Best Movie Soundtracks

Two Biblical epics from MGM. Ben-Hur, music composed by Miklós Rózsa. Adapted from the novel Ben Hur: A Tale of The Christ by General Lew Wallace.

The Ten Commandments, music by Elmer Bernstein.

My favorite soundtracks that I can think of off the top of my head are Grease, Wizard of Oz, Jaws, Halloween(the original), Annie (the 1982 movie version), The Sound of Music, The Exorcist, Labyrinth, The Neverending Story, and Star Wars (the original 1977 or 78 I am not sure which) soundtrack.

I like 'Adventureland' (Velvet Underground, INXS, The Cure, Bowie, Crowded House), which seems to sum up the era and the feel of what's going on in the movie.

A lesser-known film is Black Pond, which has a nice little soundtrack of equally obscure music, highlight of which is the track 'Letters in the Wind' by Arthur Sharpe.
Leon (The Professional) - Sting/Bjork mostly.

Orchestral wise, I'll go with Schindler's List or anything Morricone.

'28 Days Later' has a pulsating score as well and I echo the votes for Clockwork Orange.

Other charming films to note for their musical accompaniments include 'The Iron Maiden' (Wind Orchestra mostly I think, accompanying the story of steam engines and forbidden love between classes), Genevieve (British classic with a score featuring Larry Adler on harmonica and a stunning trumpet solo with a jazz band) and Brassed Off (Brass Band).

Oh, I forgot to mention Black Swan - a film which rather blew me away at its climax, largely because of the Tchaikovsky-based musical score

How did we get this far with no mention of The Sting soundtrack?

Well long list to go i think one thread won't be enough! , but The lord of the rings soundtracks are my absolute favorites of all time some of them would be :

#1 "Evenstar" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im5CIpMFo4Q

#2 "Aniron" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uq6LCXNeS4U

#3 "The Grace of Undómiel" : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=616YMt6T5mA

and not to forget some of the good ol' Hans Zimmer hits from the dark knight, pearl harbor : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hl2CduaVLGE

I also love the themes from final fantasy advent children like this one : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x20TtbnUJ3E

Others would include this infamous theme : https://youtu.be/9LZFH4xC9Q8?list=PLNObdymy4C-qwsCcrGuWsiU81SlnMuMLJ&t=86

And that are some of what i remember atm, like I said its a long list!

Forest Gump is always going to be one of my absolute favorite soundtracks ever. Two cds that were filled with the best classic rock that I totally swiped from my uncle and he thought he lost haha. It's probably why I love the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks so much too.

Star Wars is always fantastic too. Really anything by John Williams.

The new Blade Runner movie (Blade Runner 2049) has a fantastic soundtrack. In fact, the movie was magnificent, and must be seen on the big screen - I highly suggest it.
Superb acting and gorgeous cinematography throughout!
I actually enjoyed it a LITTLE bit better than the original!

(Ryan Gosling actually does detective work, so this movie keeps your interest much more than the original did.)

The soundtrack for Star Trek Generations was one of the best, even though the movie wasn't that great.
They reused that soundtrack in most of the future Star Trek trailers from then on....

Another favorite is the music for Independence Day, (ID4). The new one was forgettable, but the music was really good for part one.

And finally, Dark City was another favorite soundtrack for me.
"The Strangers are Tuning" is my favorite epic soundtrack song on that one.
Song at the climax was beautiful.

I'm personally loving the soundtracks for the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit right now.

My favorite of the group? The song of the lonely mountain. ^_^

Kids in the Hall "Brain Candy." Holy shit! What an amazing collection of 90s indie/alt rock.

Tron Legacy

Sound track is by Daft Punk, but more generally any movie where the music is composed by either Hans Zimmer or Ramin Djawadi

The movie soundtracks that come to mind are Jaws, the Wizard
of Oz, the Neverending Story, Grease, the Goonies, The Godfather,
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, & Mannequin.

Note: These aren't links to the soundtracks, just songs within the soundtracks that I like. But all these films have great soundtracks

O Brother Where Art Thou

Casablanca

Jurassic Park

There Will Be Blood

Rushmore

The Graduate

Good to see some John Williams popping up! I bought a "Greatest Hits" album about a year ago (just a couple of quid from a charity shop, too! bargain! lol); one forgets how prolific that guy is.

I think the problem where this stuff is concerned is that a person's opinion of a film, or even just the nature the film, can taint their opinion of its soundtrack. Like if you were to say to somebody, "Check out this piece of music from The Phantom Menace", a likely response might go something along the lines of: "Fuck off with that shit already!" lol But if you were to introduce it by saying, "Check out this bit of orchestral music called Duel of the Fates" (another one of John Williams' creations), they would, most likely, be suitably impressed!

The soundtracks from the original Indiana Jones and Star Wars trilogies are a couple of personal favourites. :)

I saw a trailer for the new remake of Susperia.

Thom Yorke is doing the soundtrack, which will probably be dark and foreboding.

Other that spring to mind:

Howard Shore's Scanners and John Carpenter's Escape from New York

in addition to my earlier posts in the thread, I have been listening to quite a bit of synth-electro pop / ambient stuff.. the genre itself probably bridges various named genres.. but anyway, the excellent film Drive (2011) features three key tracks I love in this genre (remove spaces in links):

Electric Youth - A Real Hero (live version here)
https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=6cedWvuxwbc

Kavinsky - Nightcall
https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=30jrmzzgHLc

Desire - Under Your Spell
https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ZEAKJw8Cz1c

The not-so excellent film 'The Guest' (2014) also features a trio of tunes:

Annie - Anthonio
https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=NNtqUMjFNTY

Clan of Xymox - Masquerade
https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=KcJ3_fm_cAc

Clan of Xymox - A Day
https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=OiJ3KU0bme0

Sorry I haven't embedded them... I may come back and attempt it but it usually takes me a while and my head hurts :)

Cheers

Melancholy synth-pop, maybe? :p

Enjoyed Under Your Spell. Love the synth that comes in at 00:45!

1. The Duellists (opening and closing music)
2. Opening theme of Gettysburg. Captures both the glory and futility of the battle.

Dunkirk had a great soundtrack. Also The Graduate, and 28 Weeks Later
