Can anybody else tickle themselves?

For some reason I am so sensitive and ticklish that I can easily tickle myself anywhere and giggle/jerk away from my own hand, even taking showers takes a lot of time, I can only use those hard, mean sponges because soft ones and hands are just impossible to use!

It has its benefits though of course, it's not the same as being tickled but it is something at least;)

Can anybody else relate?

Yeah. I can on my feet. I guess they say it’s a possible sign of schizophrenia, which is kind of scary. I guess it’s a sign we have trouble differentiating between what we’re doing to ourselves versus what other people are doing. Luckily I’ve never had problems like that in other contexts. I think my feet are just really sensitive.

Is that so? Thankfully I'm seeing a therapist so no worries, and I have no other signs, just awkwardly sensitive skin

Let me update you on that! Today I asked my psychiatrist out of curiosity, she assured me in her recent studies about schizophrenia she has never heard such a thing, I think it has to be something a few specialists theorized, and since it looks interesting it made its way across the web.
Not only that, a diagnosis requires a lot more factors, rest assured my friend, as questioning our sanity is what makes us sane!

I see the link you added talks about being as ticklish as if someone else was doing it- not my case at all. On myself I can just feel it on my feet, and a little on my stomach, but it's nothing compared to someone else doing it ahaha! It's just an annoyance more than anything

I mean, if I purposely give my foot a quick "scrape" across an area I know is particularly sensitive, there is definitely an involuntary, reflexive response -- so in that sense, yes, but I never giggle or laugh from self tickling. I also think that most generic medical studies, and definitely run of the mill medical doctors, have no idea what they're talking about.

You need to remember too -- they don't even have any idea really about how the brain works other than it's most basic functions.

I think you can relax -- you probably aren't schizophrenic.

Nice research! Like you said, must just be an internet theory then. Glad to hear that :)

Ive noticed that tickling is a mechanism of human functioning that isnt completely understood. Like, the leading idea(to my current knowledge) is that it functions as a defense mechanism. Gargalesis is a tool of social evolution that conditions us to protect our vital areas. In the brain, it activates the same areas that light up in response to pain.
But, these explanations dont take into account how arousal towards tickling can affect your minds ability to convince yourself that you're ticklish. In my opinion, tickling is as much of a psychological phenomena as it is a physical. The reflex exists within us as a reflection of what it means to us. So, tl:dr, i would imagine that being more open to the idea of tickling, of tickling yourself, and accepting that on some level you could likely convince yourself that self tickling is having a believable effect, would be enable you to feel like you're able to effectively tickle yourself.

My feet are so ticklish that when my foot gets itchy I can't scratch the itch.

I agree because my feet are extremely sensitive as well

No. In my opinion, this is something that only people in the tickle community claim because sensitivity is a very attractive trait for many. I have no other explanations except that it is popular to dismiss science in some countries at present.

Yes, but I'm not able to make myself laugh. It's a reflexive thing, and it happens when I tickle my crotch or inner thighs. They're pretty sensitive though, so I don't tickle myself down there for long haha.

Yeah, it's highly unlikely you'd have schizophrenia. It's just one sign and one part of the body.

Sort of. I used to not be able to, but it seems as I've gotten older, I often accidentally do it when I'm using the scrubby thing on my feet.

You can tickle yourself with knismesis (light tickling, like when I have to wash between my toes in the shower *shudder*), but you cannot generally tickle yourself with gargalesis.

Good news! Y'all aren't schizophrenic :)

I have tickled my own feet before, and I can just barely fight the urge to pull away. If I force myself not to stop... it just becomes irritating like having a muscle spasm and is not as ticklish then.

Isabeau used to be able to tickle herself. And I heard her do this.
