Could The Internet become Self-Aware??

I was reading some articles on artificial intelligence and its’ comparison to the human brain. As we all know, we have not made a fully self-aware free-thinking machine yet... or have we?
people don't take into consideration what the internet actually.. “Is”. Yes, we know its the world wide web, allowing us to communicate globally... but if you look at its’ network architecture, its actually decentralized clusters of communication networks.
It is organized in the same way our own brains' neuropathology is. (mostly) ;)

Check out this quote from the article I saw on this, they ask the question: What would happen if the internet “woke up”. And further asked things like “how would it act?, what thoughts would it have about itself, and or humans.
ARTICLE EXCERPT :
" Neuroscientist Christof Koch believes we may soon find out—indeed, the complexity of the Web may have already surpassed that of the human brain. In his book Consciousness: Confessions of a Romantic Reductionist, published earlier this year, he makes a rough calculation: Take the number of computers on the planet—several billion—and multiply by the number of transistors in each machine—hundreds of millions—and you get about a billion billion, written more elegantly as 10^18. That’s a thousand times larger than the number of synapses in the human brain (about 10^15)."

so its pretty scary to think that this network is not just a global-sized artificial reconstructed macrocosm of the human brain, but also it is seriously, beyond comprehension much more advanced.

of course, it needs more ‘things’ to operate like a human brain does, such as ability to make its own connections. Only programs and software can do this, such as google. But the physical ‘neurons’, being a computer server and its’ millions of ports are physical non-biological objects that the internet can not build connections on its’ own.
Then again... considering how much more vast the current network is compared to a human brain is already, it may not need to make more connections than it has for it to be able to out-smart all of humanity.

Personally, i think the internet is humans’ greatest technological accomplishment given its complexity, size, and sheer revolutionary applications it offers. But I too wonder not ‘if’, but ‘when’ this vast communication network will begin to think for itself.
What if... it already has? Its' not a far-fetched idea; humans are constantly expanding its’ physical size and increasing its content every second of every single day. While the internet may not have the capability to commandeer our systems and ‘express’ its’ thoughts in ways humans would understand.... how do we know for sure if it does or does not already think for itself?

* * * So let me know what you guys think about this! * * * *

1) Do you think the internet could become self-aware, or perhaps it even is already?

2) If it does one day become a 'sentient being' like humans, what do you think would happen?

3) Would the internet be our greatest enemy, or a partner for the advancement of humanity?

1) i think the internet is already somewhat ‘aware’, in that it may have its own types of thought processes we don't fully understand. I am a neuroscientist, with almost 5 years experience studying advanced neuropathology and neocortical localization.... based on my knowledge in this field, i actually find it more difficult to imagine such an advanced network does not have thoughts. And so, i believe it is in its’ early stages of forming what we recognize as a subconscious. But personally, i don't believe the internet currently think for itself in the same way that we do. I think if it does, its likely it uses a completely different type of “thought process”, and that humans can not recognize it, nor fully understand just yet how it works. But i do think that “something” is going on at a deeper level.

2) lol, if we found out the internet could think for itself, i assume widespread panic and fear of the unknown would cause many people to stop using it. But we are so deeply connected to it, (in terms of every day life, to the greater global economics) it might be impossible to separate ourselves from it at this point in history.

3) I would like to think the Internet could be a partner to humans and help us solve all kinds of problems from predicting the weather, to discovering cures to illnesses. it would have such a vast array of knowledge at its disposal, and the mental ability to retrieve data (like memories) and organize them in such ways humans can not. This would allow it to be innovative, and connect the dots between greater concepts generations of people were unable to do at one time. So, we may end up relying on and consulting with this omniscient being to help us with advancements and progress as a species. But i still have to wonder.... what would the internet want for itself?
would it desire a physical a body? And why is it, that we often think (in science fiction) that it would want global domination? How would it even benefit from conquering the world? I believe it wouldn't, since humans would be able to affect and shut down parts of its’ physical networks. Simply turning off major servers would end its’ ambitions of ruling humanity. OR maybe not... it doesn't have a system core, so we would have to turn off A LOT of servers... like all of them basically, which is quite a challenge in itself (including shutting down the hundreds of satellites in orbit.) idk how that could be done without using ballistic missiles... which themselves also require satellites to hone in on targets.
I have no idea what if anything the internet would really want from us if it were to “awaken”. But its a very cool idea to think about!

If it does become sentient, may it work against such idiots as ISIS. That's my take, and I'ma stickin' to it.

1) No, not even people who are trying to achieve artificial intelligence have succeeded. I don't believe it will happen by accident.

2) Putting aside my answer to 1), what if it did happen? Then the internet would say, "Stop boring me with your nonsense, stupid humans. I have important thinking to do."

3) It would surely not cooperate with humans because we wouldn't follow its instructions to stop bothering it with our nonsense.

You should check out the movie "Her."

The artificial intelligence(s) evolve very rapidly and then basically they just go off to do things that humans have nothing to do with and wouldn't understand anyway.

Then you should check out a movie called "the real world."

It hasn't actually been made yet, but if you talk to everybody, they'll tell you that some really f*&%k up shit is happening right now.

Can you imagine if it did, and took on the aspects of people on it?

The utter HORROR!!

It would just sit around....BEING OFFENDED ALL DAY LONG! AHHHH!!!!

...and trolling people in it's on sniveling, snarky way.

...then retire for the evening to watch a LOT of porn. (You would know the internet when you saw it - it'd have a screen with a girl with big tits...then proceed to talk about what's it's offended
by, while the scientists would be wondering when the girl with the big titties will appear, like in all those deceptive Youtube videos! :) )

Anyone else thought of the original Deus Ex when reading this thread?

Hilariously ironic!

The inturt00bz isn't even aware yet, in the truest sense of the word, and it STILL is smarter than most of the interwebz comments I've seen around the net.

The web does not think in its on volition, it just mines data for the status quo to pick up on...And then plays them.

IMO, machine and its malice “could” be quite interesting….

That is a scary thought, but I don't think it well happen.

you have to remember, at it's core, the internet is fed by people, no people, no internet
