Iam not going to discuss who wrote the post that caused me to think of this rule, but I have just thought of an idea that might really serve well in cracking down on all the rude posters, and troublemakers in the chat who seem to do little else but engage in attacks on forum, and in chat. That is, the old system which is employed in some jurisdictions. 3 strikes, and you're out, permanently.
Harsh? Maybe so, but it just seems to me that there are some people who come here for no other purpose than to pick fights, put down others, and cause trouble in chat. While they might not technically violate the "Golden Rule", it just seems to me that these people do little else than act disruptive, and chase people away.
My proposal of such would come with penalties along the way. On the first time a person intentionally attacks someone, they get one warning, which doesnt count toward their 3 strikes. After that, the second time they attack someone in chat, or on forum, give them a one week ban. Then, the third time, make it 30 days. Finally, after that, if they do so again, make the ban permanent. I believe that enforcement of said rules would make people think twice before acting like troublemakers in chat or on forum. Had I already received a warning, I sure as hell would watch my step, because I wouldnt want to be banned from here, even for a week. I believe this can help in curbing problems.
I will not say the name of the person who did this, but I saw another poster, who seemingly did nothing in their posts but attack people on a regular basis, and they are still here. A person like that should have been warned and received at least a temporary ban a long time ago. To my knowledge, their attacking posts have happened on a regular basis over time.
I dont know what Myriads or the admins think of this idea, but it is just a thought. It might serve to crack down on some of the attacks on forum and in chat. Just an idea.

Well sweetie~I'm not a mod, as you know but I do have mixed emotions about this. Why? I never go into chat for starters. BUT~We all are a little nuts sometimes, yes? Everyone's entitled to a bad day now and then? I do notice tho, that if a poster contributes NOTHING but negativity, they eventually get banned and I love that...
XOXO

Fair enough. I do understand the point. My idea was based on the notion of trying to clean up some of the attacks and bad behavior both in chat, and on forum. A very valid point. Thanks. I dont know if this will ever happen, but it's just an idea.
I hope you are well, Steph. Take care.

For the most part I think we are reluctant to implement any hard rules like this that restrict how we deal with situations. Every case is different and every person with a problem deserves to be dealt with as a unique individual with a valid point of view.

This is, in my humble opinion, one of the best moderated forums on the internet, and I attribute that to the willingness of the mods here to be human beings and deal with others as human beings, not as statistics, which is what I fear a three-strikes rule would lead to.

Okay, fair enough. I was hoping either you or Myriads would respond, Jeff. You do have a very strong point, that each case is different. I just thought maybe this idea might serve to curb problems. The mods here are certainly dedicated and dilligent, and yes, it is a strongly moderated forum, attributed to the work of you, Myriads, and the other mods. Thank you for the reply, Jeff.

What Jeff said. Couldn't have put it better myself.

You too sweetheart, just sharing my thoughts....:justlips:

I agree with the mods. Three strikes and your out would be terrible. I'd have been banned by now.

Yep. This is a privately owned, MODERATED forum. That means censorship and moderation is instituted as deemed necessary by the forum administration and moderating staff. Anyone who has a problem with that can let themselves out the same way they came in and not look back.

I noticed something....

First of all I cannot Spell Facist ( is this right ) to save my life. We all know my typing skills but Mr W2F like ot THROW that word around alot.. even though he cant spell it the same way twice. I of course will support any ideas the owners impliment and I also agree with Mitch and Mimi. BUt I must tell you a couple of folks have been coming in to chat room lately and cause an unwelcomed harassment of the populace so as I get hit with complaints as soon as I get in. Had to ESCORT one out the other day. Basical W2F If you dont like the rulles in the sandbox.. there are plenty of other places for your small mind to go play in.

Have a nice day.

i can see all the sheeple, urrrr. i mean people, here have been well conditioned
so what, its only a little censorship. whats the big deal.

In the first year of the forum we had many users who came forward with this viewpoint. It's been a bit since we've seen one, but it's instructive to have a discussion about the topic from time to time.

The argument used over and over lies in the 'Free speech' realm. Basically the poster holds that they have the right to say what they want, when they want, how they want.

And in public spaces in the US you can do this. Your speach may have some interesting concequences (Try yelling a racial term or two in South Central LA and see what happens.) but you are indeed free to exercise your 'right' in a public space.

The fact that is missed by most folks is that the TMF is not a 'public space'. This is a private space where all of our members are invited guests. The fact that access is fairly simple to get may make that fact hard to see, but it's there none the less.

