although some consider the TPC the fourth major, the really first major tournament begins tomorrow in augusta, georgia.. the rite of spring the Masters. probably without a doubt one of the most gorgeous golf courses on the pga men's tour. i remember skimming thru the channels way back in the late eighties at night and happened to hit USA channel which was showing re runs of that days Master's tournament. my eye immediately was caught by the most handsome guy i ever had seen, at least at that time. i mean, seve ballesteros and his equally handsome caddy, his brother. from then i was hooked to men's golf, up until i discovered nascar lol and men's golf suddenly lost that appeal for me. but i still watch the Masters. probably the most coveted championship on the pga tour.. i know i would want to win that one. and i always thought what a shame that greg norman came so close to winning, only to finish second, such as in one tournament when he was tied for the lead and in a playoff with o rats i cant remember his name, but the guy chipped a shot from off the green that went right into the hole and poor greg lost again..

Great post, Izzy 😀 I still can't believe poor Greg Norman's melt down that Sunday 🙁 Seven shot lead into the final round.... then poof! I believe he lost out to Nick Faldo that day. Btw, TPC (The Players Championship) is widely considered the 5th major 😉

I love the tradition of the Masters... such a gorgeous, tough golf course. Watching Mike Weir win it for Canada in 2003 is a memory I'll never forget... I mean, who wouldn't want one of those green jackets?! :woot:

Anyone have any picks for this year's champion? I'm gunning for Mike Weir (-1 after the first round)... what can I say, I'm such a homer! :couch:

well finally someone else who likes the masters. i was beginning to wonder. lol i knew i could count on you leaf.. yea mike weir is good. hmm my money is on ben crenshaw. lol. vija singh is in the lead after the first days round.

I still like Mike after day 2, but there's a certain Tiger lurking in the weeds... :manicd: Good to see Freddie Couples challenge!

hmm ok i didnt see that. but what in the hell happened to david duval? at one time he was considered the greatest golfer in the world. today he was dead last. and ben crenshaw is in the top ten.. wtg old guy lololol

isabeau

yuck on fred, i call him the girlie man hehehe

Girlie man?? LMAO! Aww, poor Freddie! Good to see that old fart, Crenshaw, in the top ten... I mean, wowzers! 😀

Duval is a pretty sad story... no idea what happened to him. He's tried to come back, but obviously it hasn't been very successful 😕 Apparently he was having troubles with vertigo or something at one time.

Good to see the world's top 5 all in contention.

Hey Izzy... looks like we're the only one's around here who appreciate the Masters, lol :twohugs: Thankfully, they were able to award the green jacket today to none other than Phil Mickelson 😀 Wow, that's 3 of the last 9 majors that he's won... including now two green jackets! :wow:

Very promising final round with so many of the worlds top players bunched at the top, but lefty was able to pull away for a pretty much perfect day of golf by anyone's standards 🙂

It was kinda funny to see Tiger pout all day... if he'd made just 3 of the many makeable putts he had, he'd have been right there too :rotate:

tiger has a bad attitude..cussing on camera, acting like a spoiled brat. he can't win every major, he needs to grow up. i was thinking he might come back, we went walking during the match, when we came back, he must have messed up super bad, because they were no longer covering his game. and about phil, yes i'm glad he won.. i was arguing with hubby last night, i thought this was his first master's win. guess i was wrong. grrrr and it would have been cool if freddie, the girlie man, had won at the age of 46, because twenty years ago, jack nicklaus had won at the advanced age of 46 also... lol

isabeau

I was really pulling for Freddie there, its too bad... he missed so many great opportunities! I thought the added lore of the Nicklaus connection might make for a terrific ending... but he did well, didn't he? 😀

And you know I"m just ribbin' ya about the age factor, you 😉 :Kiss2:

One of the strangest Tiger Woods statistics is that all his major wins have been with the lead going into the last round. Even though he almost never loses when he takes the lead into a final round, he's won enough ordinary tour titles from behind and at least twice in the last three years he's made a serious run at a major after making the cut on the number.

It was nice to see the tribute to Jack Nicklaus' dramatic win and last major triumph twenty years ago. That's one half of my favourite first-and-last two-sport coincidence. Apparently not only on the same day but at almost exactly the same time as Jack went eagle-birdie-birdie to erase a four-shot deficit on the 15th-17th holes in his last win, Steffi Graf, up a set, came back from 0-4 in the second set to beat Chris Evert for the first time and claim her first WTA tour title.

Graf VS. Evert... wow, that IS going back, lol! Cool, had no idea... interesting!

The Masters starts today....Arnold Palmer will tee off with the honorable tee off to start the tournament....and this year for the first time, international players will out-number the US players..

hmmm any more golf fans out there this year? i know i said golf sucks, but i still enjoy this tournament..

Four!

Did you really say that? That doesn't sound like you. Yes, I like golf. There- I said it, okay?! Actually, I'm pulling for Retief Goosen. He's at four over after the first round, though, so he needs to play well today. Hopefully, he's not up reading this right now rather than getting some precious shut-eye. Who are you rooting for, Isabeau?

