On Jan. 27 1967 Astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee were sitting in the command module atop a Saturn V rocket when a flash fire swept the module, killing all three men. I remember this tragedy almost like it was yesterday. RIP. :(

(had to chime in...) As I remember, at that time they were using almost pure oxygen in the cabin....which made the fire spread so rapidly (I could be wrong, was a long time ago). But yes RIP to our first astronaut casualties.

The following Monday after "The Fire", Gene Kranz rallies the the exceptional, but ordinary heroes of Mission Control. This should inspire people and light a fire under the laziest asses. I wished I had a boss like him. Today's young "know-it-alls" would collapse if they got chewed out by him. This is from the History Channel's Failure Is Not An Option from 2003 narrated by Scott Glenn:

I remember that tragedy well. I was at a friends house playing the board game Risk when my friend's mother, who had been listening to the radio, came in to the living room and told us the horrible news. It was a very sad day. :(
