1918, wow. Something like 3/4 of silent films are lost forever, so to have this as an early mainstream entry makes it a real rarity. A cursory glance at YouTube turns up a couple of other quick moments in black and white films, but for Buster Keaton to be in one is a joy.

It's partially because therapists are trained to avoid it and partially because athletes are handled constantly and have to get used to being touched a lot.

It comes towards the end of the film and the guys tickle each other with their suits on as an intentionally odd way of the men wanting to physically bond in the same way that women do in a very silly moment (though the film has a lot to say about women's roles in society despite the goofiness)...

I imagine any model specializing in a particular body part would probably at least consider it in case something happens. I know that big time singers will get insurance on their voices.

Thanks, the whole thing is already written as part of a commission I did for someone else, it just needs a bit more editing. There will be a 'bridge' chapter to fill in the plot, but then we'll get to another nice scene :)

From what I understand, in America, a majority of the time when you see Renfaire ankle stocks in older videos, it's either done in comparative isolation not actually at a Renfaire, or it's an inversion, in which those locked in the stocks are actually performers, and not members of the public...
