How To Stop Worrying About Other People's Opinion's Of You

I should try this 5-second rule out myself. :) I care less about people’s thoughts of me now than I did a few years ago, but it takes a lot of heart/headache to thicken my skin. It’s worth it in the long run.

Well... I use to think it was about "thickening up my skin" but... I think its more about shutting down bullshit when it comes up. That way you retain your morals. You shoulden't have to give up who you are inside. Just adjust for certain situations. We all need to have lines that will not be crossed. And theres a way to do it that usually that can avoid unnecessary drama. Or having to become aggressive. Some situations there may not be a choice like if you have to use self defense. But overall. Remaining calm but having choice words can deflate most situations. And stop people in their tracks.

True, but by thickening up my skin I meant developing a (partial) immunity to things you haven’t experienced before or haven’t grown used to yet. My experience was that I used to care too much, be it for myself or others, and would often overreach and end up disappointed. I’m better now at setting my mindset like “I don’t need this, it’s their issue and not mine, I’ve nothing to lose” than I have been before. It may come from the belief that “ignorance is bliss”. SOME ignorance, mind you. If I stick to my morals and ignore the threats/issues that my paranoid mind is filling my head with, I’ll be fine. And I try to apply that mindset to most things I do in life. Doesn’t always work but I’m getting there.

Nice find and especially relevant in today's society. There are so many people/articles/etc out there that are trying to control our decisions, actions, thoughts, and language that it sickens me. At my age, this isn't something I struggle with anymore but I'll have to give his method a try the next time I slip up.
