The Good Guys embarked on their first road trip of the year. Things didnt start well, as they lost two of three in New York. The fortunes got better as they made their way to Atlanta, where they won two of three, before heading to Houston, and losing two of three. They returned home, on a Sunday night, to begin their second homestand of the year.
When the team returned home from Houston, it was early Sunday evening. Mitch and Naomi were very happy to see each other, after ten days away. They went to a beautiful dinner at Cafe Martinique, and got fairly drunk, before embarking on a night of wild lovemaking. In their haste, they got careless, and, that would play a role in the events to come.
First things first, as the homestand opened, on a beautiful, 73 degree evening, against the Pirates. Kate Hudson was on the hill. Matched up with the Cubs Kerry Wood that day, both were dominant, as Kate pitched nine shutout innings, punching out thirteen Cubs, and Wood fired ten scoreless innings, fanning fifteen Good Guys. In the eleventh, Center Fielder Ed Burns broke a scoreless tie, with a long homer to left center, for the only run of the game, in a 1-0 win.
St Louis entered Paradise on Monday, in the homestand's last series. Gil Bellows took the ball on Monday night. He pitched well, but, once again the Good Guys didnt hit, dropping the game, 1-0. Charlize Theron pitched a very strong game on Tuesday night, allowing two runs in eight innings, while striking out ten, in an eventual 5-2 win. Neve Campbell took the mound, on a clear, bright, 85 degree Wednesday, in front of a sellout. Neve allowed four runs in six innings, while not having her best stuff. Trailing 4-3, in the sixth, the Good Guys came up with three runs that inning, one more in the seventh, and yet another in the eighth, while the bullpen shut off the Cardinals with only one run, and Duff got the save in the ninth, in an 8-5 Good Guy win, that completed a fine six and three homestand. Everything was coming up peaches and cream on the field, but, off, things were about to take a most dramatic turn.
During that week, Naomi had noticed she was late with her time of the month. At first, she didnt think anything of it, because at certain times, when she was active, and playing ball, her cycle was off, and her doctor told her this was not abnormal. Several days went into a week, and then more, and finally, Naomi, very concerned, bought a home pregnancy test, and it came up positive! At first, she didnt believe the test, and scheduled an appointment with her doctor, for the Thursday that the Good Guys were to fly to Pittsburgh. Mitch had already told Sniderman that he needed a medical delay, to be with Naomi for a test, and would take a plane on Friday morning, in time to be in the lineup for that night in Pittsburgh. That Thursday, Naomi took a pregnancy test at the doctor's office, which would come back from the lab in 24 hours time. At 8am, Friday, the doctor called with the results, and Mitch put him on the speaker phone in the den:" Naomi, I have news for you. According to your test, you are pregnant. You are going to be a mommy for the fourth time" Naomi, who hadnt wanted any more children, felt her stomach flip over, and sweat form on her brow. Her season was over, maybe her career. What would Alan say? What would the other kids say? Her oldest daughter, Erin, was headed into her last stages of college, and was going to be a sister again. This was a clear change of life baby, and, what was normally a happy event, turned into a burden. When Mitch turned off the speaker phone, he was speechless. Naomi didnt know what to say either. Then, with a tone of fury in her voice, said to Mitch:" This is to stay between us. I dont want you to tell the kids, your mother, my mother, or anyone on the team, not even Russell.