And since this is 'Our house' so to speak. We can set the rules for what we feel is proper behavior here. This includes not allowing the discussion of a small set of topics (Minors). The posting of copyrighted material. And not being insulting to your fellow members. Violate these rules of conduct that we request of you, our guest, and yes, we will remove your posts or access.

Do I enjoy 'censoring' people? Not very much, but I also don't enjoy a community that is been thrown into chaos because of the small segment of people incapible of being civil in behavior, or the smaller set of people who get off on causing issues 'To see what will happen'. I, and the moderation staff enforce our rules for the benefit of the community we have constructed here.

Yes, your speach here is only as free as we choose to make it. But we have told you where the lines are (Check our rules forum, and specific stickies in some forums), and offer a lot of understanding when people break those rules, to be sure there has simply not been a misunderstanding. There are few things here which are not allowed. We are pretty open. And it's pretty easy to operate here.

If a moderated community is not to your taste, there are the tickling newsgroups which are unmoderated where you can feel free to speak as you see fit. Not everyplace is right for everyone.

Out of curiosity what is it that you feel you cannot discuss here that makes you feel 'cesored'?

Myriads

Myriads, I certainly dont want to add any more "fire" to this topic, so to speak, but, since I was unjustifiably called a "facist" by this guy, along with his comment about you, also unjustified I might add, I did want to chime in here, especially since I was the one who started this thread in the first place.
First, I will say that I was very surprised that this thread was reopened, almost six months after Jeff and you clearly stated your points of view about my suggestion of 3 strikes and out. I accepted your decisions, as you and Jeff are the heads of the forum, and to me, this thread was dropped. The fact that is was re opened six months later, and has had three mods post in it in a couple of days time, is to me, troubling. This is how I see things.
Not to parrot or paraphase what Mimi said, but, basically, she is 100% right. This is Jeff's forum. He runs it, along with you, Mimi and the other mods. The mods and admins have the right to make any rules they want, as this site is private. Whoever doesnt like it, doesnt have to be here.
Personally, I like the Golden Rules, and my original point about 3 strikes, was to attempt to tone down, some of the increasing attacks I saw at the point I posted this thread. Jeff made his case clear. I acknowledged it, validated his point, and dropped it.
Basically, without the Golden Rules, this forum would simply turn into a place where everyone who had a bad day could come to, and let out their frustrations on their fellow chatters, for no reason. I see that the rules protect both the chatters and the mods. Without them, we might well have a board or forum filled with all kinds of attacks, just because everyone who had a bad day, decided to come here, and let out their aggressions, which we all have at some point, due to the complexities of life, at our fellow forum members.
One final point: You had mentioned a while back that if people wish to have forums to "bang" on or attack each other, that there are other ones out there, and that as this forum, the TMF, is the mods and users internet home, and private, such will not be tolerated here. The TMF to me is like a private club, the owners and managers, make the rules, and the members can leave or be forced to, if they dont like such. We all read the rules when we first came here, so for anyone who chooses to stay here, the guidelines are clear.
Okay, I am done. As I said, my point here is not to add any more fuel to the fire. I merely wanted to point out my view about the forum and rules here. I will again say that I was surprised, and a bit disturbed, that everyone's time had to be taken up with a thread that is six months old, and which has already been clarfied by Jeff and yourself. I personally would not like a forum such as the one that Way2fun suggested. This one is just fine. Even if we dont agree with all the rules, we need to follow them, to stay here, and to me, the rules here are a heck of a lot better then having a free for all where everyone is attacking each other all day long. End Of Post.

Mitch

the thing about banning and calling someone a fascist is harsh to say the least. i used to hang out in courtttchat room where many things were bannable. such as words like fuck, shit, bitch, biotch, shit-zu at one time dick van dyke, fag, callling others names, cock or cocktail, dyke, lesbo, shag, bastard, just to name a few. you could get silenced for up to two hours, or a week if you called anyone an asshole. or kick my ass. its not about freedom of speech, its about the rules certain chats have.

isabeau

ps i was banned from courttvchat once for an entire week because my husband went in as cartman defending me from some attacks.

I'm just relieved that making completely senseless and barmy posts does not incur a ban- I would've been banned years ago
Now......let's all bibble bobble :happyfloa

When the TMF first opened, there was a policy in place that called for three bat-wielding thugs to come to your house and beat your computer to dime-sized chips if you posted more than 3 stupid posts. This is my fourth computer. Thank god that policy is no longer in effect.

Nope.

I've been here long enought to remember the maurading bands of midget according players who would stand outside your house singing a polka version of "Enter the Sandman" while a chorus of barking dogs provided the back beat!

And THAT was for disagreeing with someone in a negative way!
