How do you define the phrase "Significant Other"

Does it just refer to somebody with whom you are romantically attached? Or can it refer to two best friends that hang out together alot?

I agree with Hari's definition. "Significant Other" to me, is another way of saying girlfriend, or romantic partner.

Cosigned. It refers to the Ones with whom I'm spending my life and to whom I'm devoting myself for as long as we're all living :redheart: It almost fits my two best friends as much as I love them, but as we're not romantically OR D/s involved it's not quite appropriate :triangle:

I edited my original response, I realized that in 2001 when I was collared to a female with whom I wasn't romantically involved I did consider her a S.O. :smilestar
 
Significant other has always been my way, and I think most peoples' way, of saying "special someone" "boyfriend" "girlfriend" "husband" "wife" etc in a more vague manner.
 
For me, "spouse" is more appropriate to it. It is the other half, thus, significant other, the one you share the higher depths of friendship and spiritual attachment.
