Dear artists and fellow art lovers,

deviantART is for sure a great platform for the artists in our community. Yet, am I the only one to feel extremely annoyed by their medieval censorship policy? I am sure I do not have to explain to anyone what "deviant" means, but regardless, those restrictions have already caused a lot of damage to my friends' (Augustine, Yurihausen, Bohemianne and others) artwork. I mean, not everyone is a genius like Redscript or CAB, managing to make awesome, lush erotica while cleverly hiding their subject's anatomy (check below for examples).

36.jpg47.jpg Here are two very clever ways to make a drawing chaste without diminishing the erotic charge by not even a notch.

On the other hand, some artists express themselves better when they can show more, and it is a damn shame that they cannot. Here are two examples of what deviantART does to such artists:

red_by_bohemianne-d55fcx8.jpgoshaberi_censored__by_augustineart-db6ayax.jpg In the case of the first one, please note the utter hypocrisy of allowing the show of nipples but censoring the lick this man is giving them, like the problem is not the nudity but rather the fact that she is taking pleasure.

Am I the only one bothered by this?

Certainly not. I've always been annoyed with their censorship. You can have women spread eagle on there and they won't bat an eye (depending on the mod reviewing it), but if you even remotely show a penis in the image it's AN OUTRAGE. I even had my blog banned from being linked because it had an image of one of my OCs exposing herself, even though it was censored on site. But yet, someone else posted actual photos of spread labia but it wasn't an offense. (I liked to joke that my character was too much for them to handle, haha.)

Then there's the examples you're posting. If it's any type of fetish work where anyone's enjoying themselves, if it's not in their taste it's banned.
There should be filters for such content, preventing those under 18 to see, or those who wish to keep it 'clean' to have them filtered out. It's really not a hard concept to program, they already have the filters in place...

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that, there is ALREADY a content filter, so there is no point for censorship in the first place! If the 18+ content already does not show up unless one logs in, then what's the point? I really do not understand. Or rather, I think I understand, but the answer makes it even worse than it looks. Because such a censorship policy seems to betray a certain ideology I am very adverse to, kind of like last year when the UK banned everything related to women's pleasure...

I am not attacking deviantART as it is; some of our best artists are on it, and I respect the work they do. There are many things I like on it, but censorship in general, and their particular brand of it more specifically is worthy of criticism to say the least. It is all the more ironical when you take the site's very name into account; maybe it should be renamed chasteART or something

Thank you for your post, I feel less alone ;)

When people classifies your work as NSFW, you learn to live with Internet censorship shadow, unfortunately. Maybe it's just fear, but you can't play with this sh!t. Also because I've received already some DA notes asking me to "slow down" with my nude celebrity arts. So, I think that you can't take the risk.

DeviantFuck's censors, yeah, I've run into them.

People posts pictures of scrotums and penises on that site and they don't get banned yet I get banned for posting a picture of Naruto Shippuden Kunoichi in skimpy cheerleader outfits? I mean, shit, there wasn't even any nudity shown. The worst was a shot of Ino's underpants. That's it!

DeviantFuck has a long sad history of censoring what they view is unacceptable but allowing other shit that's even worse.

Since I only post stories on there, I have generally been fine, but I have noticed a trend with how ridiculous they are and how they tend to abuse their censorship guidelines.

See it from a different point of view. If it's not only about genitals - some artist really do focus on that only - there will come another kind of eroticism. For me those penis-only or vagina-only oriented pictures are pretty boring.

I agree with you, but at the same time just because you don't prefer that art doesn't mean they should be held to different censorship criteria. I'm just playing devil's advocate, though.

I once forgot to hit the "mature content" button and got flagged, and honestly I feel my stuff is pretty tame in that department. I re-posted with the mature box checked and had no trouble. I agree with the sentiment that it seems hit or miss, and it shouldn't be. If there are "maturity rules", then they should be very clearly detailed and everything should be held to the same bar.

Since the latter is not true on DA, then they need to re-think their rules or meat gods of enforcement.

Maybe it's time we start our own "Fetish Art" site! Although, that would be hard also considering the large amount of traffic DA sees. I guess I really don't have a good answer. But I do sympathize with the original gripe about DA and it's rediculous censorship criteria.

Do you have the link for the deviantArt page of the artist who created the first two?

Well seen from this perspective you're right. Does someone know the reason for this? It could be something legal?

I think it is very arbitrary actually. Site policy and all that; there are no laws where the site is based that forbid the pictures which have been censored, at least as far as I know.

I... I looked up about the UK ban and just... WHAT? WOW. How sad is that!
I can see some of the items on the list perhaps, but FEMALE EJACULATION???

And you are certainly not alone!
I am glad deviantart exists, without it I'd likely have never grown as much as an artist. I wouldn't have met several of my closest friends, either. But it's very sad to see the direction it's been going...

About the UK ban, let us keep in mind that like many of my British friends say, there is the law and then there is what people actually do. Her Majesty's kingdom is far from having become an oppressive tyranical state. However, what I find really worrysome in that ban is the ideology behind it, the quasi-obscurantist thinking that the sight of women taking pleasure or gaining control in any way is pornographic. This policy is a statement that within the realm, women's sexuality is only tolerated, not accepted. Which follows a more general trend in Europe, in the wake of its progressive islamization; actually I wonder if the whole thing was not a clumsy attempt to reach out to islamist voters...

I've always wondered, if it is not safe for work - why are you not just doing your work? if you get caught looking at dirty pictures at work on purpose, that's on you, not the website, anyway. First off, we need to get rid of the NSFW nomenclature.

If the place is called "Deviant Art," well..... take a guess what's going to be there *before* your lunch break.

100% agreed! I myself never understood that whole "NSFW" nomenclature (as a matter of fact, I do not understand many of contemporary neologisms). Although there are people who view porn at work, I am not really sure how censoring pics for the 99% of those who don't is a good idea.

I can come to terms with the fact that minors need to be protected from accidentally stumbling upon adult content, hence the need to log in on a website, confirming one is of age, and other similar procedures. But forcing artists to alter their vision is way out of line!

and what about that guy that posted a picture of the girl from little nightmares? they removed it because it was akin to child pornography and IT WASN'T EVEN SEXUAL!

Same for this forum. What bullshit is going to establish here? Why not adding NSFH (home), NSFW again (wife), NSFP (showing your parents) and a hundreds of other stupid hints?
If someon visits pages like this he should know what to expect. This is getting more and more ridiculous.

It's unfortunate, since sometimes it seems even though there's a Mature Content button available, some people successfully report them anyway. I really don't like it.
