Tumblr's shutting down Adult Content Blogs by Dec 17th

I despair of this creeping 'New Puritanism'. All the gains of the sexual revolution which we 'old folks' fought from the late 1960s to the late 1990s so that you younguns could have lots of sex and legal pot are being destroyed by the Progressive Snowflakes and their 'safe space' allies.

For those of you with a more historical turn of mind, the morals of the licentious Restoration, Georgian and Regency eras in Britain were followed by those crippling sociosexual practises of the sex-hating, death worshipping Victorians, and it's taken decades to shift that heavy, horrendous burden.

Now it's being re-imposed.

If only they actually moderation instead of relaying on AI algorithms...

As far as I've understood, they pretty much brought misfortune upon themselves and just lifted their hands up when they should have done actual work to resolve the situation. They have had serious problems with spamming porn bots they just could not purge, and since their human moderation was so slow to respond, it took long as hell for them to find and remove any truly vile content that avoided their inaccurate algorithms, like child porn. Apple even took the Tumblr app off the Apple store because they no longer considered it appropriate software.

And of course, when the panicking Tumblr staff wondered how they will fix this, they most likely just thought they should nuke everything remotely NSFW off their site as the only way to be sure about remaining advertiser and app store friendly (and of course to spend as little time and resources as possible). Lazy and playing it safe at expense of many great blogs and communities. They are basically saying to a rather large part of their userbase that they don't really care about them and actually would prefer if they were gone, especially as it's not only illegal content and raw pornography they want to eradicate. They really mean ALL of adult content.

That’s all very sad.
Even more sad that it’s happening not only in my country but everywhere. Viva revolution.
Viva those good times of the emerging Tickling Paradise and Yaqi.

To be honest though, the content they are banning is mostly copyrighted stuff or reposts of sample pics/videos you get here or similar forums that I'm sure exist. Though there are a lot of great people there, with some original content, I don't think it's much of a loss.

Anyway, as long as they don't take away the good memes we'll be ok. Lol

Those very adult Tumblr sites that are the intended targets are the only thing that keep Tumblr active and alive(and very well).

Loudly preach it,Libertine. 8) 8)

Sadly tickling pictures are already getting flagged even if there isn't any nudity in them. There are pictures of women feet getting tickled only with no sex and nudity and yet they are still getting flagged. If Tumblr removes them then I'm done with that site.

Here is one answer as to why this is probably happening. I love Watts The Safeword. Sites can now be held accountable for the content that gets posted regardless who has posted it in the U.S.

Blaming this on "Snowflakes" and "Safe Spaces" is arguably the worst take possible. Of course, it's a predictable talking point so it's literally no surprise. I suppose next we'll get a lecture about participation trophies and how political correctness will precede the downfall of western civilization :/

The repeal of the safe harbor provision isn't the only answer...nor is it the other reasons stated in the YT (celebrities, corporate copyright, etc.).
Tumblr has been blocked by Apple for weeks in the middle of the cross promotional holiday season. (story from Motherboard)
Steve Jobs : "folks who want porn can buy an Android phone" (quote from Motherboard)
Tumblr was acquired by Verizon after Yahoo went bankrupt.

Verizon's negotiating posture with Apple is well known as a broken backbone.
July 12th, 2013 Forbes story of Apple's externalizing.

"Nomura analyst Stuart Jeffrey has a new note on Apple's iPhone business that, if true, has serious implications for the future of the company.
Jeffrey believes Verizon is going to owe Apple $23.5 billion this year as part of its agreement to carry the iPhone.
The problem, from Verizon's perspective, is that it's not going to sell enough iPhones to cover the $23.5 billion bill.
Jeffrey estimates Verizon sold 7.2 million units in the first half of the year, and will sell 10.8 million in the second half of the year.
That leaves 19 million units valued at ~$12 billion unaccounted for."

Blue Soda, thank you.