It's a good thing I'm not the one teeing off to start the tournament. I would probably unleash an honorable shank into the right honorable gallery and send someone to the honorable infirmary.

whoohooo...did i really say what????lol...hmm i will root for hmm i always like Bernhard Langer..and is that V J Singh's son playing? cool....my favorite was Seve Ballesteros...*sighs....one of the best looking men at one time...i'll also root for Davis Love III and Ben Crenshaw...i like Tiger, but he's won already lol....and whatever happened to David Duval???? now there was a well built golfer...

and City you nut....i've missed your humour....give me a ring a ding ding some time lol..

Isabeau, that was a great event day. My feeble mind tells me that it might have been Paul Azinger that chipped in, but regardless, it was a fun match to watch. I also would have like to see the Shark get a Masters, but I didn't mind Azinger getting one either, especially later when he fought through the Cancer. I really think Woods has been working hard to get in position to take this Masters, but I'll take a long shop with Davis Love III.

i love Paul Azinger..another i almost forgot to mention that i'm rooting for..hmm how old is he? and the Shark if he is fifty, and never won a Masters, will never get the chance now..after fifty, remember, you must retire from the PGA and you can go on to the Senior tour..however if you haven't won a Master's before that time..you won't get another chance...if that makes sense..lol...what i'm trying to say, is no matter how old you are, at least it was this way...if you had won a Master's tournament, you can always participate in the game each year...no matter your age..but if during the regular PGA tour as a member, if you never won a Master's , once you turn fifty...and retire .....you can't enter another Master's..

god i hope that made sense lol.....i suck at explanations....

Gary Player competed in his 50th Masters this year (to tie Arnold Palmer's record), and actually shot 77 today, which must have been the closest any competitor shot to his age (Player is 71) and was only a little worse than the average score for the field. Fred Couples, closing with five pars, just made the cut on the number when Zach Johnson melted down and three-putted from four feet on the 16th and brought the cut line back from +7 to +8, which ties Couples with Player's run of making 23 Masters cuts running. Ernie Els bogeyed the last hole when he needed a birdie to keep his string of major cuts made alive (it ends at 27). Tom Watson, one of four or five players who failed to get out of the right greenside bunker on 18 in one attempt, made triple bogey on the hole to miss the cut by one.

Before the tournament, I was pulling for Henrik Stenson, not so much because he's had two huge wins this year as because he's inherited Nick Faldo's favourite caddy Fanny Sunesson. Stenson was even after the 13th, but finished at +4, still within six of the lead. The weather should stay cold and windy, similar to 2000 when Vijay Singh won, and Vijay is at even par, only two behind. At this point, though, I think I'd most like to see Padraig Harrington (+1 after a tournament-best-tying 68 today) win and redeem his dismal results from the last Ryder Cup.

i saw that giggledude...Gary Player was awesome...the tournament doesn't seem quite the same with the Golden Bear...ahh i suppose Jack was there though....anyhow..wow yesterday's finish was almost as exciting..i said almost, not quite but almost as exciting as a NASCAR race...everyone was screwing up....those greens were super fast..and Stuart Appleby double bogying..wow....Tiger just might win his fifth green jacket..they said the course conditions were super tough...and i'm sure today won't be any different..and damn Bernhard didn't make the cut...is it my imagination, or is he looking a bit older than i remember? ahh all the guys i liked and rooted for are now practically seniors...

close but no smoke

Man, cbs began their coverage with Goosen's second birdie and he was suddenly one off the pace. After his fourth birdie and a stellar front nine, he was in the lead and I thought it might just be his day. Of course, anyone can make a costly mistake on this course. The odd thing was, without making any big errors on the back nine, Goosen just didn't do enough to win. Oh well.

Actually (and I had to research this), Jeev Singh is from India and not related to VJ. They were paired together at one point, though, just to add to the confusion. Yes, I liked David Duval a lot. I don't remember the full story of why his game dropped off (there were several factors), but a case of vertigo, as aforementioned, was one reason. He married, has a family, and seems pretty happy, so I think golf and it's disappointments were minimalized.

I've attached a picture Seve, that hot-blooded Spaniard, for you. And there's one of Jeev Singh, albeit a might bit small.

wow thanks Mica...i believe i have a new guy to root for lol..that Jeve Singh well he is hot..hehe..i know shallow i am....and thanks for that picture of Seve....god at one time he was the handsomest thing i ever laid eyes on...and also thanks for the info on David Duvall....

well Tiger just barely lost...damn what a game...not since 1956 had no one been under par...kudos to the winner...Johnson...can't remember his first name ..

31 year old Zach Johnson from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Second win on tour and I enjoyed watching someone from "the pack" win it. I thought he handled himself really well considering his lack of experience on that kind of stage.

Well, it certainly seemed like the perfect set-up for Tiger Woods to break through and finally win a major without the 54-hole lead. Still, it may turn out to be a good thing for golf that four other players were able to get to +2 (or better for Zach Johnson) after Tiger got the lead alone at +3 (a mark he couldn't quite better). Nick Faldo's prediction was bang on.

I feel sorriest for Justin Rose, who had by far the worst start but managed to claw back from +7 after 4 to +2 after 16.
