Tumblr's shutting down Adult Content Blogs by Dec 17th

I despair of this creeping 'New Puritanism'. All the gains of the sexual revolution which we 'old folks' fought from the late 1960s to the late 1990s so that you younguns could have lots of sex and legal pot are being destroyed by the Progressive Snowflakes and their 'safe space' allies.

For those of you with a more historical turn of mind, the morals of the licentious Restoration, Georgian and Regency eras in Britain were followed by those crippling sociosexual practises of the sex-hating, death worshipping Victorians, and it's taken decades to shift that heavy, horrendous burden.

Now it's being re-imposed.

BE REACTIONARY!!!

I couldn't agree more.

I wanna grab Foucault, Derrida, Guattary, Cohn-Bendit, Judith Butler, Sartre and De Beauvoir by the neck, and yell in their face: "Look at the monster you've created!"

Maybe if they knew what would have happened, they would not have bothered.

Meanwhile, we are left to deal with the nightmare they have left behind.

Here is one answer as to why this is probably happening. I love Watts The Safeword. Sites can now be held accountable for the content that gets posted regardless who has posted it in the U.S.

Yes this is very true also specifically in Tumblr’s case it is Now owned by Verizon which now owns Yahoo So we are also talking about a communications company that does not want to deal with liability traditional or new media

Those very adult Tumblr sites that are the intended targets are the only thing that keeps Tumblr active and alive

just make sure that if you ever decide to leave make sure you cancel your account, that hits harder than just an abandoned account

Why does blame keep getting thrown at progressives and SJW's? Seriously, what have I missed, because I run in those crowds and so far everyone I know who has commented on it is either unhappy or just amused because they think it's badly implimented overkill. I have yet to see anyone who's like "good, this is just what we wanted."

That's because the whole "safe space" narrative is total bullshit to begin with. It's contrived by people who broadly group anyone they disagree with as a "snowflake" or "SJW." The irony is that many of the same people who mock "snowflakes" or "safe spaces" will get their panties all in a wad when Starbucks doesn't make Christmas cups to their liking, or if Coca-cola runs a commercial in Spanish.

Besides, Tumblr has largely been a platform favored by queer, trans and people of color as a platform for body positive and sex positive porn. So the idea that progressives would want to shut that down just doesn't stand to reason.

Wanna know why I'm not fighting for it? Producers deserve to get paid for their work. (I know the free publicity we all said but no... they don't want that. Not the use of their videos especially!) Also children using Tumblr because their parents are too busy to watch their history. And the sickos and perverts that trade illegal porn, take advantage of the sharing publicly. It reminds me of Craigslist sometimes, unfortuanetly. Not worth it. Any interests including LGBTQA, can find PLENTY of other networks. :)

I am not that wanting to be financially fake, or flashy, for a following. (Say that 10x fast LOL.) Nor am I that Voyeuristic of a person to just keep using a site that children use also. If Tumblr can't regulate better than they have to date... I say let it go.

I've also lost my interest because of the ads they run. Just like FB. I'm just over the entire set up. It was fun. But I'm not going to Instagram that's for sure either to think the same things aren't happening there. I'm good. I say let it go. And I signed the petition already. lol It's just not worth it, thinking back, after all.

If you have been flagged for content, (As I have now been. ) Please read the update on the guidelines.

I say good! Open social media platforms, and Id say open search results on search engines, are not the place for adult orientated material, regardless of its level! I don't agree otherwise innocent search queries being populated with many examples of that type of material! With that said, I bet that the vast majority of the posts are made by people who are not the original content creator, and who do not have permission from the content creator, so most shouldn't be there anyways!

Deleted my account. Granted, my original content was sporadic, but I just knew I'd get shut down, anyway. And it sounds like Facebook will be amping up efforts to do the same, PLUS they are using an algorithm in Messenger to censor anything sex-related. SESTA/FOSTA is going to do more harm than good, and it already has.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I say good. Parents shouldn't want the material plastered everywhere for easy access. Besides, there are more appropriate platforms for that material.

