate Hudson pitched two run ball into the eighth inning, and then, the bullpen sweated out the ninth, in a 3-2 win over the Giants. The next morning, when the family gathered for breakfast, the couple discussed the situation with their grown children. "I know we said we were going to retire, but this is a lot of money. As depressed as I've been, I am uncomfortable about leaving my teammates and friends." Mitch said. "What's in it for us?" Erin, the college age daughter said. "You get to stay with your friends, in a famiilar place, and ah, your mom and I were discussing what form of bribery we could lay on you all to convince you to stay" Mitch said. "Five thousand bucks and a new car" Erin answered. Mitch stared down his daughter:" Listen to you, greedy spoiled little bitch!" Mitch said, a bit annoyed. Then he looked at Naomi:" Nai, you're the parent too, and it's half your money, so, what do you say?" Mitch asked. "She's a bitch, but done" Naomi answered. "And, a trip with just us three siblings, over part of Erin's winter break, no parents, to an island of our choice, paid for by you and mom" The middle son said. "Okay, fine" Mitch said. "Also, $2500 each for us two others " The youngest one said. "Done, I'll write you the check" Mitch said. "Also, a party, here, just my friends, no parents" Erin said. "Dont push your luck, young lady, no to the party. I am not having dozens of college age kids trash my apartment!" Mitch snapped. After working the agreement with their offspring, Mitch and Naomi returned the contracts to the team, and got ready to play that night's game against the Giants. Gil Bellows was the starter, and he pitched well, firing one run ball over eight innings, in a 4-1 win. Charlize Theron pitched on Wednesday night, and she allowed but three runs, but, unfortunately, the Good Guys got only one, and fell, 3-1.
Thursday was an off day. Mitch and Naomi took some of their bonus money, and had a wild time at the casino, and a shopping spree, blowing off steam at the happiness of having the uncertain future settled for one more season.
San Diego came to town on Friday night. Neve Campbell fired a fine game, striking out thirteen, but an error, left her on the short end of a 2-1 score. The fifth starter pitched on Saturday night, as Sniderman juggled his lineup, to try and get some runs. It was a wild game, as the Good Guys hit five homeruns, the last, in the bottom of the ninth, at midnight, after a two hour rain delay, to win the game, 9-8. Kate Hudson took the mound on a dry, clear, hot, Sunday in front of a sellout. She pitched masterfully that day, striking out ten in seven innings. Kate left tied, 1-1 in the seventh. The Good Guys scored once in the seventh, and four more times in the eighth. Then, they had to hold their collective breath in the ninth, until the pen got out of the trouble, for a 6-3 triumph.
The Dodgers visited Paradise for the last series of the homestand, before the Good Guys went to the West Coast for ten days. Gil Bellows pitched on Monday night, but didnt get any runs, and dropped a 2-0 decision. Charlize was on the mound on Tuesday night,and the Good Guys scored five runs in the first inning, capped off by a Mitch Grand Slam homer. Five was just enough, as the Dodgers almost came back, and the Good Guys had to hang on, to prevail, 5-4. Neve Campbell took to the hill on a hazy, hot humid Wednesday in front of a near sellout. Neve pitched well, striking out six in eight innings. The team, in the meantime, scored four early runs on four solo homers in the first four innings. They didnt get any other runs after that, but didnt need to, as Neve combined with the bullpen, to come away with a 4-2 Paradise win that completed a six and three homestand. It had been an emotional, yet productive, homestand, with the contract situation, and now, with the couple signed for another year, the uncertainity was gone, and hopefully, baseball could just be played and focused on.
In the meantime, the team held it's weekly tickle party, which was changed to Sunday night that week, due to the midnight end time of the game that Saturday. The featured lee would be a beautiful 21 year old college student fan, who had won a lucky ticket contest, at the game earlier that week. The girl, who was very wild, agreed to be tied naked to the bed in the middle of the fetish club, with many of her sorority sisters, and other guys she knew, gathered around her. Third baseman Michael began the tickle on the girl's neck with fingers as her head moved from side to side, and the giggles began: HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEEHEHEHEHE! NO! Finally, Mitch capped the tickle by going after the blonde's baby soft soles. On Thursday night, as Naomi drove Mitch to the airport for the flight to San Fransisco, there was a calm in the air that had not been felt for a long time. Their situation was settled for one more year, and Mitch's mood, for the moment, was on a more even keel. What would happen next?
