Welcome to the Stories Forum. Unlike the Discussion forums and similar to Artwork, things posted here are subject to personal appreciation rather than open debate. A concept can be discussed, but with works of creative originality, it’s pretty much like or dislike. So, a word or two about the decorum and diplomacy of critiquing other’s works.

First off, these are NOT RULES. They are suggestions. There’s no right or wrong when expressing your opinions of another’s work, just as there is no right or wrong about posting it in the first place.

The TMF has two main purposes: To provide a space to post your thoughts, stories or artwork regarding the tickling fetish, and to provide an open forum to discuss said posts. We do not claim to be a professional writing publication, as most members simply like to share whatever level of talent they have with others. We strive to both support freelance fiction AND to support the basic principle of free speech regarding it.

If you post your work here, prepare yourself to be critiqued as well as appreciated. It’s nice to have a lot of posts telling you how good your work is, but not everyone likes the same thing. Fiction is very subjective. Everyone needs to be able to withstand a little constructive criticism. In the long run, it can only help you. If someone tells you they would have set up the story differently or used a different style of punctuation, you have two choices: get upset and never post again, which would be bad…or deal with it and either agree or don’t. It’s your work, do what you will, but be open to suggestion.

On the other hand, when critiquing the work of others keep in mind that there is a constructive way to do it and a negative way to do it. Most of the people who post here are not professionals and are simply expressing themselves for fun. It’s an internet tickling forum, not the Times Book Review. Keep critiques simple and maybe limited to one point. If you find yourself picking out the same thing from the same writer over and over, perhaps that’s just their style. Remember that some folks really enjoy sharing their work with others and what you might think is a necessary critique could be a crushing blow to someone’s sense of sharing, and isn’t going to change their style anyway.

In closing, free speech will NOT be limited for the sake of camaraderie, but continued nit-picking is frowned upon. If you wish to be known as a writer or member who always criticizes the work of others, that’s your right, although it may backfire. If you can’t handle any criticism at all, that’s just as risky. In the end, if someone posts something you don’t like, you do have the ultimate weapon the Internet has to give…the ability to completely ignore.

These are simply suggestions for the continued sense of community and diplomacy that the Stories Forum has always striven for. Of course, the basic principles of the Golden Rule apply here as they do all other sections of the TMF, so keep that in mind when formulating your thoughts. While free speech will not be infringed upon (within reason), useless threads of back-and-forth argument that have nothing else to provide will be reviewed and possibly closed.

Thank you all for your time, and keep on writing. The amateur aspect of our work is what the TMF is all about.
