The Good Guys embarked on their next road trip to California. They didnt fare well, going three and six on the trip, losing two of three games at all stops of a San Fransisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles trip. They returned home, on a Sunday night, to begin another nine game homestand.
When the Good Guys returned to Paradise, they were faced with a major problem. First, during the initial part of the road trip, in San Fransisco, Hilary Duff began to experience stiffness in her pitching shoulder, that at first was attributed to the cold weather. Her arm didnt feel any better when the Good Guys arrived in warmer weather in San Diego, and it was learned that she had tendonitis in her shoulder, and she was advised to shut down pitching for the year, a devastating blow. Then, if that wasn't bad enough, on the plane ride home from Los Angeles to Nassau, Amanda Bynes, who had been expected to be Duff's replacement as the closer for the rest of the season, also began having arm and shoulder problems, and she, too was advised to rest for the remainder of the season. Now, except for Naomi, the Good Guys had no closers, so, Lee Sniderman was in a huge mess. His options were not many, as the Good Guys had more road games left during the season, and Naomi's contract did not allow her to travel with the team. The Good Guys brass had a team meeting upon arrival in Nassau on Sunday night, and decided to make the following moves.
Down on the farm at Freeport, the Paradise Islanders had a very strong, five foot ten inch pitcher named Jacinda Barrett, an actress, and model, who had been launguishing in the Good Guy farm system for years. Jacinda was not young by baseball standards, at 34, but Sniderman knew that top Hall of Fame closers like John Smoltz of the Braves, and Dennis Eckersley of the A's had established great careers as closers in their 30s. So, the team decided to call Barrett up from the farm, and immediately install her in the closer's role, to replace Duff. For the setup person, an even more unorthodox move was made. Food guru Racheal Ray, a huge Good Guys fan, who had pitched on a girl's baseball team in college, heard of the team's plight, and called the team offices, offering to try out and audition for the Bynes eighth inning setup role. Late on Sunday night, when the team arrived home from California, Ray met with manager Lee Sniderman at the ballpark, and threw underground in the pitcher's tunnel for about an hour. Sniderman was satisfied with what he saw, and signed both Ray and Barrett to contracts for the rest of the regular season. They would both be in uniform for Monday's game against the Nationals.
On Monday night, the Good Guys opened their homestand against Washington, with Amanda Bynes and Hilary Duff disabled, and Racheal Ray and Jacinda Barrett in uniform. Kate Hudson was the starter, and pitched six strong innings, allowing only two runs. Kate had to depart early in that game, due to having thrown a lot of pitches. Naomi entered in the seventh, and pitched a scoreless inning, and then Rachael Ray got three ground balls in the eighth. In the ninth, with the Good Guys leading 5-2, the five foot ten inch Barrett made her debut. She threw a blazing fastball, and a very heavy sinker. She walked the first batter she faced, and then got a pop up, and two strikeouts, for her first save in a Good Guy uniform. After the ballgame, the media discussed the situation with Good Guy manager Sniderman:" As we did a few years ago when Naomi and Bynes were injured, we had to improvise with our closers. I am very pleased with the way that both Racheal, and Jacinda, pitched tonight, and both of them will get a lot of work during the rest of the season." The next night, Gil Bellows was the starter. He allowed only one run in eight innings, and, in the ninth, Racheal Ray came in, and gave up a homer to power hitter Alfonso Soriano, and the Good Guys fell, 2-0. Charlize Theron pitched on Wednesday night, and pitched into the eighth inning, leaving with a 3-2 lead. In the ninth, leading 3-2, Barrett was trying to save the game, but she gave up a homer, to tie the game. In the bottom of the ninth, Mitch saved the day, with a solo homer, in a 4-3 win.
Thursday was an off day. After counesling in the morning, Mitch and Naomi had to meet with the team at the ballpark, for a workout.
The Phillies came to town on Friday night. Neve Campbell got hit very hard, allowing five runs in five innings. The Good Guys nearly rallied in the ninth, but could not come through, falling short by a 5-4 score. Rachel Leigh Cook pitched on Saturday night. She gave the team a solid effort, with six innings of one run ball. Sniderman then played bullpen musical chairs again, as Naomi gave up nothing in the seventh, Racheal Ray was spotless in the eighth, and Jacinda blew the Phillies away in the ninth, of what turned out to be a fine 3-1 win. Kate Hudson went to the mound on a beautiful Sunday, in front of a sellout. The Good Guys needed a dominant effort from Kate that day,and they got one, a shutout, scattering only three hits, and striking out fourteen Phillies, in a 4-0 whitewashing.
The Reds entered Paradise on Monday, in the last series, before the team would go away again. Gil Bellows pitched on Monday night, and fired shutout ball for eight innings, before the Reds got two runs in the ninth. The Good Guys had more than enough, however, scoring seven runs of their own, in a 7-2 win. Charlize Theron took her turn on Tuesday night. Neve Campbell took the mound on a clear, perfect Wednesday, in the last game, before the Good Guys hit the road. She gave a credible effort, allowing two runs in her six innings. Leading 4-2 in the seventh, the bullpen went to work again, as Naomi had a scoreless seventh, Rachael Ray a scoreless eighth, and, despite giving up a homer in the ninth, Barrett got another save, in a 4-3 Good Guy win, that completed another solid six and three homestand. It had been a tumultous homestand with the injuries to Duff and Bynes, but, as the team packed to head to Washington, it was apparent that Barrett and Ray were very capable replacements.
In the meantime, the team held it's Saturday night tickle party, following the win over Philly. The featured lees, were, predictably, Jacinda Barrett and Rachael Ray. Both stripped to bras and panties, and were tied hands and feet to the beds, in the middle of the fetish club. Racheal was the first tickle victim, as Center Fielder Ed Burns began the tickle on her neck with fingers, as her head shifted from side to side, and the giggles began:HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE! ACK NO! Finally, Mitch was last, zeroing in on the soles of Rachael's pretty feet. Mitch attacked Rachael's feet with his fingers, two feathers, and ice over her soles and toes. Rachael went beserk, she wiggled her toes every which way, and begged for mercy, screaming with laughter:HEHEHEHEHHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE! OMG PLEASE NO MORE! I GIVE UP! NO PLEASE NO! No specific drama had taken place between Mitch and Naomi on that homestand, as most of the focus was on the injuries to Bynes and Duff, and the arrivals of Barrett and Ray. So, when Naomi drove Mitch to Nassau International Airport on Thursday night, to catch the team flight to Washington, there was no real tension between the couple at that point. "We had a quiet homestand, everything happened on field. You are leaving, and I'm not even mad at you. This hasnt happened for a while" Naomi said. "Yeah, I know, all is quiet on the front. Hopefully, it will stay this way, when I get back" Mitch said, as he headed into the airport.
So, it had been a very changable homestand, with personnel changes, and new faces. Now, those new faces, would hit the road with the team for the first time. Interesting replacements too, I've actually seen Racheal Ray's show on TV before, good choice, she's cute. Anyway, another great story and I look forward to the next one.
