Placing the characters can be tricky, but once you get it down, you'll be able to place your characters in around 30 minutes or so. Rendering (for me at least) takes about 2 hours or so.

I've only paid for the assets and stuff that I use for the models. Luckily, a lot of stuff goes on sale pretty often, so it's not TOO difficult to gather resources.

The best way to learn is to watch experienced creators play around with it on YouTube. I've also asked some of my friends on DA for help, specifically JennyGirl since she's the most experienced person I know with it.
