German mathematician, actually born in what's now Lithuania. Worked in quadratic forms, invented the field of geometric number theory. Einstein used his work in formulating relativity. Died almost 100 years ago.
 
The first half of his second name sounds like an animal. And that's one fact I didn't have to look up!

Well, we use Minkowski diagrams alot in astronomy class for teaching relativity.

Anybody whose work was used by Einstein must have been reasonably bright. :D
 
Most people today have never heard of him (of Minkowski, they have heard of Einstein).
 
Herbert Spencer was a British philosopher, biologist, and anthropologist.