Blaming this on "Snowflakes" and "Safe Spaces" is arguably the worst take possible. Of course, it's a predictable talking point so it's literally no surprise. I suppose next we'll get a lecture about participation trophies and how political correctness will precede the downfall of western civilization :/

Insult for insult and up your climate change, sweetie. This ban may or may not be lifted, but meanwhile let's consider who was behind it.

But I'll concede not all millennials are so ideologically hidebound. Here's an excellent essay on the subject by a young Canadian woman, decrying the puritanism ruining the lives of ordinary would-be lovers.

I try to remind myself that many people are from different countries, and politics are often quite different in other places, but at least from a USA perspective, any "new puritanism" type behavior is almost overwhelmingly conservative, and it is the progressives who fight against it. You know... the so-called "snowflakes" that conservatives like to tell what not to do because it's not how things were in "the good ol' days." Sure, there's conversations about "safe spaces" and "microaggressions" and such, but I don't know any progressives who are heavily into outright banning anything, except perhaps when it comes to Nazi propaganda. (Can't say I tolerate that myself, actually.) Certainly not sexual freedom of expression.

Now. Tumblr. As I have seen so far, that is TRULY a capitalist thing. It's about, as was said by several others here, mismanaging the site, permitting illegal activity via spambots, and not doing anything about it (or enough about it) until it hit them in their pocketbooks, after which they took a radical approach to trying to fix what was never the actual problem by using the same methods that didn't work well the first time. That's pretty much it. No parties, no social movements, nothing to get excited about except for the good old bottom line. And that is probably what's saddest about it all.

I hope it changes. Niche groups, especially fetish, LGBT+, women's interests and sex workers of all varieties found a good place on Tumblr, and that now has a very good chance of changing. It's too bad. But it's not about progressives ruining anything.

Tumblr's story begins with Yahoo's $1+ billion acquisition of Tumblr.
Yahoo's imaginary projection of $100 million annually from Tumblr obviously resulted in a write off.
Few years later Verizon acquires the bankrupt brands of AOL & Yahoo...by then those assets bring in less than 1% of Verizon's annual revenue.

Verizon's story begins as the Baby Bell of the North Atlantic (telecom industry was a monopoly before the trust bust).
Verizon became a major local telecom after the $70 billion acquisition of GTE (23 million customers).
Verizon ads just doesn't seem very believable to me (running a 5G ad with a workman on a tower in the middle of the forest...tend to favor WSJ's YT saying 5G will take forever...
...most people I'd known have had spotty service from Verizon 4G).

Apple's late story begins with getting bailed out by Microsoft (to allegedly serve purpose against the trust bust). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_SXtJf2oz4
Apple's Steve Jobs traded tax incentives for a lone computer for each school (1st in CA). http://hackeducation.com/2015/02/25/kids-cant-wait-apple
Apple's Steve Jobs planted one of the seeds of the Apple cult for each school.
Cross-promotional Apple & Verizon holiday ads feature flagship IPhone's XR (meanwhile Apple's November stock slump after disappointing sales prove Apple lost due to planned obsolesce...XS had good sales figures for a high end Apple).

Now Facebook can be added to the long list of social media sites banning adult content as well. https://www.freespeechcoalition.com...RI_27nJ80wxYDvdrJ2k9BaWW195QQQD7eNymzIahzdPxU

Look I get that maybe Tumblr had talked about getting rid of adult content in the past, but it's hard for me to believe that the passing of SESTA/FOSTA wasn't a factor in finally getting rid of adult content. I hope you guys understand that this forum is not immuned. Vbulletin could decide they don't want to deal with a potential lawsuit either and could ban all adult forums. If you seriously think this is not an adult forum then I would like to know what world you're living in.

Facebook was already infamous for censoring breastfeeding pictures, classic paintings and sculptures... now this; I am hardly surprised

All great info. It's a total bummer. Hopefully Vbulletin is at least left alone

To me it's long overdue. ...imagine how the site owners feel:

"You ever use Tumblr?"

"The porn site? Oh hell ya!"

"Uh. ...you know it was just an open ended site with blogs for like daily life stuff, right?"

"Ya but look at this!" *pulls out porn GIF*

"......."

It probably puts Tumblr into a different site classification that costs more to host or something. Honestly as much as I enjoyed that site I got bored and couldn't find things I wanted. I ended up switching to Bing.