As others have said above, and as could be known from spending a little time as a Tumblr user, this has nothing to do with politics or people looking for safe spaces. For months, Tumblr has been riddled with porn-bots and distributors of child pornography. As a result of growing amounts of its content becoming corrupted by, or even unintentionally adjacent to, these blights due to the way the notes/reblogging system is set up, Tumblr was eventually deemed to be too inappropriate to keep its position in the Apple app store, and was removed.

As you can imagine, this was catastrophe for the staff, and they reacted quickly and harshly - by most accounts, in haste and in fear. Now all sorts of content are being indiscriminately flagged as explicit - which means up for deletion by the staff's automated mod system.

It's sad to see such a valuable trove of community and media go to ruin this way. It's perhaps just as sad to see it being hoisted as political tool, or framed as an example of how 'progressives' (really?) are making things worse. It's the digital equivalent to politicizing a car crash that happened because one of the drivers was looking at porn on their phone. Don't do it.

Decided to pop over to my account after seeing this. Hysterical. Reminds me of the youtube days when even my private, age restricted, comment disabled videos would get flagged and removed even though some accounts posted far more explicit material in peace for years. The posts which are flagged vs not flagged. No rhyme or reason.

I know what you are talking about :) just palmface

In general I am opposed to this type of censorhip. However I do believe that some stuff on Tumblr was over the line (ultra violent/sexual content). And it made me quit Tumblr because I actually tried to maintain a descent blog about gender identity. However, because of the large amount of porn blogs on there, everyone assumed that my blog was "one of those". Just because I look androgynous I was "sexualised" on there because of that culture. So yeah, I do agree that there should be more limits to the blog contents on Tumblr. That doesn't mean everything should be banned though. But I do believe in modesty and the dignity of everyone, something Tumblr was starting to become short on.

Maybe I will get back to Tumblr one day if I can now be relieved of all the porn blogs sending me pm's :)

Muricans already were too keen on even censoring harmless nudity. Now they are gonna ruin the last thing that is good about tumblr. This time it's the SJW culture being the culprit.

Why does blame keep getting thrown at progressives and SJW's? Seriously, what have I missed, because I run in those crowds and so far everyone I know who has commented on it is either unhappy or just amused because they think it's badly implimented overkill. I have yet to see anyone who's like "good, this is just what we wanted."

Well, I just associate Tumblr with SJW. It's a common stereotype and stereotypes often have a kernel of truth to them. Tumblr's leadership is removing the thing I liked the most about Tumblr: a space for NSFW content that goes farther than DeviantArt allows.

Okay, but Tumblr's leadership is not the same as Tumblr's userbase. Blaming the userbase for the dumb thing the leadership is doing - especially when the userbase is largely upset with it - seems the wrong way to look at this.

"Gosh dang ol' progressive S. J. Dub'yas been at it a'gin! Hyuk! Hyuk!"

Give it a fuckin rest.

I try to remind myself that many people are from different countries, and politics are often quite different in other places, but at least from a USA perspective, any "new puritanism" type behavior is almost overwhelmingly conservative, and it is the progressives who fight against it. You know... the so-called "snowflakes" that conservatives like to tell what not to do because it's not how things were in "the good ol' days." Sure, there's conversations about "safe spaces" and "microaggressions" and such, but I don't know any progressives who are heavily into outright banning anything, except perhaps when it comes to Nazi propaganda. (Can't say I tolerate that myself, actually.) Certainly not sexual freedom of expression.

Now. Tumblr. As I have seen so far, that is TRULY a capitalist thing. It's about, as was said by several others here, mismanaging the site, permitting illegal activity via spambots, and not doing anything about it (or enough about it) until it hit them in their pocketbooks, after which they took a radical approach to trying to fix what was never the actual problem by using the same methods that didn't work well the first time. That's pretty much it. No parties, no social movements, nothing to get excited about except for the good old bottom line. And that is probably what's saddest about it all.

I hope it changes. Niche groups, especially fetish, LGBT+, women's interests and sex workers of all varieties found a good place on Tumblr, and that now has a very good chance of changing. It's too bad. But it's not about progressives ruining anything.
