Hello, hello.

I was wondering if anybody had ever stayed in – or had any desires to stay in – resorts/accommodation that could be considered quirky or unique.

The other night I was online checking out some possibilities regarding short stays and whatnot… But I wound up on a site called quirkyaccom.com. I was looking up log cabins to begin with (nothing particularly odd about those of course), but then I came across a “treehouses” category and thought, “Ooh, even better!” lol Some of the ones I came across looked amazing! One of my favourites in that category was something called The Magic Mountain Lodge, situated in the Chilean Andes. It’s kinda bonkers, but I love it.

And to give you an idea of how the interior is structured:

Another category I came across, which didn’t really appeal to me personally, was “former transport”. So you can stay in a helicopter on the Isle of Wight, or a Jumbo Jet in Stockholm… You know, like if you’re proper mental. lol

Any thoughts on this?

Cheeyers. :)

Too many stairs for my creaky old knees. It's different, I'll give it that.

Thanks for the reply, Bugman!

Ah. I must admit, the issue of knee creakiness had not been a consideration when I was doing my searches! Does this mean that the Skylodge Adventure Suites in Chile are also a no go?

Don't worry, if you don't fancy the 400 metre climb up a sheer rock face, you can always "hike an intrepid trail through ziplines" instead. lol
:p ;)

400 meters, so around 1,300 feet? Yeah, I'll El Paso on that and the zip line. :p

It reminds me of those Elven settlements you can find in Fantasy novels and games. I played a game last year (Pillars of Eternity) wherein the Elven nation's capital city looked a lot like the 1st picture.

Honestly, I could be tempted, but I am sure they charge too much money :p

I was trying to think what kind of creature it looks like it should house - cos it certainly ain't humans lol. Elves! Of course.

I want to stay at an ice hotel just once. I’m not a fan of the cold but I think this would be worth it for the experience. Any of these weird hotels are probably something I’d try if I could afford it. I’d love to do an underwater one too!

That Chilean Andes lodge looks fantastic.

I love the idea of staying in some unusual accommodation, particularly like the idea of treehouses and accommodation out on the water (or indeed underwater like the Utter Inn in Sweden - https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-utter-inn - part underwater, part above water - best of both worlds).

The website you used actually features a place where my parents have stayed - a site with a mixture of old railway carriages and vintage fairground caravans - I visited them there and they're really charming spaces, with lovely surroundings. I find the transport category particularly interesting as I'm a transport geek!

The second photo below is of a Grayson Perry artwork, 'A House for Essex' which (if you enter the ballot and have lots of money) can stay in - the interior is just as striking and it's part of a larger artwork project about a fictional woman from Essex called Julie Cope. I have followed the whole project as it's local to me and ties in with a gallery I used to work in. The house itself is in a really nice spot, quite ethereal and with river views.

There's also the Balancing Barn - https://www.living-architecture.co.uk/the-houses/balancing-barn/overview/ - which is promoted by the same organisation.

Cheers

I must admit, they look pretty spectacular. Don’t think I’d be tempted myself though – just cos of the temperature issue. How the hell do guests keep warm? lol

Yeah, I came across that one. I think it was described as an “art project.” And I thought, well that’s just as well, cos as accommodation it looks pretty damned impractical! lol Interesting concept though.

That's a new one on me. It’s like they looked at the hotel on stilts thing and said, “What if we got rid of the stilts?” lol Pretty impressive feat, if not exactly beautiful to behold!
