20 years since the fall of the Iron Curtain...

For those of you who remember, what were your thoughts at the time?

I remember liking My Little Ponies and the Sound of Music. I also really liked the first grade.

To me it was the hope for a new beginning which still has yet to come to full fruition...

My ex was working for a German based company at the time and they sent chunks of the wall to them in metal cannisters....I still have a piece and still hold onto hope for the world to turn for the better...

I remember thinking that it was probably the most momentous event in history that I would witness in my lifetime. So far at least, I was right.

I was in the USAF at the time,based at RAF Lakenheath A friend of mine took some leave and went to The Wall,and bought a piece back with him

My one big regret is not going over there and getting a piece of history,or even taking pix of the wal as it was being torn down

I remember feeling very much the same. I thought the old beast would go on forever, and we'd have to live with what Ronald Reagan correctly labeled the Evil Empire, with it's queues that went on for hours in department stores with empty shelves and its repression. I thought the wall would stand forever, with East German police shooting people trying to get over the barbed wire and threatening to shoot anyone on the western side who attempted to help the individual. For me, the evil of Communism BEGAN with being forced to remain a prisoner in your own country. Everything else was gravy.

A large number of people actually thought that once the wall fell, there would all of a sudden be sunshine, and doves. As Ray said, they're still trying to find their way. The German economy has taken a LONG time to get back to even half the levels that predated 1989. Russia has lived through storms that only an incredibly strong society as Russia could survive. The quality of life in Poland, Hungary, and Rumania has vastly improved since those bygone days, but it's a very precarious existence.

Nevertheless, it's so much better, isn't it?

Indeed. The Russian people have never known freedom. They exchanged the tyranny of the Tsars for that of the communists. It should not be surprising that they are still trying to find their way. They will find it, given time. They are a great, resilient people.

I hope that all of you will take some time to read up on the Cold War, and come to appreciate how much others gave to give you the freedom you enjoy today.

It was an event that we (at a school that had all the military children at) got to watch, discuss and even celebrated with taking down a wall ourselves.

We were able to really honor the event, talk about it in all classes, and even had an assembly about it. It was truly a landmark event.
